Basketball Positions Coventry Parks and Recreation Department Coventry Youth Basketball Association Guide to Fundamentals of Basketball Positions A basketball team consists of the following basketball player positions: two guards, two forwards and one center. Even though there are two guard and two forward basketball positions, each has different roles and responsibilities. Have you ever heard a coach or announcer call some basketball players’ positions by a number rather than a name? The following information defines each basketball position: Position #1: Point Guard: The point guard (lead guard) often acts like a football quarterback, calling plays and directing the offense. It’s the point guard’s job to bring the ball up the court and set up the plays. Therefore, this player is usually a team’s best dribbler and passer. This position is very, very important to a team’s success. Position #2: Shooting Guard: This guard has similar duties to the point guard but usually does not bring the ball up the court. Can also be called an “off” guard. Even though they do not set up the offense or handle the ball as much as the point guard, they can actually play both positions well. The big difference between the point guard and shooting guard is that the shooting guard is usually one of the team’s best scorers. They are counted on to hit from the outside and usually take more shots than the point guard. A player that can combine the skills of both guard positions is the most dangerous. Position #3: Small Forward: Just because they are called “small” forwards does not mean they are actually physically small. They are known primarily for their scoring and ball handling abilities. This position is usually handled by the most talented player on the court. Position #4: Power Forward: Also, can be called a “big” forward, these players are usually a bit bigger and stronger than other players and known for their size, defense and rebounding. Sometimes, power forwards like Karl Malone or Charles Barkley are also known for scoring a lot. Most, though, are best known for being their team’s best rebounder and defender. Position #5: Center: This basketball position is very important to both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Centers are usually the tallest players on the court and are often the focal point of their team’s offense. A center’s duties are just as important on defense. They have to defend the opponent’s center (who can also be a monster player) as well as block shots and rebound. Bonus Position: The Sixth Man: Never under-estimate the importance of the quality of play your team gets off the bench. The main substitute to come off the bench is called the “sixth man” and is a basketball player position that is important to the success of all teams. The sixth man can either play a variety of positions or does one specific thing very well. These specialties may include skills such as being a great long-range shooter, playing solid defense or being able to play two or three positions well. • Developing Small Forwards by Mike Procopio
Developing Small Forwards By Mike Procopio The Small Forward is very similar to a shooting guard as far as the skills that need to be developed. Usually the small forward is bigger than the shooting guard, which will open up more opportunities on both ends of the floor. Small forwards tend to handle the ball more in the offense than shooting guards do unless their team starts a combo guard or multiple point guards in the rotation. Most of your routine that you develop for a small forward workout should be similar than the drills used form the shooting guard workout. Where the workouts differ is the amount of screen and roll and offense off of the dribble should be increased in the small forward workout. Also, if the small forward that you are working with is bigger say 6'5 or taller at the high school/ college level or 6'6 or taller at the pro level a lot of post work should be incorporated in the routine. Opening Developing a small forward is like developing a point guard, shooting guard, and post player all in one. A small forward needs to know how to clear their defender so when you start working on off the dribble offense emphasize going somewhere with the dribble. Repetitions just like any position is very important with their mid and deep ranged jumpers. A player's physical traits (size, athletic ability, and skill) has a big impact on the workout that you put them through. Don't cookie cut your small forward workout for all small forwards.

  • Comprehension Builders Research Reveals That the Single Most Valuable Activity for Developing Students’ Com- Prehension Is Reading Itself
Daily Comprehension Builders Research reveals that the single most valuable activity for developing students’ com- prehension is reading itself. At its core, comprehension is an active process in which students think about text and gain meaning from it. In order for them to build compe- tence in comprehension, their reading should be purposeful and reflective. It should foster the exploration of genre, language, and information. Daily Comprehension Build- ers is a resource that provides the instructional framework to help your students build strength in comprehension and achieve success in reading! Comprehension Basics Comprehension begins with what a student knows about a topic. It builds as a child reads and actively makes connections between new information and prior knowledge. Understanding is increased as the student organizes what he has read in relationship to what he already knows. To successfully comprehend, students need to master a variety of critical skills, such as constructing word meanings from context, determin- ing main ideas and locating details to support them, sequencing, inferring and drawing conclusions, making generalizations, predicting, summarizing, and sensing an author’s purpose. Daily Comprehension Builders provides multiple opportunities for reinforcing these essential skills, resulting in increased learning and competence in reading. About This Book Thirty-six high-interest reading selections, each accompanied by five activities and two to three reproducible skill sheets, are featured in this book. (See the unit features detailed below.) Each unit is clearly organized and highlights one of the following topics or genres: sports, famous people, animals, oddities, real-life mysteries, and adventure. Use each unit in its entirety, or pick and choose activities to build specific skills.

Develop Your Knowledge of the Basketball Rules Answer the questions and improve your knowledge of Basketball The answers are on the page after the questions to help you Assignment Task 1. RULES Basketball Rules 1 Why are there rules In basketball? (ensures safety and fair competition otherwise it would be chaos) 2 How is a game of basketball started/ restarted? 2a Started 2b Restarted 3 How many players can you have on the pitch at any time? Why it is important to have rules in sports? If there were no rules in sports, then there really wouldn't be anything. Rules bring order and fairness, without rules there would be chaos, and it wouldn't be a real game; just a bunch of people doing there own thing with no goal or point. The game would actually be boring without rules. Rules are very important for anything because they make things more interesting and managed. If there were no rules in sports, then they would become boring because nobody would understand that what is going on or what not. Rules are what actually define what the game is!! If no rules existed at all, one could use boxing gloves another might use cricket balls, and another player might just run around beating people up. It is the rules that actually tell us what the sport is: including what equipment is used and what the boundaries are. Without it there would be no sports Sports have rules so everyone can play fair and there can be a winner and a loser, each of which conditions teach valuable life lessons for all.
