Children, Death, and the Dead: the Mebengokré-Xikrin Case
Horiz. antropol. vol.5 no.se Porto Alegre 2011 Children, death, and the dead: the Mebengokré-Xikrin case Clarice Cohn 1 ABSTRACT This article approaches the relations children entertain with the dead, as well as with their own death risk, among the Mebenkogré-Xikrin, an indigenous Jê-speaking Indigenous group living in the North of Brazil. These themes are developed by analyzing the fabrication of the body, the formation of the self and the person, and the relations with the dead, with a special focus on children. Mebengokré-Xikrin notions of childhood are therefore discussed in an innovative manner through the formation of the self and the child’s relations with the cosmos and the dead, by looking at the eventuality of caputre by the spirits of the dead, their adoption in the after-life, the mourning of children, their bodily adornments and painting, how they should be taken care of in life in order to prevent death, and their bodies and social interactions. -

Compared to occlusal dental wear, labial/buccal abrasion is seldom documented in prehistoric groups. This type of wear occurs in some ethnographic-present and living populations and leaves telltale facets on non-occlusal vestibular surfaces associated with labrets. Methods and materials. For detailed macroscopic, microscopic (binocular and SEM) and thin- sectioned analysis we focused on the early Neolithic site of Mehrgarh in Pakistan where labial/buccal wear is found in mostly older adult males. We studied 215 teeth from ten individuals from the site. From the literature and some personal observations, we review evidence from the Czech early Upper Paleolithic and many later sites in the Old and New Worlds. Results. For Mehrgarh macroscopic observations revealed numerous teeth with labial and buccal facets affecting nearly every Bull Int Assoc Paleodont. -
Piercingworkshop Geschichte Des Modernen Piercings Bereits in Den

Before moving to Oxford he taught in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. His email is [email protected]. The Mursi live in the far southwest of Ethiopia, about 100 km north of the Kenyan border, in the valley of the River Omo. They number less than 10,000 and are one of the last groups in Africa amongst whom it is still the norm for women to wear large pottery or wooden ‘plates’ in their lower lips.1 The lip-plate has become the chief visible dis- tinguishing characteristic of the Mursi, in coffee-table books and travel articles in weekend newspapers (see Figs 1 and 2). It has also made them a prime attraction for tourists, as the following quotation from an article in a Fig.1. An article by James South African newspaper indicates. -

Imperfection Work Sheet
Pedagoger: Nina Setterberg och Teresa Romano Snuggle with Pam Imperfection Work sheet A. Did you know? The French artist ORLAN (real name Mireille Suzanne Francette Porte) has dedicated several years of her life to undergoing plastic surgery in the name of art. The art project is called “the Reincarnation of Sainte-Orlan” and started out in the 1990’s. During this long-term project, Orlan has put herself under the knife, filming her surgeries, often broadcasting them live, in order to transform her face into a face with the beauty ideals of male artists throughout history. Once all the surgery is complete, Orlan will have the chin of Botticelli’s Venus, the lips of François Boucher’s Europa, the eyes of Diana from a 16th century French painting and the forehead of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Orlan chose the beauty ideals listed above on account of the stories told around the women and not based on their beauty alone. What do you think of the result? before after B. Discuss Before you discuss Imperfection in class prepare by writing down your answers to the questions on a piece of paper. Use the pictures for inspiration! Hand in anonymously to your teacher. The discussion will be based on your thoughts and those of your peers. 1.What examples of body modification do you think would be interesting to discuss in class? 2. There are many examples of body modification among women. What examples are there among men? 3. Who dictates what is an imperfection or what is not? 4. -
