For more information on the hosting place: http://www.csslegambiente.org/ LOCATION The Centre is located in the heart of Maremma, in Tuscany region, a place famous for his environmental heritage: Roselle's archaeological site, Uccellina Natural Park, Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano’s Etrurian evidences, Faunal Reserve of Amiata Mountain. The National Centre “Il Girasole” has been working for a long time in the field of sustainable tourism, ecological activities, seminars, meetings and training courses. It is a concrete example of eco-friendly development, with a strong educational value, capable to combine the value of the natural and cultural heritage with the innovation and new environmental technologies. Waste water treatment (phito-purification). Water is not an unlimited resource; changes in our lifestyles led to an invaluable waste, to the pollution and depletion of underground resources and to an incredible grow of the collective prices. Today waste water treatment using plants is an environmentally friendly alternative which is also economically convenient. Basically it is a natural process to purify waste water using plants as biological filters because they're able to reduce the polluting substances contained in the water. The Centre is provided with a waste water treatment plant which was designed on the basis of its own needs: it allows a re-use of waste water for the irrigation of gardens and fields. Energy. The energy is produced by 2 photovoltaic systems; a solar thermal system with 8 panels; a small wind-power plant Heating system is provided by cork panels for thermal isolation and a radiant floor system powered by heat pump. Food. The restaurant offers a great variety of food and dishes in respect of two very important aspects. Food is not only good and tasty, because the Centre closely follows our Mediterranean cooking traditions, but it is also genuine and healthy because they always use seasonal products coming from their land. Legambiente Sustainable Development Centre chose to use raw materials that come from organic and biodynamic agriculture and breeding farms. The products are therefore healthy, with a high and genuine nutrition value. They come from small farms with many functions and they are produced with the lowest possible level of auxiliary energies (eg.: pesticides, and chemicals, etc.). HOW TO GET THERE - Rome train station and then train to Grosseto - Rome airport (Fiumicino or Ciampino) and then train to Grosseto. - Pisa airport and then train to Grosseto. - Firenze airport and then train to Grosseto We suggest choosing, if possible, a more environment friendly transport. Flying may look cheap, but the price we pay in terms of pollution is much more expensive. Here’s the Sustainable Transport Infosheet, that could help you in organizing your travel with a low environmental impact. • A Virtual Train Journey Along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome
Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus.

Thomas) ABSTRACT This thesis will delve into the unfolding of the Italian Resistance, from an underground association to a militant organization, which aided and facilitated the Allied advance to northern Italy. Particular emphasis will be placed on the actions and consequences of the Resistance in rural Tuscany and their affect on the local population. It will examine the changing views of Italian society, from the immediate post-war era and the decades that followed, with a brief examination of the cinematographic influences on the social views. It will include the debate over who deserves a commemorative monument and the divided and changed memory regarding the Resistance. Finally, the author will examine the current debate over the most appropriate way to memorialize the complicated and tumultuous struggle to free Italy over sixty years ago.
