HR. 1 The Apple Years The Beatles - Hey Jude – Single/ Hey Jude / Past Masters Recorded: 29/30/31 July TRIDENT, 1 August 1968 2 The Beatles most successful single in their entire career. It was #1 for NINE weeks straight in the USA…(3 weeks in the UK) Lennon: I always heard it as a song to me. When Paul say’s “go out and get her”…he meant go ahead leave me…. This was the FIRST record released on Apple Records. Musicians: Paul McCartney - double-tracked lead vocal, piano, bass guitar; John Lennon - backing vocal, acoustic guitar; George Harrison - backing vocal, lead guitar; Ringo Starr - drums, tambourine; Unknown players - forty-piece orchestra Mary Hopkin - Those Were The Days – Aug. `68 Mary sang the a-side in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and I believe German. The US issue was, of course, the English issue. A big hit to start Mary's career. Produced By Paul McCartney. This is a mono record. Jackie Lomax – Sour Milk Sea – Single Aug.26th `68 Of Apple's first four, which were released together, This is A mono record. The a-side was written by George Harrison. Copies can be found Which credit the authorship to McCartney-Lennon. Apropos Enough since Paul wrote the song and produced the record. Copies pressed in Los Angeles for a time showed "Yellow Submarine" as the A-side (unsliced side) of the record. This is a mono record. The only Beatles song inspired by a woman in New Jersey who dressed in polythene (but not jack boots or kilts). Written in India, demoed for the White LP. Musicians: John Lennon – lead vocal, lead guitar, acoustic guitar; Paul McCartney – harmony vocal, piano, lead guitar, bass guitar, lead guitar; George Harrison – backing vocal, rhythm guitar; Ringo Starr – drums, tambourine, maracas This was recorded at the same session as She Came In Through The Bathroom Window (they weren’t edited together – they were actually recorded all the way through as a single piece). It was based on a girl called Pat Dawson (…some sources say Pat Hodgett) who came to see them playing at The Cavern. Apparently she used to eat a lot of plastic and had the nickname Polythene Pat. I used to tie it in knots and eat it. Sometimes I even burnt it and ate it when it got cold, she said. Then I had a friend who got a job in a polythene-bag factory, which was wonderful because it meant I had a constant supply. The bit about dressing up referred to a girl that John met in 1963, called Stephanie. She was going out with the English beat-poet Royston Ellis, and they went back to his flat and dressed up in a polythene suit. But they never had sex – they just went straight to sleep… apparently. John said: She didn’t wear jackboots and kilts either, I just sort of elaborated. Perverted sex in a polythene bag. Just looking for something to write about. The Yeah-Yeah-Yeah line at the end of the verses are straight lifts from She Loves You (the second time they quoted from the song in recent records – the other one being All You Need Is Love). 8 Lead Vocal John Lennon 1.00 John Lennon – Cold Turkey – Single Oct. `69 This single is rare with the Capitol logo label. The Beatles – Let It Be LP– May `70 DIG A PONY Doris Troy – Ain’t That Cute - LP – Nov. `70 First, there are many names on this album including George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, Delany and Bonnie, Peter 10 Frampton, Billy Preston, Klaus Voorman and more. George, Billy, Stephen and Jackie Lomax wrote some of the tunes with Doris. Now that that's out of the way, I must say...this is a great album. This is an action in which it is claimed that a successful song, My Sweet Lord, listing George Harrison as the composer, is plagiarized from an earlier successful song, He’s So Fine, composed by Ronald Mack, recorded by a singing group called the “Chiffons,” the copyright of which is owned by plaintiff, Bright Tunes Music Corp. He’s So Fine, recorded in 1962, is a catchy tune consisting essentially of four repetitions of a very short basic musical phrase, “sol-mi-re,” (hereinafter motif A),1 altered as necessary to fit the words, followed by four repetitions of another short basic musical phrase, “sol-la-do-la-do,” (hereinafter motif B).2 While neither motif is novel, the four repetitions of A, followed by four repetitions of B, is a highly unique pattern.3 In addition, in the second use of the motif B series, there is a grace note inserted making the phrase go “sol-la-do-la-re-do.”4 My Sweet Lord, recorded first in 1970, also uses the same motif A (modified to suit the words) four times, followed by motif B, repeated three times, not four. In place of He’s So Fine’s fourth repetition of motif B, My Sweet Lord has a transitional passage of musical attractiveness of the same approximate length, with the identical grace note in the identical second repetition.5 The harmonies of both songs are identical.6 *179 George Harrison, a former member of The Beatles, was aware of He’s So Fine.

    Billy Preston Billy Preston was a soul singer and pianist who, in addition to having a successful solo career, collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Often called “the Fifth Beatle,” this former child prodigy left one of the most profound and prolific legacies in music. William Everett Preston was born in Houston, Texas in 1946. He began playing piano at age three, and by ten he had joined the band of gospel great Mahalia Jackson. At age twelve he appeared in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, portraying blues composer W.C. Handy as a young man. In the 1960s Preston performed with Little Richard and Ray Charles, and became a regular singer and pianist on the ABC television series Shindig. Preston went on to a successful career as a session musician, including lending his talents to the Beatle’s Let It Be album. That collaboration led to his signing to the Beatles’ Apple label, and in 1969 his solo effort, produced by George Harrison, was released. The album That's the Way God Planned It and the single of the same name met with limited success, but in 1972 he released an instrumental funk single, "Outa-Space," that reached #2 in the U.S. and won the Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.     The Apple Label With the Capitol Logo When Apple label introduced itself to the world in 1968, the brand featured a label design from the Gene Mahon agency. Reportedly, Neil Aspinall of Apple contacted Gene Mahon personally and told him that they would like for Mahon to shoot photographs of apples. His idea was to have a full apple on one side with no writing whatsoever, and a sliced apple on the other side containing all of the information about the record. With the way that the laws were written, EMI were reluctant to cram all of the information onto one label (which might also pose logistical problems on an album label). Mahon selected Paul Castell to take the photographs. Some apple photos later, and the famous Apple record label was born. The rim area around the label was left blank, to allow each EMI affiliate the ability to print whatever manufacturing information they desired (or what might be required by law). The art department at Capitol Records decided to keep the print to a minimum. At the bottom of the sliced side, they placed the words “Mfd. by Apple Records, Inc.” That was all that needed to be said. A few months later, Capitol decided to mark the labels differently for artists who had contracts with Capitol. At the time, this basically meant the Beatles themselves, whose singles were numbered as part of the Capitol series (in the 2000s). Records that were from artists whose discs were in the Apple series (the 1800s) and who had contracts through Apple alone would continue to be marked with “Mfd.

    Apple by the Numbers U.S. album releases From the collection of Andre Gardner of NY, NY SWBO‐101 The Beatles The Beatles Released: 22 Nov. 1968 (nicknamed "The White Album") In stark contrast to the cover to Sgt. Pepper's LHCB, the cover to this two record set was plain white, with writing only on the spine and in the upper right hand corner of the back cover (indicating that the album was in stereo). This was the first Beatles US album release which was not available in mono. The mono mix, available in the UK, Australia, and several other countries, sounds quite different from the stereo mix. The album title was embossed on the front cover. Inserts included a poster and four glossy pictures (one of each Beatle). The pictures were smaller in size than those issued with the UK album. A tissue paper separator was placed between the pictures and the record. Finally, as in every EMI country, the albums were numbered.     Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”.
