  • How the Rolling Stones Amassed a Fortune Where Others Have Failed
How the Rolling Stones Amassed a Fortune Where Others Have Failed Last week Mick Jagger shared some video of his cardio workout routine. There he was dancing and moving to the music like only Mick can. Jagger was showing the world that, despite recent heart surgery, he is not slowing down. After years of hard touring and the excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle, Mick, Keith, and the rest of the Stones remain vital. During decades of near constant work, during which many of their contemporaries have failed, they have amassed fortunes. I described their investing process back in January of 2003. I wrote: Geezers in Wheelchairs… This year is the 40th anniversary of the world’s greatest rock & roll band—the Rolling Stones. Grizzled but game, the Stones truck on with their 15th North American tour. “Always precocious, the Stones at 60 look a lot like Segovia at 90: Keep the morgue on standby,” wrote the very funny Joe Queenan in the WSJ. The Stones are big business, real big business. As Fortune noted in its recent cover story, “The Stones have made more money than U2, or Springsteen, or Michael Jackson…or the Who—or whoever.” The topgrossing North American tour of all time was the Stones’ 1994 Voodoo Lounge tour. With a gross of over $120 million, these guys know how to make money and how to keep it. Jagger went to the London School of Economics. For me and perhaps for you, the really big news on the Stones is the recent hybrid (two layers) SACD release of the band’s pre-1971 material owned by Allen Klein and his ABKCO Records (the Stones’ longtime early label).

MUSIC – Muddy Waters, Rollin’ Stone via Spotify (Play 30secs then turn down) It all started with Muddy Waters. A chance meeting between 2 old friends at Dartford railway station marked the beginning of 50 years of rock and roll. In the early 1950s, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were childhood friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School in Kent until their families moved apart.[8] In 1960, the pair met again on their way to college at Dartford railway station. The Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records that Jagger carried revealed a mutual interest. They began forming a band with Dick Taylor and Brian Jones from Blues Incorporated. This band also contained two other future members of the Rolling Stones: Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts.[11] So how did the name come about? Well according to Richards, Jones christened the band during a phone call to Jazz News.

1 SUING THE BEATLES AND OTHERS: PERILS AND PRECEDENTS OF CELEBRITY LAWSUITS PRESENTED TO THE SXSW CONFERENCE CLE PROGRAM MARCH 2016 BY STAN SOOCHER, ESQ. Denver, Colorado Editor-in-Chief, Entertainment Law & Finance Author, Baby You’re a Rich Man: Suing The Beatles for Fun & Profit Associate Professor, Music & Entertainment Industry Studies University of Colorado Denver Campus Box 162, P.O. Box 173364 Denver, CO 80217-3364 303-556-4066 [email protected] www.stansoocher.com Celebrities, with deep pockets and media spotlights, are natural lightning rods for litigation. The Beatles were a prime example of artists suing and being sued. The band’s most important legacy, of course, was their music, and influence on cultural and sociological changes. But few celebrities encountered as many legal disputes as did the Beatles. Many of the legal issues the Beatles faced were forerunners for today’s music industry. From early issues with crowd control as Beatlemania took hold in the United Kingdom in 1963 and the United States in 1964, to disputes over merchandising, management, intra-band rights, sound recordings, music publishing, copyright infringement, immigration, taxes and more, the Beatles faced—and continued to face long after they broke up—an array of issues that reflected where the music industry was headed. My recent book Baby You’re a Rich Man: Suing The Beatles for Fun & Profit (ForeEdge/University Press of New England) takes a close-up, investigative look at some of these concerns, as did a chapter from a prior book I wrote, They Fought the Law: Rock Music Goes to Court, that focused on the Beatles’ long-running music royalty battle with Capitol-EMI Records.

1 2 PLAYLIST SEPT. 22nd 2013 9AM The Beatles - Come Together - Abbey Road (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John 3 The Beatles’ twenty-first single release for EMI, and fourth on the Apple Records label. When John and Yoko were in Montreal staging their second and last Bed-In For Peace they were visited by Timothy Leary, an outspoken proponent of LSD. During their visit, Leary and his wife participated in John and Yoko’s hotel room recording of “Give Peace A Chance,” singing on the chorus. Timothy is even name-checked in the lyrics. He asked John to write a song titled “Come Together – Join The Party” for his bid to become governor of California. Lennon obliged and responded with lyrics such as: “Come together right now/Don’t come tomorrow, don’t come alone/Come together right now over me.” Lennon recorded a demo for Leary, who started using it as his campaign song. After being imprisoned for possession of marijuana in late 1969, Leary dropped out of the gubernatorial race, which was won by Ronald Reagan. Lennon reworked and expanded the song for the Beatles. The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John The Beatles’ twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The “Get Back” single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day.

Hot Rocks 1964–1971 was a compilation album that had been released December 20, 1971 by London Records. It is also the best-selling release of the Stones’ career. In 1972, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Stones original manager, began compiling an album for release as the follow-up to Hot Rocks. It was entitled Necrophilia and it featured previously unreleased or, more accurately, discarded outtakes from the Stones' Decca/London period. Designed by Fabio Nicoli as a tri- gatefold album it used photos from Gered Menkowitz’s Between the Buttons photoshoot for the outer cover. “A Change is Gonna Come”—Sam Cooke (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by B.G. Rhule (guest post)* Sam Cooke Recalling Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” So much has been written over these many decades about “A Change is Gonna Come,” Sam Cooke’s mellifluous and soulful ode to the struggles, yet prevailing hopes, of a black citizen living under the oppression of Jim Crow laws in the segregated South, that one may wonder, with 2019 approaching to mark the 55th year of its release to the public, exactly what is left to learn of the song’s etymology, and how it may be inextricably bound to the life experiences of its composer /lyricist. The answer, succinctly put, is plenty. Furthermore, unknown to the public are several intrinsic, key factors related to Sam Cooke’s personal and professional lives that, ironically, were played out against the backdrop of the Civil Rights era in which he lived and worked. It is a commonly held truth by those who knew and worked with Sam that the song was first inspired by the awe he felt and expressed for singer Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.” During a dinner break from his on-the-road performance travels, Sam, in the company of his band, tuned on the hotel room TV to watch the now-infamous 1963 March on Washington, and heard Dylan’s stirring and equally infamous anti-Jim Crow folk protest ballad. Yet, contrary to what some have written in stating that Sam was “angry” that a white boy wrote the song (which would have run totally counter to his lack of prejudice, a fact bolstered by his

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.
