THE NEGOTIATED AUTHORITY OF EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY NEW ENGLAND CLERGY Despite the growing population in the colonies throughout the eighteenth century, decreasing numbers of men chose to train for the ministry. New England Congregational clergy not only declined in number; the status, authority and influence enjoyed by their seventeenth-century forbears had drastically declined as well. Early in the century, ministerial authority was bolstered by the clergy’s educational and financial superiority, a virtual monopoly over religious sacraments and the force of localism in small covenanted communities. But the social impact of explosive population growth, a series of currency crises, and warfare throughout the eighteenth century eroded conditions supporting ministerial hegemony. In the midst of these social and economic changes, clergy faced the temptation to prostitute their ministries for the security of their positions. The loss of educational and financial superiority, their monopoly on the sacraments, and the conforming force of localism, drove eighteenth-century clergy to negotiate for more control over their own futures. Late in the century, Congregational clergy largely managed to escape the confines of a life-long tenure with one congregation, but their newfound freedom did not restore their declining prestige and authority; rather the weakened lay-clerical bond accelerated the decline of the office of the ministry. Ultimately, ministerial authority was a negotiated process between clergy and congregations throughout the colonial period. In spite of the overall decline of clerical status, the theme of negotiation remained constant as the social and economic developments altered the degree of leverage and type of negotiation each could utilize. New England clergy not only declined in number; the status, authority and influence enjoyed by their seventeenth- century forbears had drastically declined as well. Historians of the colonial period have not missed this phenomenon and have offered various interpretations of this deterioration of ministerial authority. The first announced the Messiah from afar, the second showed him present in the world, the third bore him in her womb. This Advent I have thought to entrust ourselves entirely to the Mother of Jesus. No one, better than she can prepare us to celebrate the birth of our Redeemer. She didn’t celebrate Advent, she lived it in her flesh. Like every mother bearing a child she knows what it means be waiting for somebody and can help us in approaching Christmas with an expectant faith. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth she welcomed Mary with great joy and praised her for her faith saying, “Blessed is she who believed there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). The wonderful thing that took place in Nazareth after the angel’s greeting was that Mary “believed,” and thus she became the “mother of the Lord.” There is no doubt that the word “believed” refers to Mary’s answer to the angel: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Lk 1:38).

    ABSTRACT PREACHER-AS-WITNESS: THE HOMILETICAL APPROACH OF E. STANLEY JONES by Luke Molberg Pederson Witness is a key metaphor that addresses postmodern yearning for authenticity and integrity in preaching in the current cultural milieu of the United States and Canada. The speaking and writing of twentieth-century world missionary and evangelist E. Stanley Jones provided a bountiful source of autobiographical material through which to explore Jones’ self- understanding as preacher-as-witness. The purpose of the study was to describe Jones’ homiletical self-understanding as witness to Jesus Christ, analyze the content of his speaking and writing as it pertains to preaching, and outline his sermonic approach. Jones’ underlying homiletical worldview was probed in its natural context through a grounded theory process of simultaneous data collection, analysis, and synthesis. All of Jones’ twenty-seven published books were scrutinized as well as ten selected sermons in print and in audio and videotape formats spanning sixty years of Jones’ preaching ministry. Samples of my own preaching were appended as examples of the integration of Jones’ approach with postmodern praxis. The focus of the study was not on others’ assessment of Jones, or critical evaluation of his preaching, but on his self- understanding as witness to Jesus Christ as a means to inform the present opportunity for preaching in a postmodern context. The study clarified boundaries between the metaphors of testimony, confession, and witness, offered an extension of Thomas G. Long’s work on the witness of preaching as an underappreciated metaphor for preaching, and presented witness as a theoretical bridge between speaker-driven and audience-driven polarities in preaching.

    Introduction: Conversion and Revolution in New England Throughout the Fall of 1765, Stephen Johnson, the pastor of the church in Lyme, Connecticut, excoriated Britain’s Parliament for the Stamp Act and recent trade regulations. Such “evils” imposed on “two millions of free people,” he warned in a series of newspaper editorials, threatened to “destroy the good affections and confidence” between Parliament, King, and America.1 In December, he preached a fast-day sermon (an occasion called by the colony for corporate lamentation) that elucidated the meaning of disrupted “affections.” The “present crisis,” he admitted, was “perplexing and exercising” because it compelled American colonists to make a choice between loyalty to Britain and their “great, provincial, continental, or national purposes.” He put it boldly: “if there be left to the colonies but this single, this dreadful alternative,--slavery or independency,--they will not want time to deliberate which to choose.” Johnson reiterated the need for moral deliberation. As he argued in his newspaper pieces, the “liberty of free inquiry is one of the first and most fundamental [liberties] of a free people.” New Englanders ought to be prepared to determine their political allegiances. Johnson repeated his provocation as a simple question: “what shall we do?”2 This question implied more than the possibility of resistance to parliamentary regulation. It hinted at independence from the British empire. Johnson asked his parishioners, the people of Connecticut, and all Americans to imagine a complete transformation of political loyalties, a renunciation of their status as subjects of the English monarchy. He contended that they had the moral capacity to change their allegiances.
