  • F3.1E Temperate and Submediterranean Thorn Scrub
European Red List of Habitats - Heathland Habitat Group F3.1e Temperate and submediterranean thorn scrub Summary This habitat comprises inland scrub dominated by thorny shrubs and small trees occurring throughout the temperate and submediterranean lowlands and foothills of Europe, more locally in dry and rocky mountain localities. It is found mostly on dry to mesic, well-drained, relatively base-rich and poor to moderately nutrient-rich soils and is generally a secondary vegetation type, a replacement for or successional stage on the way to mesic broadleaved forests. Typical of forest edges and clearings, abandoned pastures and more or less permanent features like hedgerows, it provides food and shelter for invertebrates, small mammals and birds. Increasing in many places as a result of abandonment of traditional land use, it is itself seen as a threat to species-rich grasslands and progresses, without interruption, to forest. Synthesis The quantitative data lead to the overall conclusion of Least Concern (LC) for the EU28 and the EU28+, for the criteria relating to trends in quality and trends in quantity, even though there is an overal negative trend in quality in most of the countries. In the north-west of the range the habitat is more threatened than in the more continental and submediterranean regions. Overall Category & Criteria EU 28 EU 28+ Red List Category Red List Criteria Red List Category Red List Criteria Least Concern - Least Concern - Sub-habitat types that may require further examination For Northwestern Europe a semi-natural subhabitat 'hedge rows' may be distinguished and assessed separately, as the data shows that the thorn scrub is much more threatened in this Atlantic part of Europe than elsewhere.

As these were more or less just occasional observations we estimate that the Lepidoptera fauna is presented here with more than 1.500 Species. Already this number indicates the importance of Kozjanski Park for the protection of rare and protected species, although their scope is relatively small protected area of 260 km2, but very important and rich on the biodiversity. The area is a kind of refugee for many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Park is also a part of Unesco Biosphere Areas (Kozjansko and Obsotelje). As many butterflies and moths species are strictly seasonal and prefer only a particular set of habitats, they are good indicators in terms of anthropogenic disturbance and habitat quality.

  • Biological Surveys at Hunsbury Hill Country Park 2018
FRIENDS OF WEST HUNSBURY PARKS BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AT HUNSBURY HILL COUNTRY PARK 2018 Ryan Clark Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre April 2019 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre Introduction Biological records tell us which species are present on sites and are essential in informing the conservation and management of wildlife. In 2018, the Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre ran a number of events to encourage biological recording at Hunsbury Hill Fort as part of the Friends of West Hunsbury Park’s project, which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Hunsbury Hill Country Park is designated as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS). There are approximately 700 Local Wildlife Sites in Northamptonshire. Local Wildlife Sites create a network of areas, which are important as refuges for wildlife or wildlife corridors. Hunsbury Hill Country Park was designated as a LWS in 1992 for its woodland flora and the variety of habitats that the site possesses. The site also has a Local Geological Site (LGS) which highlights the importance of this site for its geology as well as biodiversity. This will be surveyed by the local geological group in due course. Hunsbury Hill Country Park Local Wildlife Site Boundary 1 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre (NBRC) supports the recording, curation and sharing of quality verified environmental information for sound decision-making. We hold nearly a million biological records covering a variety of different species groups. Before the start of this project, we looked to see which species had been recorded at the site. We were surprised to find that the only records we have for the site have come from Local Wildlife Site Surveys, which assess the quality of the site and focus on vascular plants, with some casual observations of other species noted too.

Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 37–52, 2021, Zagreb. From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, 1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biok- ovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previ- ous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list. • Bugs & Beasties of the Western Rhodopes
Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’.

A total of 173 species is reported here, comprising 97 Crambidae and 76 Pyralidae. Based upon published data, 29 species appear to be new to the fauna of Serbia, 5 species are new to the fauna of Macedonia and 37 are new to the fauna of Albania. The data are discussed. (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) Ignác Richter Abstract. Present article brings information about new findings of case–bearing moths (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) from the Balkan Peninsula. Several species of the genus Coleophora were recorded for the first time for some of the Balkan countries. Coleophora herniariae, C. daglarica and C. albipennella are recorded as new for the fauna of Europe. The description Coleophora vardarella Richter, sp. nov., from Macedonia is given. Keywords. The family Coleophoridae Bruand, 1850 belongs to the less known moths of the Balkans, therefore our focus has been oriented towards this large Lepidoptera family. Faunistic and systematic studies of this moth group in the Balkans resulted in interesting findings. One of the most important recent works about the genera Coleophora Hübner, 1822 and Goniodoma Zeller, 1849 of the Balkan Peninsula is the contribution of Richter & Pastorális (2015). Results of surveys conducted by seni- or author, executed in the years 2010–2014 at different sites of Croatia, Montene- gro, Macedonia, and Bulgaria were presented.
