DAY 2 – VENICE~TREVISO~PROSECCO AREA: After arrival at Venice Marco Polo Airport we will be met by our English-speaking assistant, who will be staying with the group until departure. On the way to the hotel, we will stop in Treviso and guided tour of the city center. Although still far from most of the touristic flows, this mid-sized city is a hidden gem of northeastern Italy. You will be fascinated by its picturesque canals and bridges, lively historical center, bars and restaurants, and the relaxed atmosphere of its pretty streets. Proceed to Prosecco area for check-in at our first-class hotel. Dinner and overnight. (D) DAY 3 – FOLLINA~SAN PIETRO DI FELETTO: Following breakfast at the hotel, we depart for the Treviso hills, famous for the production of Prosecco sparkling wine. We’ll visit Follina, a picturesque village immersed in the lush green landscape of Veneto's pre-Alps. Follina is anchored by a stunning twelfth-century Romanesque abbey and cloisters, the Abbazia di Follina, which is rarely overrun with visitors. In the afternoon proceed to San Pietro di Feletto and visit Perenzin dairy, founded by Domenico Perenzin at the beginning of the 20th Century and now an award-winning dairy producer. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon, with dinner and overnight at the hotel. (B, D) DAY 4 – RIVIERA DEL BRENTA: After breakfast, we are off for a full-day excursion along the Brenta Riviera, where Venetian aristocracy built their summer villas. An extraordinary historical, cultural and artistic setting where Dante, Palladio, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Goldoni, Goethe, Byron, Jappelli and many other illustrious artists have sang, played, wrote, and painted. The 200-plus Venetian villas, facing the River Brenta, surrounded by their majestic parks, are a gorgeous setting. Visit Villa Foscari, known as “La Malcontenta”, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then visit an ancient mill in Dolo, an important industrial area in 1550, with the largest mill in Europe at the time. In the afternoon we’ll visit Stra and Villa Pisani, also named “The Nazionale,” popular for its labyrinth and a famous visitor- none other than Napoleon himself! After the tour of the villa we’ll visit Villa Foscarini-Rossi, which hosts two permanent exhibitions: one by Rossimoda, the shoe manufacturing company for famous Italian, French and American stylists like Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Ungaro, Anne Klein, Vera Wang and others, and a modern art collection belonging to Luigino Rossi, owner of the Foscarini Villa. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 5 – VENICE: After breakfast, we will take a full-day excursion to Venice. Our tour of this canal city includes a walking tour of Piazza San Marco, priority entrance for a visit to St. Mark’s Basilica, a visit to the Doge's Palace and then crossing the Bridge of Sighs, which connects to the Piombi Prisons. The remainder of the afternoon is free for shopping, browsing, and if you choose, a ride on one of Venice’s famous gondolas. Return to our hotel to freshen up prior to dinner at a local trattoria. Overnight. (B, D) DAY 6 – VERONA~SIRMIONE: Breakfast at the hotel prior to our departure for Verona. While in Verona you will have time at leisure to visit Verona’s most interesting and beautiful places and monuments- a fascinating journey through various ages, architectural styles, stories and legends, from Roman remains until the early 900’s. In the afternoon proceed to Sirmione, called the “pearl of the lake,” by public boat. We will have free time here to explore the town. Its magic atmospheres were already described in Catullus' poems in first century before Christ. Catullus was born here, and probably lived in the beautiful villa on the extreme tip of Sirmione’s peninsula. It was the biggest Roman villa in Northern Italy and its impressive remains, today called Catullus Grotto, can be admired, along with the Castle built by the Scala family closing the entrance to Sirmione Peninsula. It is a very unusual castle built over water, with its walls enclosing a small protected harbor. Sirmione castle is exceptionally well preserved and can be visited. From its high walls and towers can be admired a beautiful panorama over Sirmione village and Lake Garda. Return to the hotel in the afternoon, with dinner and overnight at our hotel. (B, D) DAY 7 – VICENZA~BASSANO DEL GRAPPA: Morning departure after breakfast to Vicenza, one of the most important art centers in Italy. The city was founded by the Romans in 135 B.C. Thanks to the genius of Andrea Palladio, one of the most influential architects ever, the city is like an open-air architecture museum. Palladio’s Basilica in the central Piazza dei Signori, the Olimpic Theatre, Palazzo Chiericati, Palazzo del Capitanio, Villa Capra, are some of the works kept in Vicenza by Palladio. In the afternoon we visit Bassano del Grappa, a beautiful town with wonderful Palladian architecture, a special place in the local history, and unique foods and wines. The town is famous for the renowned Italian digestif, grappa, made from distilling the remains from the winemaking process after pressing. Visit a winery and oil plant and enjoy a wine and olive oil tasting. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 8 – PADUA~ARQUÀ PETRARCA~MONTEGALDA: Breakfast at the hotel and depart for Padua, where we’ll have a visit to the Basilica of St. Anthony. The walking tour begins with the Scrovegni Chapel, which houses one of Italy's most precious works of art- a recently restored piece done by the famed Giotto. Next we visit the University Bo Palace, home to Italy’s second oldest university that was founded in 1222, which attracted the likes of Dante, Petrarch, and Galileo Galilei. As you wander through the medieval center of Padua you'll see the Caffé Pedrocchi, historical literary café, Piazza della Frutta, Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. Proceed to Arquà Petrarca, a medieval town considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The town has retained its medieval form and is located on the slopes of Monte Calbarina and Monte Ventolene in a picturesque location. Arqua Petrarca is famous for producing good quality extra virgin olive oil, olives, chestnuts and honey. In the afternoon proceed to Montegalda, a small village located between Vicenza and Euganean Hills to visit the bells museum, housing historical items dating back to the 11th century to the present day. The visitors can see how a bell is casted in a live reconstruction of a real foundry. Dinner in a typical agriturismo in Prosecco area, and overnight at our hotel. (B, D) DAY 9 – VENICE~INTERMEDIATE STOP~BOSTON: After breakfast and hotel check-out, we will transfer to the airport for our return flight to Boston (via an intermediate stop), with meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available while in flight. Ancient Battles Guido Beltramini In 1575 Palladio published an illustrated Italian edition of Julius Caesar’s Commentaries. Five years later, his death halted the publication of Polybius’ Histories, which included forty-three engravings showing armies deployed at various battles: from Cannae to Zamas, Mantinea and Cynoscephalae. At the height of his career, Palladio invested time, energy and money into two publishing ventures far removed from architecture. In fact the two publications were part of a world of military matters which had attracted Palladio’s interest since his youth, when it formed an integral part of his education undertaken by Giangiorgio Trissino. As John Hale has shown, sixteenth-century Venice was one of the most active centres in Europe for military publications dealing with matters such as fortifications, tactics, artillery, fencing and even medicine. The distinguishing element in the Venetian production of such books was the widespread belief in the importance of the example of the Classical Greek and Roman writers, shared by men of letters and professional soldiers. This was combined with particular care shown towards the reader. The books were supplemented with tables of contents, indices, marginal notes and even accompanied by the publication of compendia illustrating the texts, such as the series entitled Gioie (‘Gems’) which Gabriele Giolito published from 1557 to 1570 (Hale 1980, pp. 257-268).
