It did make a short trip to Sadler’s Wells in November with two p r o g r a m m e s a n d f i v e performances over four days. The first one, Made in Germany, featured excerpts from works choreographed in Germany for t h e c o m p a n y . • A (Very Personal) History of Barnet and District AC
A (very personal) history of Barnet and District AC In early 2017 the club magazine Editor wrote to me, saying: “I'd like there to be some things in the next issue relating to the club's 50 anniversary/history etc. Would you be able/willing to contribute something?” Without hesitation I said yes, and here it is. I have chosen to write three parallel intertwined stories. They are the main points in the development of the club in the early years, illustrated with some results and reports from those days from the relevant club magazines, and interspersed with some observations on my own short running career once I arrived on the scene (thankfully for you that was not until 1982!). There are thousands of results and reports, and I have tried to select items of interest and/or relevance. I have tried to not dwell on, or comment too often on, the ‘but things were different/better in them days’ aspect of athletics. I leave you to interpret the content as you wish. Considerable license has been taken in editing down mag reports to their core detail. STEVE CHILTON (with thanks to Brian Fowler and all the club magazine editors) 1 Early days Barnet and District AC was formed in 1967, after a merger of Hampstead Harriers with Barnet AC. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find copies of the club mags from the years before 1974, so the first 6 years are something of a mystery (I copied all Brian Strong’s club mags from 1973 onwards a while ago, at the time I was editor, as he was editor for many of the early years).

  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.

Austerity Fashion 1945-1951 rebuilding fashion cultures in post-war London Bethan Bide Royal Holloway, University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Figure 1: Second-hand shoes for sale at a market in the East End, by Bob Collins, 1948. Museum of London, IN37802. 2 Declaration of authorship I Bethan Bide hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Bethan Bide 8 September 2017 3 Abstract This thesis considers the relationship between fashion, austerity and London in the years 1945 to 1951—categorised by popular history as a period of austerity in Britain. London in the late 1940s is commonly remembered as a drab city in a state of disrepair, leading fashion historians to look instead to Paris and New York for signs of post-war energy and change. Yet, looking closer at the business of making and selling fashion in London, it becomes clear that, behind the shortages, rubble and government regulation, something was stirring. The main empirical section of the thesis is divided into four chapters that explore different facets of London’s fashionable networks. These consider how looking closely at the writing, making, selling and watching of austerity fashion can help us build a better understanding of London fashion in the late 1940s. Together, these chapters reveal that austerity was a driving force for dynamic processes of change— particularly in relation to how women’s ready-to-wear fashions were made and sold in the city—and that a variety of social, economic and political conditions in post- war Britain changed the way manufacturers, retailers and consumers understood the symbolic capital of London fashion.

MG: From a very, very early age I can remember events that I couldn’t place the date of but clearly when I was four, five or six I can remember Richard Tauber, the great tenor, coming to tea with Uncle Bernie and Auntie Carol, as I called them and falling through the deck chair in the garden of the house.
