The trams have all the elements found in modern western counterparts, including air conditioning, GPS navigation, CCTV cameras, and have a strong focus on comfort with comfortable seats, digital information screens, passenger Wi-Fi and USB charging sockets etc. They can also run for up to 1.5km (0.9 miles) independent of the overhead wire thanks to onboard batteries; 455 trams have now rolled out of the factory for use in eight different cities, and hundreds more fill the future order books. The future of the Russian tram industry is therefore more assured than ever.

Moscow’s fleet renewal After Moscow’s modernisation ambitions were confirmed, Alstom was the first to respond and sent a prototype Citadis 302 from its site in Aytré (France) for demonstration in February 2012. Still in Moscow, this tram is now out of service, but the remaining four are in operation in Saint-Petersburg. For Alstom, the Russian story ended abruptly, on the one hand because the technologies employed were already outdated and the meagre and clumsily-designed interior did not stand a chance, on the other hand because the reciprocal embargoes with the West greatly weakened the Rouble and the import of trams from the EU became impractical. At that time, TMH also saw more opportunities in a collaboration with PK-TS. Stadler also entered the picture briefly, sending a prototype of the Minsk-built Metelitsa in February 2015, also known by the model number B85300M. This low-floor tram stayed for barely four months before returning to Minsk. This decision is due imminently. Within the overall context of the current Russian tram manufacturing industry described earlier, the available models, and the obligation for three decades of maintenance, one might reasonably conclude that PK-TS has a high likelihood of winning this contract. As soon as deliveries start, the Tatras will be grouped temporarily either in Apakov or Krasnopresnenskoye, depending on which gets the new vehicles first. The official goal is to have all tram depots operating 100% low-floor cars by the end of 2023, with a contracted service provider responsible for maintenance.

Budapest-built Ganz KCSV-7 (1300-series) and CSMG articulated stock (1300/1400-series) from the 1960s-70s are the oldest normal service trams: BKV identified 68 in service in 2019. With a capacity for about 200 passengers, they have three sections and are 26.9m long and 2.3m wide. Specified for Budapest, with production vehicles received 1980-84, the ČKD Tatra 4000-4300 series have been modified to T5C5K2 classification: most of the 332 delivered remained active in 2019. These 14.7m single cars, with a 100-passenger capacity, are commonly used in trains. Since 2001, Düwag/LHB TW6000/6100 built 1975-1977 joined the fleet as BKV’s1500 and 1600 series. Most of the 117 (BKV 2019) came direct from Hannover’s Üstra, some by way of Den Haag’s HTM. Folding steps for compatibility with Hannover’s dual height system allows for tramway use. They feature three sections, 27m long and with capacity for 176 passengers, 46 seated. Introducing low-floor trams to Budapest during 2006, the six-section Siemens Combino Supra NF12B (2001-40) built in Vienna have capacity for 350, 64 seated. They were retrofitted with air-conditioning shortly after entering service. CAF Urbos articulated stock is in 34m (2200-series, capacity 200) and 55.9m (2100-series, capacity 345) variants, respectively with five and nine modules. These air-conditioned, fully low-floor trams entered service from 2015, with 12 long and 35 short versions. Options taken up from the 2014 contract have seen more entering service into 2020. Some were assembled at the then-nationalised (later bought by Transmashholding) Dunakeszi railway works just north of Budapest.

Neil Pulling The orbital route of line 1 has been rebuilt for use by high-capacity stock, a 55.9m version of the CAF Urbos 3 which reasserted Budapest as running the longest passenger trams. Line 1’s July 2019 growth to 18.2km (11.4 miles) made it the system’s longest, scheduled for 51 minutes between termini. This added a southern Danube crossing, with the 1995 Rákóczi bridge gaining tram tracks (as per its original design) for access to Kelenföld station. The new tram terminus here is separate from the retained facility for lines 19 and 49. Also a bus station and a metro line 4 terminus, Kelenföld has been elevated from being a run-down outer suburban station to become a major transport hub and development zone. A shorter version of the same CAF stock has brought better passenger access around the network, although the stepped-access Ganz CSMG2 originating in the 1960s, Tatra T5C5K2 from 1980 and ex-Hannover Stadtbahn stock, remain in significant numbers. Although planning and direction passed to BKK, most operations have remained with city-owned Budapesti Közlekedési Zrt: its BKV abbreviation is a hangover from a former identity. Single tickets (as of June 2020) cost from HUF350 (approx. EUR1). For most public transport in the city area, Budapest travelcards are available in 24-hour, 72-hour and seven-day versions: HUF1650/4150/4950 (EUR4.80/12/14.30). Revenue protection is mainly undertaken by travelling teams.

You’ll quickly realise this if you try using a piece of stone wool insulation to control the powerful N vibrations on a railway track. MYTH 1 Stone wool is only used for thermal insulation and fire protection When most people think of stone wool, they think of the insulation material used in buildings to protect against fire and extreme temperatures. But did you know it is also used as reinforcement in car brakes, in stormwater management systems, or as resilient mats to control potential ground-borne noise and vibration nuisances generated by tramways and light rail systems in urban environments? Stone wool is produced from diabase rock – a naturally abundant material which is both durable and recyclable. So although produced from the same starting material, stone wool mats differ substantially from their insulation counterparts and are engineered to meet the high-performance requirements of rail systems.
