Cottage Health System PO Box 689 • Santa Barbara, CA 93102 • (805) 682-7111 www.cottagehealthsystem.org The ‘River of Life’ flows through an interior courtyard at the new JUNE 2012 Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Dear fellow community members, In this annual report issue of “Cottage” magazine, we look back at the highlights of the past year, share some inspirational stories of patients who have needed our help, learn from some long-term board members what it meant to them to serve their community health system, and say thank you to our many donors whose generous support is so invaluable to the work we do.

The new year has already been full of excitement as we moved patients and staff into the newly constructed Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital pavilions on February 12. Positive comments on the new facility from our patients, visitors, staff and volunteers have touched on the elements of the award-winning design, the abundance of natural light, the inspiring landscape, and the impressive collection of healing art both inside and outside the buildings. More remains to be done, and we continue to appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this extensive project.

At the same time, impressive progress is already under way for the new Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, and finishing touches are being put into place at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage, which in early 2013 will be the first of our hospitals to be completed and up to the State’s new earthquake safety standards.

Meanwhile, standing behind all we do and providing thoughtful guidance in meeting our mission are the elected leaders of our hospitals [pictured on right]. To them, we offer our most sincere gratitude. Their selfless contributions, often invisible to patients and visitors, truly make a difference.

COTTAGE MAGAZINE 2010/2011 ANNUAL REPORT ISSUE 5 WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes is a disease in which high levels of sugar are in the blood. It is caused by a problem in the way the body makes or uses insulin, which is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells and convert it to energy.

Having already completed their freshman year of general edu- cation courses, or having previously earned a qualifying Bachelor’s degree, these nursing students will gain hands-on experience with patient simulators and clinical experience through rotations at Cottage. A three classroom CI-Cottage facility located adjacent to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital will host the full-time, 2.5 year (or 7 semesters) program. The facility also boasts a fully equipped, high-tech simulation laboratory. This first cohort of students will graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the end of the 2014 spring semester. In July 2010, Cottage and CI entered into a 10-year agreement to establish the first BSN program in Santa Barbara County. In addition to the nationally impending nursing shortage, the need for a local BSN program arose when SBCH first embarked on the journey to Magnet Hospital Designation, which requires a higher than average number of BSN nurses at the bedside. The CI Nursing Program at Cottage will be instrumental in generating a continued workforce for the future. By 2020, the fully-accredited program will have 140 BSN graduates, and an additional 40 students will be scheduled for graduation in 2021 and 2022.

A place to Call Home What was once the site of the former St. Francis Medical Center is now a new residen- tial community known as Bella Riviera. The development located at 601 Micheltorena Street is comprised of 115 townhomes, of which 81 “professional units” are being sold exclusively to qualified Cottage Health System employees, with 34 “traditional units” available for sale to the public. As of mid-May 2012, 50 of the professional homes had been sold to Cottage staff and 25 homes were already claimed by the public. The first residents received keys to their new homes in mid June. Homes are being completed in phases and Bella Riviera is expected to be fully occupied by the end of 2012, offering spectacular views to its new owners and helping to address the continuing challenge of housing costs for our employees.

In the days before patients moved in, the hospital opened its doors during special events to celebrate and to thank the many community members, employees and volun- teers who contributed to making the hospital a reality. The breadth of talent and dedication it took to complete the project is without measure. In the months and years before patients moved in, so much work was done to prepare for the day, and so many people had a part in building this hospital for the future.

ON FEBRUARY 12, 2012, the mood was positively electric. Employees gathered in the auditorium before dawn. Move day had arrived. And the much anticipated move from the original hospital into the new pavilions of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital went without a hitch. Two years of planning, 13,000 hours of training, numerous meet- ings and extensive work from departments across the spectrum made the transition a truly momen- tous occasion that was, as Chief Operating Officer Steven Fellows put it, “clockwork perfect.” Many medical staff members and volunteers gave of their time to support the effort and ensure that more than 100 patients were moved safely and expeditiously, with the first patient moves begin- ning at 7:00 am and concluding just before noon. During the course of the day, pa- tients settled in to the new hospital while the original hospital contin- ued operations. Jake Neel arrived the night be- fore the move and thus was the last baby born in the original building and—the next day—was one of the first patients to be transported into the new hospital, wheeled in under the watchful eyes of dad, Jay, and a team of nurses. Just 48 minutes into the move, Augustin Arroyo Jr. arrived, mak- ing history as the first baby born in the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Albert and Sally Young of Santa Barbara were the lucky grand prize winners of our raffle held during the Grand Opening Events for the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The Youngs have many connections to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital—Albert was born there 80 years ago, and Sally has been a patient on several occasions. In January, the couple’s grand prize included a private tour of the new hospital, allowing them to see areas not always accessible to the public. They visited the Maternity area and also the helipad where they were treated to a spectacular panoramic view of Santa Barbara and the coastline. After their tour, Albert and Sally enjoyed a private lunch at the new outdoor dining area, complete with table service from members of the Nutrition Department.
