View all copies of this ISBN edition Sejong the Great (Korean pronunciation: [se(Ë)dÊ‘oÅ‹]; 7 May 1397 â“ 8 April 1450) was the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty of Korea. He was the third son of King Taejong and Queen consort Min. He was designated as heir-apparent, Crown Prince, after his older brother Prince Yangnyeong was stripped of his title. He ascended to the throne in 1418. During the first four years of his reign, Taejong governed as regent, after which his father-in-law, Sim On, and his close associates were executed. King Sejong is one of only two Korean rulers honored with the appellation the "Great," the other being Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo, the king who expanded Korean territory to China and Manchuria. King Sejong was honored with the appellation âœGreatâ for his accomplishments and contributions. Early Life. King Sejongâ™s greatest legacy to Korea was his introduction of the Hanâ™gul script. The Chiphyonjon, a royal institute that conducted research on behalf of the king, introduced this new script. The institute compiled a long series of official histories of Korea and treatises on Confucian ideas and also organized many history talks increasing the knowledge of the royal family and the nobility in the history of Korea.
