Box 56, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +47-481-37-867 Abstract: Free-living species often receive greater conservation attention than the parasites they support, with parasite conservation often being hindered by a lack of parasite biodiversity knowl- edge. This study aimed to determine the current state of knowledge regarding parasites of the Southern Hemisphere freshwater fish family Galaxiidae, in order to identify knowledge gaps to focus future research attention. Specifically, we assessed how galaxiid–parasite knowledge differs among geographic regions in relation to research effort (i.e., number of studies or fish individuals examined, extent of tissue examination, taxonomic resolution), in addition to ecological traits known to influ- ence parasite richness. To date, ~50% of galaxiid species have been examined for parasites, though the majority of studies have focused on single parasite taxa rather than assessing the full diversity of macro- and microparasites. The highest number of parasites were observed from Argentinean galaxiids, and studies in all geographic regions were biased towards the highly abundant and most widely distributed galaxiid species, Galaxias maculatus. -

The copepod Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758 is known by the large spectrum of fish hosts which it infests, and to which it can cause haemorrhages and ulcerations. The paper focuses on some aspects of the relation between the Pumpkinseed sunfish and this copepod: infestation parameters, preferred attaching situs, relationship between the host size and parasitisation degree, as well as the visible effects of this parasite left on the fish body, in the Moara Domneascã Lake, Romania. Résumé. Le copépode Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758 est connu pour son grand spectre de poissons qu’il infeste et auxquels il peut produire des hémorragies ainsi que des ulcérations. Ce travail se concentre sur quelques aspects de la relation entre la perche arc-en-ciel et ce copépode: les paramètres de l’infestation, les sites d’attachement préférés, la relation entre les dimensions du poisson et le degré d’infestation par le parasite, ainsi que les effets visibles provoqués par ce parasite sur la surface du corps du poisson provenant du Lac Moara Domneascã (Roumanie). La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina Abstract Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus is an ectoparasitic copepod that infects the gills and skin of various freshwater fishes and amphibians tadpoles. It is capable of infecting fish at high levels, with high pathogenicity and mortality, mainly during the summer season. Besides the effects of penetration, haemorrhages and ulcerations are also caused. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of L. cyprinacea in natural bodies of water of Argentina in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Río Negro; the finding of the parasite in Choele-Choel, in the province of Río Negro, is the most austral distribution of its presence. In our study, infections with L. cyprinacea showed a low host specific and they were adapted to a large variety of habitats. TO, is endemic to Japan and occurs only in the Tokai District, central Honshu, Japan. The lernaeid copepod, Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758, and the argulid branchiuran, Argulus sp., were collected from specimens of this goby in Aichi Prefecture. TO INTRODUCTION The genus Rhinogobius (Perciformes: Gobioidei) is a specious gobiid group and currently consists of 17 valid species in Japan (Akihito et al., 2013). Some species of this genus, however, have not yet been identified at specific level, and tentative scientific names have been used for them. Rhinogobius sp. TO is an example of such use, and “TO” is used because the distribution of the species is restricted to the Tokai District, central Honshu (Suzuki and Sakamoto, 2005), where it occurs in four prefectures (Gifu, Mie, Aichi, and Shizuoka) (Suzuki and Mukai, 2010; Akihito et al., 2013). (2007), 46:21~33 New Host Records for Lernaea cyprinacea (Copepoda), a Parasite of Freshwater Fishes, with a Checklist of the Lernaeidae in Japan (1915-2007) Kazuya Nagasawa, Akiko Inoue, Su Myat and Tetsuya Umino Graduate School of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University 1-4-4 Kagamiyama, Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima 739-8528, Japan Abstract The lernaeid copepod Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758, was found attached to three species of freshwater fishes, the barbell steed Hemibarbus labeo (Pallas) (Cyprinidae), the dark chub Zacco temminckii (Temminck and Schlegel) (Cyprinidae), and the Amur catfish Silurus asotus Linnaeus (Siluridae) from Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. The findings from Hemibarbus labeo and Zacco temminckii represent new host records for L. cyprinacea, while Silurus asotus is a new host in Japan. Based on the literature published for 93 years from 1915 to 2007, a checklist of three species of lernaeid copepods (Lernaea cyprinacea, Lernaea parasiluri, Lamproglena chinensis) from Japan is given, including information on the synonym(s), host(s), site(s) of infection, and distribution. The checklist shows that in Japan L. cyprinacea has been reported from 33 or 34 species and subspecies of fishes belonging to 17 families in 10 orders and also from 2 species of amphibians from 2 families in 2 orders. Key words: Lamproglena chinensis; Lernaea cyprinacea; Lernaea parasiluri; Lernaeidae; parasites; new hosts INTRODUCTION The lernaeid copepod Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758, often called the anchor worm, is a parasite of freshwater fishes in various regions of the world (Kabata, 1979; Lester and Hayward, 2006). The anterior part of the body of metamorphosed adult female is embedded in the host tissue, whereas the remaining body protrudes in the water.
