The papers presented in the proceedings are not grouped by themes but rather by the order they were presented in the conference programme. The monster was a popular cultural phenomenon in sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain, appearing in a variety of scientific and literary genres. The monster was not just an extraordinary and unusual creature that elicited reactions of awe, wonder, and terror; it was also considered a sign from God that required careful interpretation to comprehend its meaning. The monster also embodies those characteristics that a society deems undesirable, and so by contrast, it shows what a society accepts and desires as part of its identity. In Lope de Vega’s (1562-1635) comedias, the playwright depicts characters who challenged the social, political, and religious conventions of his time as monsters. This study of Lope’s monsters intends to understand how and why Lope depicted these characters as monsters, and what they can tell us about the behaviors, beliefs, and traditions that Lope rejected as unacceptable or undesirable parts of the Spanish collective identity.

Rodrigo Faúndez Carreño* La mayor parte de los análisis críticos de que ha sido objeto La Araucana1 desde la publicación de su primera parte en 1569, se han desarrollado a partir de una visión parcial de ella. Los críticos literarios en el curso de los siglos han elogiado o vituperado sus méritos épicos a partir de una concepción aristotélica del género2 lo que ha tenido como consecuencia considerar tradicionalmente a la obra como un poema menor y defectuoso debido a que carece de un protagonista central, participa el autor en el relato y se introducen una serie de pasajes amorosos y bélicos ajenos al curso inicial de la narración: la guerra entre españoles y araucanos. Por su parte la crítica histórica se ha centrado en develar los perjuicios que cumple la introducción de elementos poéticos que invisten bajo atributos de héroes clásicos los rasgos y caracteres indígenas.3 Ante estas concepciones parciales propongo un estudio interdisciplinario que analiza los elementos literarios inmanentes de La Araucana desde una perspectiva historicista que rescata su diálogo (poético) con el medio social que condiciona el sentido de su discurso.4 Estas *Licenciado en Historia Universidad de Chile, abril del 2005. 1 Para el presente trabajo empleo la edición de La Araucana hecha por Isaísas Lerner, publicada en Madrid por la editorial Cátedra en 1999. Gordon, Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological lmagination "I don't know. I see things and people where you may not see anything." —The character Juan Preciado in Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo During my college years, Pedro Páramo was the first Spanish-language novel that fully captured my attention. It haunted my thinking, a reaction comparable in intensity to my discovery of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights as an adolescent reader. Only partially grasping the nuances of words and styles in a language I was still learning, I became obsessed with understanding Pedro Páramo. It fascinated me to the extent that I decided to become a scholar of Latin American literature. Decades later, after analyzing it for graduate seminars, discussing it in conference papers, and teaching it to generations of students, the novel still holds that same hallucinatory power for me. The powerful effect of Pedro Páramo has its source in the use of enigmas that involve readers in the process of understanding the complex relationship between past and present in early twentieth-century Mexico. The novel transports readers to a ghost town on the desert plains in Mexico, and there it weaves together tales of passion, loss, and revenge. The village of Comala is populated by the wandering souls of former inhabitants, individuals not yet pure enough to enter heaven. Like the character Juan Preciado, who travels to Comala and suddenly finds himself confused, as readers we are not sure about what we see, hear, or understand.

Lopez Contreras tuvo la inmensa virtud, por su carActer y por su manera de entender el momento historico, de evitar eso, de no permitir la ruptura, de mantener las instituciones y de iniciar una transformacion muy seria, muy solida y muy sincera, de un monumento de gobierno personalista hacia una democracia.

La Numancia es la tragedia que escribió Cervantes alrededor de 1582. En ella se recupera la historia de la resistencia del pueblo celtíbero al Imperio Romano. Lo que no deseaban los numantinos era el sometimiento de su pueblo, por ello es que deciden suicidarse ante que rendirse al Imperio. En la primera jornada aparece la figura alegórica de España que dice: “Numancia es la que agora sola ha sido/ quien la luciente espada sacó fuera,/ y a costa de su sangre ha mantenido/ la amada libertad suya y primera”. Son constantes las alusiones a la libertad en la tragedia. El siguiente trabajo realiza un acercamiento a la obra, para ello se hace referencia al contexto de producción y al que se desarrolla en el texto. Se mencionan las fuentes utilizadas por el autor, para pasar finalmente a un análisis de la obra.
