My analysis differs from past studies' suggestions that the strike was a libertarian eruption of mass protest against British imperialism and the Hongkong Government, which, according to these studies, exploited and oppressed Chinese in Guangdong and Hongkong. I argue that a political party, the CCP, led, organised, and nurtured the strike. It centralised political power in its hands and tried to impose its revolutionary visions on those under its control. First, I describe how foreign trade enriched many people outside the state. I go on to describe how Chinese-run institutions governed Hongkong's increasingly settled non-elite Chinese population. I reject ideas that Hongkong's mixed-class unions exploited workers and suggest that revolutionaries failed to transform Hongkong society either before or during the strike. My thesis shows that the strike bureaucracy was an authoritarian power structure; the strike's unprecedented political demands reflected the CCP's revolutionary political platform, which was sometimes incompatible with the interests of Hongkong's unions. I suggestthat the revolutionary elite's goals were not identical to those of the unions it claimed to represent: Hongkong unions preserved their autonomy in the face of revolutionaries' attempts to control Hongkong workers. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 Abstract Abstract This thesis considers the Chinese Blueshirts organisation from 1932 to 1938 in the context of Chiang Kaishek's attempts to unify and modernise China. It sets out the terms of comparison between the Blueshirts and Fascist organisations in Europe and Japan, indicating where there were similarities and differences of ideology and practice, as well as establishing links between them. It then analyses the reasons for the appeal of Fascist organisations and methods to Chiang Kaishek. Following an examination of global factors, the emergence of the Blueshirts from an internal point of view is considered. As well as assuming many of the characteristics of a Fascist organisation, especially according to the Japanese model and to some extent to the European model, the Blueshirts were in many ways typical of the power-cliques which were already an integral part of Chinese politics. -

In Shanghai, Chen Mingshu empowered Wang Lixi,1 former KMT peasant department director who had operated the peasant movement institute together with Mao Tse-tung and Li Hanjun in 1926, with running the “Light of the Devine Nation” Society as editor-in-chief. Through Weng Zhaoyuan and Huang Qiang, former officers under KMT rebel Chen Jiongming [who was elected premier of the Chinese Public Interest Party by overseas Chinese secret societies in 1925], Chen Mingshu connected with the „stateism‟ activist Chen Lianbo in HK,2 and absorbed Weng Zhaoyuan and Huang Qiang into the 19th Route Army. Having nominally returned to the 19th Route Army‟s command for laying siege of the Red Army in Jiangxi, Chen Mingshu secretly reached a triangular agreement with Third Party leader Deng Yanda and civil rights league director Yang Xingfo for an „uprising‟ against the central government, while commander Cai Tingkai in summer 1932 participated in the Third Siege Campaign and incurred a casualty of 3000 troops during a three-day and two-night battle with the Red Army in Xingguo of Jiangxi Province. During the 28 January 1932 Battle of Shanghai against Japanese aggression, a fight advocated by Weng Zhaoyuan‟s 156th Brigade with 200 members of the Chinese Youth Party, 19th Route Army, in close cooperation with Wang Yaqiao, recruited hatchet gang leader‟s followers, assassins and former officers who engaged in multiple rampage and assassinations against Chiang Kai-shek from 1928 onward. -

This is a pre-published version Building and Funding a Warlord Regime The Experience of Chen Jitang in Guangdong , 1929-1936 Alfred H.Y. Lin The University of Hong Kong Warlordism persisted, though appearing in a new form, after Jiang Jieshi completed the Northern Expedition. A contemporary political commentator ascribed this phenomenon to Jiang’s eagerness for military victory and his policy of appointing rival military leaders as commanders of the National Revolutionary Army. Warlords thus survived and continued to challenge the Nanjing government under the guise of armed comrades of the Guomindang (GMD), rendering “national reunification” nominal rather than real. The same commentator succinctly pinpointed three features of “separatist military rule” (junren geju): first, the elimination of all non-affiliated military units within the warlord’s sphere of influence; second, the appropriation of both national and local revenues by the warlord, as well as the expending of such revenues largely for military purposes; and third, the filling up of all government posts, at the provincial and sub-provincial levels, by the warlord’s henchmen (Hua Yan, 1932: 10). _____________ AUTHOR’S NOTE: I am grateful to the Committee of Management of the Hsu Long-sing Research Fund, The University of Hong Kong, for financing my research on Chen Jitang.
