James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Dennis Hopper, Directed by Nicholas Ray. Tale of teenage rebellion in the 50s showcased many young actors, made Dean a major star. Thursday, Sept. 9-The Whole Town’s Talking (1935)- comedy, 95 min. Edward G. Robinson, Jean Arthur, Wallace Ford, Directed by John Ford. A mild-mannered, law-abiding man bears a striking resemblance to a killer on the loose. Chaos ensues. Thursday, Sept. 16-Flight of the Phoenix (1965)- adventure/drama, 149 min. James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Directed by Robert Aldrich. A cargo plane crashes in the Sahara desert where the survivors hatch a plan to survive. Superior acting from an all-star ensemble cast, with Stewart giving one of his best performances. Thursday, Sept. 23-Odds Against Tomorrow (1959)- film noir/suspense, 95 min. Harry Belafonte, Robert Ryan, Shelley Winters, Gloria Grahame, Ed Begley, Directed by Robert Wise. A disgraced former detective recruits a mixed race gang to rob a bank. Unusual early social commentary. Thursday, Sept. 30-Robin and the 7 Hoods (1965)- musical, 124 min. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis, Jr., Barbara Rush, Peter Falk. The Robin Hood legend is transplanted to 1920s Chicago, with an opportunistic Maid Marian. Thursday, Oct. 7-They Were Expendable (1945)- war drama, 135 min. Robert Montgomery, John Wayne, Donna Reed, Ward Bond, Directed by John Ford. One of the most moving films of WWII follows a PT boat squadron in the Phillipines at the war’s outset. Thursday, Oct. 14-The Scalphunters (1968)- western, 102 min. Burt Lancaster, Ossie Davis, Shelley Winters, Telly Savalas, Directed by Sydney Pollack. Lighthearted western involving a trapper, a runaway slave, an outlaw gang, and Apaches. Thursday, Oct. 21-Captain Newman, MD (1963)- comedy/drama, 126 min. Gregory Peck, Tony Curtis, Angie Dickinson, Bobby Darin, Eddie Albert, Robert Duvall. During WWII, a military psychiatrist treats soldiers with PTSD to return them to service. Thursday, Oct. 28-The Haunting (1963)- thriller, 112 min. Halloween Special Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn, Directed by Robert Wise. From the Shirley Jackson classic, a scientist recruits people with ESP to stay in a “haunted” house. .
