Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.

    Medal of Honor Recipient Florent Groberg to Serve as Grand Marshal of 2018 New York City Veterans Day Parade NEW YORK, June 14, 2018 – On the occasion of the 243rd birthday of the United States Army, the United War Veterans Council (UWVC), producers of the annual New York City Veterans Day Parade, announced that the Grand Marshal of the 2018 parade is retired U.S. Army Captain Florent Groberg. Born in France, Groberg became an American citizen in 2001 and joined the U.S. Army in 2008. He received the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor, for heroic acts during his service in Afghanistan in 2012. Groberg identified a suicide bomber targeting his formation and physically tackled the individual, causing both the initial attacker and a second bomber to prematurely detonate their devices. Groberg’s quick thinking and courage saved many lives, including those of senior U.S. and Afghan commanders. He himself was severely wounded in the action. Medically retired in 2015, Groberg is an active advocate for veterans and their needs. Groberg will lead the 2018 NYC Veterans Day Parade – the nation’s largest and most prominent Veterans Day event – on Sunday, November 11, along Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan. The featured service branch for this year’s parade is the U.S. Army, in which Groberg served. This year’s Parade also holds special significance, as it honors the centennial of World War One, which ended with the signing of an armistice on November 11, 1918. Over 4.7 million Americans served in WWI; nearly 117,000 lost their lives, most while serving in France.

But there is clearly more to it in these cases. To gain acceptance into America, these stars chose names that sounded less Jewish. I am not here to cast aspersions on them. I didn’t live through that era in which job opportunities for Jews were curtailed. And for all I know, these stars may be proud Jews who care about our people. My point is that there have been times when we’ve chosen to blend in. And then there were times when we were basically forced to blend in. Such was the case in ancient Israel under Greek rule. It is the story we recall as Chanukah approaches this Sunday night. While the Selucid and Egyptian Ptolemy empires respected Jewish culture and protected Jewish institutions, these policies were reversed under Antiochus IV. His decree set forth in 167 BCE prohibited Jews from circumcising their sons, studying Torah, observing shabbat and holidays and sacrificing to God at the Temple. We read in II Maccabees 6, “Not long after this, the king sent an Athenian senator to force the Jews to abandon the laws of their ancestors and live no longer by the laws of God, also to profane the temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus… No one could keep the sabbath or celebrate the traditional feasts, nor even admit to being a Jew.” According to some scholars, that last phrase, “no one could even admit to being a Jew,” implied that Jews were forced to change their names.
