There he was dancing and moving to the music like only Mick can. Jagger was showing the world that, despite recent heart surgery, he is not slowing down. After years of hard touring and the excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle, Mick, Keith, and the rest of the Stones remain vital. During decades of near constant work, during which many of their contemporaries have failed, they have amassed fortunes. I described their investing process back in January of 2003. When John and Yoko were in Montreal staging their second and last Bed-In For Peace they were visited by Timothy Leary, an outspoken proponent of LSD. During their visit, Leary and his wife participated in John and Yoko’s hotel room recording of “Give Peace A Chance,” singing on the chorus. Timothy is even name-checked in the lyrics. He asked John to write a song titled “Come Together – Join The Party” for his bid to become governor of California. Lennon obliged and responded with lyrics such as: “Come together right now/Don’t come tomorrow, don’t come alone/Come together right now over me.” Lennon recorded a demo for Leary, who started using it as his campaign song. After being imprisoned for possession of marijuana in late 1969, Leary dropped out of the gubernatorial race, which was won by Ronald Reagan. Lennon reworked and expanded the song for the Beatles. The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John The Beatles’ twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The “Get Back” single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day.

Necrophilia Metamorphosis is the album the Rolling Stones had nothing to do with and did not want to see released, it was also the culmination of a 3-year effort by the Stones to produce just such a compilation that began with Necrophilia. Hot Rocks 1964–1971 was a compilation album that had been released December 20, 1971 by London Records. It is also the best-selling release of the Stones’ career. In 1972, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Stones original manager, began compiling an album for release as the follow-up to Hot Rocks. It was entitled Necrophilia and it featured previously unreleased or, more accurately, discarded outtakes from the Stones' Decca/London period. Designed by Fabio Nicoli as a tri- gatefold album it used photos from Gered Menkowitz’s Between the Buttons photoshoot for the outer cover. The inside of the unreleased Necrophilia was recycled and used for the cover of More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies) in December 1972. 1. Rhule (guest post)* Sam Cooke Recalling Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” So much has been written over these many decades about “A Change is Gonna Come,” Sam Cooke’s mellifluous and soulful ode to the struggles, yet prevailing hopes, of a black citizen living under the oppression of Jim Crow laws in the segregated South, that one may wonder, with 2019 approaching to mark the 55th year of its release to the public, exactly what is left to learn of the song’s etymology, and how it may be inextricably bound to the life experiences of its composer /lyricist. The answer, succinctly put, is plenty. Furthermore, unknown to the public are several intrinsic, key factors related to Sam Cooke’s personal and professional lives that, ironically, were played out against the backdrop of the Civil Rights era in which he lived and worked. It is a commonly held truth by those who knew and worked with Sam that the song was first inspired by the awe he felt and expressed for singer Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.” During a dinner break from his on-the-road performance travels, Sam, in the company of his band, tuned on the hotel room TV to watch the now-infamous 1963 March on Washington, and heard Dylan’s stirring and equally infamous anti-Jim Crow folk protest ballad. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.
