I was asked to take charge of this program. The endeavor was extremely successful, bringing some ten scholars to the campus, each of whom gave at least two lectures or demonstrations. These events were well attended and were enthusiastically received by students, faculty, and town folk. It was the intention at the time to publish at least one of each scholar's papers in a volume in the series of Southeast Asia Papers. That intention suffered many delays from many causes, not the least ofwhich was the reorganization of the Southeast Asian Studies Program into the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, which became one of the units within the new School of Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Studies. The publication of these papers was literally lost in the shuffle. By the time the project was revived in early 1989, some of the scholars had used their papers for other purposes and others could not be reached, but six of the original participants agreed to submit their revised papers for publication in a single volume that would commemorate the Distinguished SCholars Lectures and also make available to a wider audience the views and concerns expressed by these scholars. This volume is now in hand. It was never the intention of the Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series to select speakers on the basis of a single theme. Rather, we hoped to bring to the University of Hawai'i campus scholars whose ideas and research were on the frontiers of their particular disciplines and who were thus laying down themes and patterns for future scholars to take into consideration. It is this fact that gives the papers in this volume a freshness that helps to overcome the delay in publication. But it is also this fact that results in the papers having little commonalty other than that they deal with Southeast Asia. It is well known that collections of diverse papers bound together in a volume such as this tend to become fugitive unless they strike a strong chord of scholarly interest and concern. While I am not versed in each of the disciplines represented by these papers, I feel certain that several of the papers in this volume ,will strike such a chord among readers. For my part, I shall attempt to provide pithy synopses of each author's contribution so that the reader will be moved to explore the contents of each paper more fully. In his paper on "The Art of Sitep (Sri Deva) in Thailand," which was accompanied by a slide show, Prince Subhadradis, Rector of Silapakorn University and an art historian, describes an early site on the Pasak River in north-central Thailand. The earliest influences were Indian from Gupta times and Dvaravati. Later, from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries, the site became a Khmer town. Excavations by the Thai Fine Arts Department have found indications of both Buddhist and Hindu influences. The town seems to have been abandoned in the early thirteenth century and was not again a settled site. Consequently the archaeological finds in the area help to reconstruct the early history of Thai and Khmer society. Professor Kenneth R. Hall of North Adams State College in Massachusetts has written a paper on "The Politics of Plunder in the Cham Realm of Early Vietnam." The organizational structure of the Cham "state" [Champa] which controlled the southern portion of present-day Vietnam from the second Ii Southeast Asia Papers Number 32 through the fifteenth centuries is explicated. The nature of this "state" was extremely segmentary, but the Cham peoples were held together through a shared value system that allowed a central authority to emerge. Cham kingship was closely related to the economic system: raiding and plundering were an essential part of Cham statecraft, supporting the royal position through redistribution of booty and captured slaves. A cultural relationship developed with Java that brought art styles and marriage partners to Champa, but this could not save the Cham realm from succumbing under the retributions of its neighbor to the north. Professor Shelly Errington, an anthropologist from the University of California, Santa Cruz, has provided "Two Lectures on Political Process in an 'Indic State'." These two lectures are closely interrelated and actually form a single recounting of the essential conclusions of her field work in Luwu, which is (or was) a "state" on the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) in Indonesia. The social relationships of the people of Luwu, both vertical and horizontal, and the system and symbols that guide these, are central in these two lectures. Persons familiar with the archipelago world of Southeast Asia will recognize the description of a hierarchical social structure as extant in former times in Luwu, but will also have experienced the changes that have been occurring since Indonesian independence. The deeply penetrating analysis of both the personal and the public aspects of living in a society that is always on the alert for aggressive penetration is so engagingly presented in these two lectures that everyone with an interest in Southeast Asia will gain something in the reading. Professor John Emigh of Brown University takes the reader into 'The Domains of Topeng," which is a solo masked dance-drama indigenous to the island of Bali, Indonesia. In this paper, the reader is not only enveloped in the intricacies of this form of popular dance-drama, but is also brought into touch with the broader practice and theory of dramatic performance on a world-wide basis. The result is a robust and penetrating analysis of the Balinese topeng, as it is seen by the Balinese and as it has been viewed by outsiders. When he visited the University of Hawai'i campus, Professor Emigh performed a topeng dance­ drama, "Little Red Riding Shawl," which served to bring home many of the points made in his paper as well as providing splendid entertainment for those in attendance. As a historian at Rutgers University, Professor Michael Adas analyzes a slice of modern Southeast Asian history in his paper, 'The Annex of the Raj: The Anglo-Indian Interlude in Burmese History, c. 1826-1941." Asking the question why post-independence Burma has isolated itself from the rest of the world, he finds the answer not in a simple response to British colonialism (which did not produce similar effects elsewhere), but rather in the unique situation of Burma being "twice-colonized." This refers to the flood of Indians who were brought in or came in with the British, who treated Burma as an adjunct to their Indian Empire [Raj]. First Indian precedents in governance and law, then Indian entrepreneurs, and finally Indian migrant laborers led to a situation in which Burmese felt themselves being displaced in their own country. It was this circumstance, argues Adas, that may underlie Burma's withdrawal from the world. November 1989 Southeast Asia Papers iii What is imperialism? This question is at the heart of Professor Stephen Rosskamm Shalom's paper on ''The United States and the Philippines: 'Sentimental' Imperialism or Standard Imperialism?" Professor Shalom is a political scientist on the faculty of William Patterson College in New Jersey. Applying political and economic arguments and interpretations, he argues strongly for regarding American policy, past and present, as imperialist in the standard, unadorned meaning of that word.

The yadnya ceremony that is seen and often performed on a daily basis by Hindus is an implementation of the teachings of Bhoutika bhakti, namely bhakti which is done by making various kinds of offerings or visiting holy places. Especially during pujawali/odalan, Hindus will flock to visit the temple with relatives, as a form of devotion and love to God for omnipotence. L. Eka M. It is rare in popular usage to distinguish between imperialism and colonialism. They are treated for most intents and purposes as synonyms. The same is true of many scholarly accounts, which move freely between imperialism and colonialism without apparently feeling any discomfort or need to explain themselves. So, for instance, Dane Kennedy defines colonialism as “the imposition by foreign power of direct rule over another people” (2016: 1), which for most people would do very well as a definition of empire, or imperialism. In the beginning, the meaning of penjor serves as a symbol of Mount Agung, and it developed as a human wisdom symbol. This research was conducted in Badung and Tabanan Regency, Bali using a qualitative method. The time scope of this research was not only on the Galungan and Kuningan holy days, where the penjor most commonly used in society. It also used on the other holy days, including when people hold the caru (offerings to the holy sacrifice) ceremony, in the temple, or any other ceremonial place and it is also displayed at competition events. The methods used were hermeneutics and verstehen. These methods served as a tool for the researcher to use to interpret both the phenomena and sentences involved. The results of this research show that the penjor has various meanings. It does not only serve as a symbol of Mount Agung and human wisdom; and it also symbolizes gratefulness because of God’s generosity and human happiness and cheerfulness.

Chapter 1 Imperialism: Materiality and Ideology It is first of all necessary, or at least convenient, to clarify what is meant by “em- pire”; such a clarification is in turn the basis upon which an analysis of imperialism, or imperial ideology, can proceed. The definition of empire has always been subject to debate, 1 and I hereby limit myself to two traditional definitions. The first is that of John Gilissen: 2 “un état souverain, un territoire relativement vaste, de multiples groupes socio-politiques, une certaine durée, la concentration du pouvoir entre les mains d’une même autorité, généralement monocratique, la tendance à l’hégémonie, voire à l’universalisation.” The second is that of Michael Doyle: 3 “Empire is a rela- tionship, formal or informal, in which one state controls the effective sovereignty of another political society. It can be achieved by force, by political collaboration, by economic, social, or cultural dependence. Imperialism is simply the process of es- tablishing or maintaining an empire.” The first definition includes—and the second omits—what is to my mind the essential prerequisite for any consideration of empire, namely the ideological principle, the “imperial mission”: imperialism as the mission to subjugate, or at least to impose hegemony over, the entirety of the known world. 4 Unfortunately, two opposed but equally superficial tendencies prevail in the com- pilation of lists of empires—one tendency applies the “empire” label widely, while the other restricts its use.

The decolonization of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa in the postwar decades appeared as the climax of a global paradigm shift that had begun with the American Revolution and that was to come to a successful conclusion with the 1989 collapse of the Soviet Union’s informal empire in Eastern Europe, followed two years later by the disintegration of the USSR itself into its constituent national republics. The excesses and dangers of nationalism, in turn, would be contained and offset by the general effects of economic and cultural globalization and by the development of supra-national structures, norms, and relationships such as those institutionalized in the European Union. Any hopes we might have had of a grand historical dialectic between the universal and the particular achieving final resolution in a post-Cold War, liberal-internationalist synthesis have since been thoroughly dashed. Today we live in an era in which Russia is challenging post-1991 borders in Europe, China is laying claim to the South China Sea while the United States “pivots” to Asia, jihadists are aspiring to replace the nation-state with a caliphate in the Islamic world, and the great and middle-ranking powers of the Euro-Atlantic zone are drawn into a seemingly never-ending series of military interventions in areas of the world where what once were considered nation-states have partly or utterly collapsed—in some cases under the impact of those very military interventions.

Condee The role of women in Bali must be understood in relationship to tradition, because “tradition” is an important concept for analyzing Balinese culture, social hierarchy, religious expression, and politics. Wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, is considered an important Balinese tradition because it connects a mythic past to a political present through public, and often religiously significant ritual performance. The dalang, or puppeteer, is the central figure in this performance genre and is revered in Balinese society as a teacher and priest. Until recently, the dalang has always been male, but now women are studying and performing as dalangs. In order to determine what women in these “non-traditional” roles means for gender hierarchy and the status of these arts as “traditional,” I argue that “tradition” must be understood in relation to three different, yet overlapping, fields: the construction of Bali as a “traditional” society, the role of women in Bali as being governed by “tradition,” and the performing arts as both “traditional” and as a conduit for “tradition.” This dissertation is divided into three sections, beginning in chapters two and three, with a general focus on the “tradition” of wayang kulit through an analysis of the objects and practices of performance.

    TOPIK IDENTIFIKASI KOLEKTIF DAN IDEOLOGISASI JIHAD: STUDI KUALITATIF TERORIS DI INDONESIA G A Z I S A L O O M*) ABSTRAK Artikel ini menggambarkan bahwa para teroris setidaknya di Indonesia adalah kumpulan orang normal yang memiliki pikiran yang sehat dan memiliki tujuan jangka panjang untuk menegakkan sistem pemerintahan Islam yang berdasarkan ajaran Al-Qur’an dan Hadis. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data yang dilakukan melalui wawancara, telaah dokumen, dan informasi media tentang teroris dan terorisme. Satu orang mantan teroris yang pernah terlibat dalam kasus Bom Bali 1 dipilih untuk menjadi responden penelitian. Data yang diperoleh dari hasil wawancara mendalam dan telaah dokumen dianalisa dengan teori identitas sosial dan teori kognisi sosial mengenai ideologisasi jihad. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa proses perubahan orang biasa menjadi teroris sangat berkaitan dengan ideologisasi jihad dan pencarian identitas. KATA KUNCI: Psikopat, Gangguan Mental, Normal, Islam ABSTRACT This article articulates that the terrorists in Indonesia are basically a group of normal people who have sound minds and a long-term goal to establish an Islamic government system based on the teachings of the Quran and Hadith. This study employed qualitative approach by acquiring the data through interviews, document analysis and media information covering terrorists and terrorism. A former terrorist involved in Bali bombing I served as the research informant. Data from in-depth interviews and document analysis were analyzed by utilizing social identity and social cognition theory about ideology of jihad. The article concludes that the changing process from the ordinary people into the terrorist strongly relates to jihad ideology and search for identity.

    SPECIAL EVENT FOR THE ASIA SOCIETY PHILIPPINES FOUNDATION AT THE BALI PURNATI CENTER FOR THE ARTS 1. WELCOME music is played for the arriving guests from Jalan Gunung Abang to the Purnati. 2. In the entrance area a white “wall” of fabric is a stage for a PUPPET SHADOW SHOW and puppet performers with attractions involving about10 children-actors. 3. Single BARIS Dance by a12 years old performer is followed by six KAKANG-KAKANG dancers coming down the stairs and dancing at the entrance area while guests enjoy a welcome drink 4. After finishing Kakang-Kakang the dancers are guiding the guests up the stairs followed by KODOK, twenty FROG DANCERS (wearing frog masks), guiding everyone through the gardens to the pool side for a cocktail party 5. The cocktail party is accompanied by a KERONCONG singer. The guests are then slowly lead by the pavilion to hear instrumental music similar to that composed for I La Galigo 6. Flute music for PAKARENA dance from Makassar and Pencak Silat (of South Sulawesi) is then coming from the amphitheatre, accompanied by traditional drums with new composition for this famous, traditional female dance with fans 7. A male traditional fire dance from Makassar, TUTU-PEPEKA RI MAKKAH is then performing on the wooden covers over the small river as guests are coming down from the amphitheater followed by a procession of musicians 8. Balinese BARONG dance is staged atop a small hill next to the pavilion 9. Barong is followed by BARIS GEDE Dance of ten male dancers at the amphitheater and the show is continued with a grand finale, a contemporary new dance that includes all the PAKARENA dancers 10.
