Harold Bloom: Well, this brings one to the question of a national context: in fact people in American universities and colleges and in the secondary schools and in academies throughout the English-speaking world, are very much worried about canonical matters because a tremendous debate has been going on now for about the last twenty years or so, which in one very bad sense is settled: that the people who would argüe for humanistic education, in English at least (the study of the traditional Western Canon, from Homer through Shakespeare, Cervantes and Tolstoy, down to Marcel Proust, say, or Samuel Beckett), we have been defeated. A traditional Western Canon is largely not studied anymore in American colleges, universities, preparatory schools, secondary schools, and this is trae also in Australia, New Zealand, Canadá, Great Britain, and so forth. But the personal reason is really quite different, and had nothing to do with polemic. I am a literary critic in my middle sixties; Tve been writing about literature, publishing on literature since 1957.1've been a student of literature really from the time I was a very small boy; in any language I could teach myself to read. And I've written a number of books, and I just thought it was time that I write a kind of general study of literature, trying to see if I could isolate those qualities that in the end unify Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dante, Chaucer, Tolstoy, and so on, and trying to extend Walter Pater's notion of the aesthetic or Osear Wilde's notion of the aesthetic to a kind of general defense of the aesthetic study of literature. -

Part One: 'Science Fiction versus Mundane Culture', 'The overlap between Science Fiction and other genres' and 'Horror Motifs' Transcript Date: Thursday, 8 May 2008 - 11:00AM Location: Royal College of Surgeons SCIENCE FICTION VERSUS MUNDANE CULTURE Neal Stephenson When the Gresham Professors Michael Mainelli and Tim Connell did me the honour of inviting me to this Symposium, I cautioned them that I would have to attend as a sort of Idiot Savant: an idiot because I am not a scholar or even a particularly accomplished reader of SF, and a Savant because I get paid to write it. So if this were a lecture, the purpose of which is to impart erudition, I would have to decline. Instead though, it is a seminar, which feels more like a conversation, and all I suppose I need to do is to get people talking, which is almost easier for an idiot than for a Savant. I am going to come back to this Idiot Savant theme in part three of this four-part, forty minute talk, when I speak about the distinction between vegging out and geeking out, two quintessentially modern ways of spending ones time. 1. The Standard Model If you don't run with this crowd, you might assume that when I say 'SF', I am using an abbreviation of 'Science Fiction', but here, it means Speculative Fiction. The coinage is a way to cope with the problem that Science Fiction is mysteriously and inextricably joined with the seemingly unrelated literature of Fantasy. Many who are fond of one are fond of the other, to the point where they perceive them as the same thing, in spite of the fact that they seem quite different to non-fans. -

The Ghosts of Comala: Haunted Meaning in Pedro Páramo An introduction to Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Paramo by Danny J. Anderson “How do we reckon with what modern history has rendered ghostly?" —Avery F. Gordon, Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological lmagination "I don't know. I see things and people where you may not see anything." —The character Juan Preciado in Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo During my college years, Pedro Páramo was the first Spanish-language novel that fully captured my attention. It haunted my thinking, a reaction comparable in intensity to my discovery of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights as an adolescent reader. Only partially grasping the nuances of words and styles in a language I was still learning, I became obsessed with understanding Pedro Páramo. It fascinated me to the extent that I decided to become a scholar of Latin American literature. Decades later, after analyzing it for graduate seminars, discussing it in conference papers, and teaching it to generations of students, the novel still holds that same hallucinatory power for me. The powerful effect of Pedro Páramo has its source in the use of enigmas that involve readers in the process of understanding the complex relationship between past and present in early twentieth-century Mexico. The novel transports readers to a ghost town on the desert plains in Mexico, and there it weaves together tales of passion, loss, and revenge. The village of Comala is populated by the wandering souls of former inhabitants, individuals not yet pure enough to enter heaven. Like the character Juan Preciado, who travels to Comala and suddenly finds himself confused, as readers we are not sure about what we see, hear, or understand. -

Dr. Carmen Tafolla Summary Bio: Author of more than twenty books and inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters for outstanding literary achievement, Dr. Carmen Tafolla holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Austin and has worked in the fields of Mexican American Studies, bilingual bicultural education, and creativity education for more than thirty- five years. The former Director of the Mexican-American Studies Center at Texas Lutheran (1973-75 and 78-79), she proceeded to pioneer the administration of cultural education projects at Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, KLRN-TV, Northern Arizona University, Scott-Foresman Publishing Company, and to be active in Latino Cultural education and community outreach for the last 35 years. An internationally noted educator, scholar and poet, Dr. Tafolla has been asked to present at colleges and universities throughout the nation, and in England, Spain, Germany, Norway, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. One of the most highly anthologized of Latina writers, her work has appeared in more than 200 anthologies, magazines, journals, readers, High School American Literature textbooks, kindergarten Big Books, posters, and in the Poetry-in-Motion series installed on city buses. Her children‟s works often celebrate culture and personal empowerment. Among her awards are the Americas Award, the Charlotte Zolotow Award for best children‟s picture book writing, two Tomas Rivera Book Awards, two International Latino Book Awards, an ALA Notable Book, a Junior Library Guild Selection, the Tejas Star Listing, and the Texas 2 by 2 Award. She is the co-author of the first book ever published on Latina Civil Rights leader Emma Tenayuca, That’s Not Fair! Emma Tenayuca’s Struggle for Justice, which Críticas Magazine listed among the Best Children‟s Books of 2008. -

The paper points to Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Mario Vargas Llosa as the three authors who might form this traditional and liberal canon with their works "La Muerte de Artemio Cruz" (Fuentes), "Cien Anos de Soledad" (Garcia Marquez), and "La Cuiudad y los Perros" (Vargas Llosa). It discusses how the idea of a literary canon came about originally and how the canon of Latin American literature seems to be based mostly on the votes of publishing houses, reviews, anthologies, and preferences of academics. The paper states that, in a 1995 study Joan Brown and Crista Johnson found: "The present study indicates that there is currently no canon of 20th century prose fiction for Spanish or Spanish American literature, if "canonical" is defined as a work's presence on every reading list. -

Decolonizing Post-Colonial Studies and Paradigms of Political Economy: Transmodernity, Decolonial Thinking, and Global Coloniality RAMÓN GROSFOGUEL UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Can we produce a radical anti-systemic politics beyond identity politics? Is it possible to articulate a critical cosmopolitanism beyond nationalism and colonialism? Can we produce knowledges beyond Third World and Eurocentric fundamentalisms? Can we overcome the traditional dichotomy between political-economy and cultural studies? Can we move beyond economic reductionism and culturalism? How can we overcome the Eurocentric modernity without throwing away the best of modernity as many Third World fundamentalists do? In this paper, I propose that an epistemic perspective from the subaltern side of the colonial difference has a lot to contribute to this debate. It can contribute to a critical perspective beyond the outlined dichotomies and to a redefinition of capitalism as a world-system. In October 1998, there was a conference/dialogue at Duke University between the South Asian Subaltern Studies Group and the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group. The dialogue initiated at this conference eventually resulted in the publication of several issues of the journal NEPANTLA. However, this conference was the last time the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group met before their split. Among the many reasons and debates that produced this split, there are two that I would like to stress. The members of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group were primarily Latinamericanist scholars in the USA. Despite their attempt at producing a radical and alternative knowledge, they reproduced the epistemic schema of Area Studies in the United States. With a few exceptions, they produced studies about the subaltern rather than studies with and from a subaltern perspective. -

ABSTRACT Popular fiction is a very significant area of literature and literary studies. At the same time it is very complicated to be defined as it is the part of ever-pervading popular culture. The field of popular fiction is a very notable part of popular culture. As popular culture is widespread and ever-pervading, popular fiction is also very vast and wide. As there is no clear boundary between the culture and popular culture, it is also very difficult to define popular fiction due to its all-pervading nature. Popular fiction is always seen and defined in contrast with literary fiction. However, many books of literary fiction share the elements of popular fiction. Similarly, many books of popular fiction include the elements of literary fiction. Hence, there is not a clear boundary between literary fiction and popular fiction. Due to this, it becomes very difficult to define the field of popular fiction and distinguish it from literary fiction. However, this difficult task of defining popular fiction can be made something easy with the help of the theory of popular fiction as proposed by some critics who have tried to define popular fiction as a special kind of cultural practice. 133 CAMILO JOSÉ CELA, CABALLERO BONALD Y LOS INICIOS DE PAPELES DE SON ARMADANS (1956-1958) CAMILO JOSÉ CELA, CABALLERO BONALD AND THE BEGINNINGS OF PAPELES DE SON ARMADANS (1956-1958) Julio Neira UNED (1956-1958) Resumen: En 1956, en pleno auge de la dictadura franquista, Camilo José Cela funda Papeles de Son Armadans en Palma de Mallorca con la pretensión de lograr una alta calidad literaria según el modelo de Revista de Occidente, la gran revista de preguerra (1923-1936) creada por José Ortega y Gasset. Para ello cuenta con la ayuda del poeta José Manuel Caballero Bonald, que actúa como subdirector y agente de la publicación en Madrid. Los contactos de ambos posibilitan una de Son Armadans Papeles amplia nómina de colaboradores de primer nivel, que, junto a la incorporación de autores exiliados y la presencia de todas las literaturas peninsulares, hacen de la revista la principal referencia intelectual de las décadas del 50 y del 60 en España. En el ámbito de la poesía, debe destacarse su atención a las nuevas promociones (Barral, Gil de Biedma, Goytisolo, etc.) y la voluntad de recuperar a los autores del Veintisiete en su conjunto, incluyendo a los más olvidados Cernuda, Prados y Altolaguirre. Se estudian los tres primeros años de la revista, hasta que motivos personales produjeron la ruptura de esa colaboración entre el novelista gallego y el poeta andaluz.
