„Body Modification“ has become a keyword for several consternating practices like tattoos, body piercing, brandings, scarifications, implants, sewings or amputations. None of the named techniques are new. There is proof that ancient cultures had already practiced those modifications and if this altering of the human body should be described as a psychological illness, as it was in earlier literature, then body modification could be considered one of the oldest diseases in the history of mankind. Normally, body modifications do not express mental disorders. When compared to self-mutilation, these two practices exhibit differences but also similarities. Body Modification is not conceived as damaging to the body, but instead is considered to be a form of beautification, self-development or even self-therapy, which enables body and soul to be experienced as one in today’s digitized world. In contrast to other countries, there have been no studies on Body Modification in Switzerland so far. Thus, this paper represents anad- vance approach into a new field of research. 129 students of the University of Zurich spoke of theirbody piercing in a questionnaire developed specifically for this purpose. The participants did not exhibit any pathological peculiarities. However, the attitude towards body piercing in general and towards genital piercing specifically tended to be conservative. Concerning the reasons for modifying the body, apiercing manifests rich and individual symbolic character: The body, looked at from the outside, represents the inner self. “I needed to remind myself never to go back to that dark of a place:” Queer community members in the Flint Hills region of Kansas communicating challenges of/with mental health through body art and non-surgical body modifications by Jacquelyn Ann Mattson B.S., Kansas State University, 2016 B.S., Kansas State University, 2016 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS Department of Communication Studies College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2019 Approved by: Major Professor Timothy J. Shaffer, Ph.D. Copyright © Jacquelyn Ann Mattson 2019 Abstract This thesis explores experiences of mental health among some queer community members in the Flint Hills region of Kansas. This research specifically investigates how the queer community in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, i.e. anyone who identifies with a marginalized sexuality and/or gender identity, communicates their experiences with mental health through their pieces of body art and/or non-surgical body modifications, which are defined as tattoos, piercings, scarification, and intentional branding, to themselves and others. The Flint Hills region of Kansas is defined as the cities of Manhattan, Junction City, Fort Riley, Riley, Wamego, Ogden, and Abilene. Centered within multiple theoretical frameworks from critical and communication studies disciplines, this thesis examines the stories and experiences behind the imagery and adaptations to some of the queer bodies, in this specific location, as it communicates experiences with mental health. Body art/non- surgical body modifications are a road map to the traumas we have experienced; the scars show our resilience.

  • Genital Piercings: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications for Urologists Thomas Nelius, Myrna L
Ambulatory and Office Urology Genital Piercings: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications for Urologists Thomas Nelius, Myrna L. Armstrong, Katherine Rinard, Cathy Young, LaMicha Hogan, and Elayne Angel OBJECTIVE To provide quantitative and qualitative data that will assist evidence-based decision making for men and women with genital piercings (GP) when they present to urologists in ambulatory clinics or office settings. Currently many persons with GP seek nonmedical advice. MATERIALS AND A comprehensive 35-year (1975-2010) longitudinal electronic literature search (MEDLINE, METHODS EMBASE, CINAHL, OVID) was conducted for all relevant articles discussing GP. RESULTS Authors of general body art literature tended to project many GP complications with potential statements of concern, drawing in overall piercings problems; then the information was further replicated. Few studies regarding GP clinical implications were located and more GP assumptions were noted. Only 17 cases, over 17 years, describe specific complications in the peer-reviewed literature, mainly from international sources (75%), and mostly with “Prince Albert” piercings (65%). Three cross-sectional studies provided further self-reported data. CONCLUSION Persons with GP still remain a hidden variable so no baseline figures assess the overall GP picture, but this review did gather more evidence about GP wearers and should stimulate further research, rather than collectively projecting general body piercing information onto those with GP. With an increase in GP, urologists need to know the specific differences, medical implica- tions, significant short- and long-term health risks, and patients concerns to treat and counsel patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Targeted educational strategies should be developed. Considering the amount of body modification, including GP, better legislation for public safety is overdue.
