My dissertation uses a variety of critical methods (socio-political, historical, philological, narratological and feminist), along with the stylistic analysis and close reading of individual works, to study and assess the importance of Fillia’s literature, theater, art, political activism, and beyond. Far from being derivative and reactionary in form and content, as interwar futurism has often been characterized, Fillia’s works deploy subtler, but no less innovative forms of experimentation. For most of his brief but highly productive life, Fillia lived and worked in Turin, where in the early 1920s he came into contact with Antonio Gramsci and his factory councils.

Palazzo Venier dei Leoni 701 Dorsoduro 30123 Venezia, Italy Telephone 041 2405 411 Telefax 041 5206885 Press release THEMES AND VARIATIONS POST-WAR ART FROM THE GUGGENHEIM COLLECTIONS February 2 – August 4, 2002 On Friday 1st February 2002, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, will inaugurate Themes and Variations – Post-war Art from the Guggenheim Collections. Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, this 6-month cycle of installations will assemble paintings, sculptures and works on paper - both European and American, but predominantly Italian – from the holdings of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, with a small number of additional private loans. This dynamic and innovative project sets out to provide a fuller understanding and contextualization of the post-war works in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. A series of three two-month installations – examining in turn a succession of movements and artists with which Peggy Guggenheim was affiliated first in New York and later Venice - will present works by a strong group of post-war 20th century artists, including Edmondo Bacci, Francis Bacon, César, Joseph Cornell, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, Asger Jorn, Bice Lazzari, René Magritte, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Mimmo Rotella, Giuseppe Santomaso, Tancredi, Laurence Vail, Victor Vasarely and Emilio Vedova. Themes and Variations provides an opportunity to present for the first time recent acquisitions of post-war art, including important works by Carla Accardi, Agostino Bonalumi, Costantino Nivola, Mimmo Rotella and Toti Scialoja, alongside previously acquired works by Edmondo Bacci, Lucio Fontana, Conrad Marca-Relli, Giuseppe Santomaso and Armando Pizzinato. A series of private loans will further strengthen the representation of Italian post-war art; it is in this context that the work of Mirko Basaldella will be presented in depth in the course of the initial February- March installation.

  • The Centenary of Independence Two Young Peasant Women
The Centenary of Independence by Henri Rousseau Painted in 1892, this depicts the celebration of the French independence of 1792. There are peasants dancing the farandole under a liberty tree. Serious and dignified republican leaders look on at the happy people of France. The bright colors and solid figures are allegorical of the radiant and strong state of France under its good government. Two Young Peasant Women by Camille Pissaro This was painted in 1891. The artist had a desire to “educate the people” by depicting scenes of people working on farms and in rural settings. He made an effort to be realist rather than idealistic. He wanted to depict people as they really were not in order to make allegorical statements or send political messages. Exotic Landscape by Henri Rousseau This was painted in 1908 and is part of a series of jungle scenes by this artist. He purposely painted in a naive or primitive style. Though the painting looks simplistic the lay- ers of paint are built up layer by meticulous layer to give the depth of color and vibrancy that the artist desired. He didn’t even begin painting until he was in his forties, but by the age of 49 he was able to quit his regular job and paint full time. He was self taught. When Will You Marry? by Paul Gauguin The artist moved to Tahiti from his native France, looking for a simpler life. He was disappointed to find Tahiti colonized and most of the traditional lifestyle gone. His most famous paintings are all of Tahitian scenes.

  • Studio International Magazine: Tales from Peter Townsend’S Editorial Papers 1965-1975
Studio International magazine: Tales from Peter Townsend’s editorial papers 1965-1975 Joanna Melvin 49015858 2013 Declaration of authorship I, Joanna Melvin certify that the worK presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this is indicated in the thesis. i Tales from Studio International Magazine: Peter Townsend’s editorial papers, 1965-1975 When Peter Townsend was appointed editor of Studio International in November 1965 it was the longest running British art magazine, founded 1893 as The Studio by Charles Holme with editor Gleeson White. Townsend’s predecessor, GS Whittet adopted the additional International in 1964, devised to stimulate advertising. The change facilitated Townsend’s reinvention of the radical policies of its founder as a magazine for artists with an international outlooK. His decision to appoint an International Advisory Committee as well as a London based Advisory Board show this commitment. Townsend’s editorial in January 1966 declares the magazine’s aim, ‘not to ape’ its ancestor, but ‘rediscover its liveliness.’ He emphasised magazine’s geographical position, poised between Europe and the US, susceptible to the influences of both and wholly committed to neither, it would be alert to what the artists themselves wanted. Townsend’s policy pioneered the magazine’s presentation of new experimental practices and art-for-the-page as well as the magazine as an alternative exhibition site and specially designed artist’s covers. The thesis gives centre stage to a British perspective on international and transatlantic dialogues from 1965-1975, presenting case studies to show the importance of the magazine’s influence achieved through Townsend’s policy of devolving responsibility to artists and Key assistant editors, Charles Harrison, John McEwen, and contributing editor Barbara Reise.

345 GIORGIO DE CHIRICO AND RAFFAELLO GIOLLI: PAINTER AND CRITIC IN MILAN BETWEEN THE WARS AN UNPUBLISHED STORY Lorella Giudici Giorgio de Chirico and Rafaello Giolli: “one is a painter, the other a historian”,1 Giolli had pointed out to accentuate the diference, stung to the quick by statements (“just you try”2) and by the paintings that de Chirico had shown in Milan in early 1921, “pictures […] which”, the critic declared without mincing words, “are not to our taste”.3 Te artist had brought together 26 oils and 40 drawings, including juvenilia (1908- 1915) and his latest productions, for his frst solo show set up in the three small rooms of Galleria Arte,4 the basement of an electrical goods shop that Vincenzo Bucci5 more coherently and poetically rechristened the “hypogean gallery”6 and de Chirico, in a visionary manner, defned as “little underground Eden”.7 Over and above some examples of metaphysical painting, de Chirico had shown numerous copies of renaissance and classical works, mostly done at the Ufzi during his stays in Florence: a copy from Dosso Dossi and a head of Meleager (both since lost); Michelangelo’s Holy Family (“I spent six months on it, making sure to the extent of my abilities to render the aspect of Michelangelo’s work in its colour, its clear and dry impasto, in the complicated spirit of its lines and forms”8); a female fgure, in Giolli’s words “unscrupulously cut out of a Bronzino picture”,9 and a drawing with the head of Niobe, as well as his Beloved Young Lady, 1 R.

You may download and print this text by Roberta Serpolli, solely for personal use THE PANZA COLLECTION STORY “The Panza Collection is entirely a couple’s affair. When my wife Giovanna and I discover works by a new artist, I look at her and she looks at me. I can see in her eyes if she wants to buy or not. So even between my wife and me, ‘looking’ is an issue.” Giuseppe Panza, 20091 Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, along with his wife Giovanna, is recognized as one of the world’s foremost collectors of contemporary art. The collection, originally composed of around 2,500 works of art, is mainly representative of the most significant developments in American art from post- World War II to the 21st century. Along with a need to fulfill spiritual and inner quests, both intuition and reflection have inspired the collectors’ choice that would demonstrate, retrospectively, their far- sightedness. By devoting themselves to an in-depth focus on emerging artists and specific creative periods, the Panzas contributed to acknowledging the new art forms among both the general public and the art market. The Beginnings of the Collection: On the Road to America The collection ideally began in 1954 when Giuseppe, at the age of thirty years, traveled to South America and the United States, from New York to Los Angeles, where he discovered the continents’ captivating vitality of economy and culture. Upon his return to Milan, he felt the need to take part in the international cultural milieu. In 1955, shortly after his marriage with Giovanna Magnifico, Giuseppe purchased his first work of art by Italian abstract painter Atanasio Soldati.
