Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana.

Numerous species were present in the royal and private botanical gardens of the region, but their number has decreased today. The purpose of this work was to verify which species occur nowadays in the public areas of Naples and associate them with the historical information about their introduction. The identification was carried out also by molecular methods, by means of sequencing nuclear and chloroplast DNA markers. The comparison of the sequences obtained for the specimens present in Naples with those present in the literature, together with a morphological examination, allowed us to identify with accuracy the species anciently introduced or nowadays cultivated in Naples.   • Isoflavonoids

Foudah and Maged Saad Abdel-Kader Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.68701 Abstract Isoflavonoids are interesting class of natural products due to their positive effects on human health. Isoflavonoids include isoflavones, isoflavanones, isoflavans, rotenoids and pterocarpans. Although they are reported from many plant families, most isoflavonoids are produced by the subfamily Papilionaceae of the Fabaceae. Various chromatographic methods have been applied for the purification of isoflavonoids. SimpleUltra Violet (UV) absorption spectra as well as both One and two dimensional NMR (1D- and 2D-NMR) are critical for the identification of isoflavonoids. Each class of isoflavonoids has its unique feature in both 1H- and 13C-NMR that enable their proper characterization. High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) is a substantial tool in such challenge. In vitro experiments indicated that isoflavonoids possess antioxidant, antimutagenic, antiprolif- erative as well as cancer preventive effects. Epidemiological studies provide support for some of these effects on human. Members of this class also are reported to have antimi- crobial activity. In this chapter, isoflavones, isoflavanones, isoflavans, homoisoflavonoids and isoflavenes will be discussed in relation to their occurrence, methods of purification, spectral characters helpful in structure elucidation as well as their biological importance. Introduction Genstin (1) was the first isolated isoflavone from Genista tinctoria known as Dyer’s Brrom in 1899 [1]. Later in 1926 [2], the structure was identified. Genstin 1( ) was isolated from Soybeans in 1941 [3]. Although the main source of isoflavonoids is member of the Fabaceae 4[ ], some were reported from other families such as Amaranthaceae [5, 6], Rosacease [7] and Poaceae [8].

A mi adorada esposa Gladys Robles por su amor, compresión y aliento, gracias a ella logré culminar mi meta profesional A mis queridos hijos: Víctor Eduardo, Diana Carolina y Claudia Geraldine en quienes cifro mis esperanzas. 2 R E S U M E N Se realizó el estudio Taxonómico e histológico, de seis especies del género Erythrina L. en Selva Alta de los departamentos de Huánuco, Junín, Pasco y Ucayali.; se ha elaborado una clave para la determinación de las especies en base a los caracteres vegetativos de los elementos foliares, y otra en base a las características morfológicas de flores y frutos. La parte histológica se efectuó en hojas, pecíolos y ramitas terminales; E. ulei posee hojas hipoestomáticas con estomas anisocíticos, las cinco restantes son hojas anfiestomáticas (E. crista-galli, E. edulis y E. berteroana tienen estomas ciclocíticos; E. fusca y E. poeppigiana estomas anomocíticos; E. berteroana estomas anisocíticos; E. edulis estomas paracíticos); las seis especies tienen tricomas capitados pluricelulares con mayor abundancia en el envés de la hoja y además poseen papilas, a excepción de E. ulei y E. Poeppigiana. En el estudio anatómico del pecíolo se contaron el número de haces vasculares de la sifonostela, los cuales tienen una estructura similar al tallo; en éste último se analizó con mayor detalle en la sección transversal, el tipo y distribución de los vasos (poros), tipos de parénquimas, en base a los cuales se elaboraron claves de determinación taxonómica; en la sección longitudinal se observó laticíferos articulados, en la zona cortical; en el xilema se observan elementos de vasos con engrosamientos helicoidales, escalariformes y reticulados, opuestos y alternos con platinas de perforación inclinada.

Nevertheless, explorations of the vegetation are relatively rare. Our study aims to supplement a recent checklist of vascular plants of Angola. Methods – Data were collected during 17 field trips between 2013 and 2018, during which herbarium specimens were prepared for later identification of plant species. The results were compared with the current checklist as well as with other floristic works, herbarium collections and online databases relevant for the region. Key results – We document 20 new records of indigenous vascular plant species for the flora of Angola (19 species and one subspecies), including four new generic records. Furthermore, nine alien species are added to the checklist of the flora of Angola. Conclusion – Our results confirm that the flora of northern Angola is composed by elements of various adjacent areas.
