D Medgar Evers College, CUNY 1650 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11225 USA Abstract The African American creative arts of dance, music, literature, theater and visual art continued to evolve during the country’s Great Depression due to the Stock Market crash in 1929. Creative expression was based, in part, on the economic, political and social status of African Americans at the time. World War II had an indelible impact on African Americans when they saw that race greatly affected their treatment in the military while answering the patriotic call like white Americans. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s had the greatest influence on African American creative expression as they fought for racial equality and civil rights. Artistic aesthetics was based on the ideologies and experiences stemming from that period of political and social unrest. Keywords: African American, creative arts, Great Depression, WW II, Civil Rights Movement, 1960s Introduction African American creative arts went through several periods of transition since arriving on the American shores with enslaved Africans. After emancipation, African characteristics and elements began to change as the lifestyle of African Americans changed. The cultural, social, economic, and political vicissitudes caused the creative flow and productivity to change as well. The artistic community drew upon their experiences as dictated by various time periods, which also created their ideologies. During the Harlem Renaissance, African Americans experienced an explosive period of artistic creativity, where the previous article left off.

This study documents the career of Joseph Eger (b. 1920), who had a short but remarkable playing career in the 1940’s, 1950’s and early 1960’s. Eger toured the United States and Britain as a soloist with his own group, even trading tours with the legendary British hornist, Dennis Brain. He recorded a brilliant solo album, transcribed or arranged several solos for horn, and premiered compositions now standard in the horn repertoire. He served as Principal Horn of the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the National Symphony. Despite his illustrious career as a hornist, many horn players today do not recognize his name. While Eger was a renowned horn soloist in the middle of the twentieth century, he all but disappeared as a hornist, refocused his career, and reemerged as a conductor, social activist, and author.

Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1019, Lot 50. Built 1912-13; architect, Henry B. Herts. On June 14 and 15, 1982 , the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a pub 1 ic hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Longacre Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.44). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Longacre Theater survives today as one of the historic playhouses that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Constructed in 1912-13, the Longacre was built to house the productions of Broadway producer and baseball magnate Harry H. Frazee . Designed for Frazee by Henry Herts, prominent theater architect, the Longacre is among the earliest surviving Broadway theaters, and has an exceptionally handsome facade. Like most Broadway playhouses built before World War I, the Longacre was designed by a leading theater architect to house the offices and theatrical productions of its owner. Though known as a baseball magnate, and at one time the owner of the Boston Red Sox, Frazee was also an influential Broadway producer who, besides building the Longacre theater, at one time also owned two other Broadway houses (the Harris and the Lyric).
