Fédération Internationale de Volleyball [email protected] Telephone +41.21.345.3535 General Medal Match Notes This is the 229th women’s event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour, and this marks the 25th time that four different countries are represented in the semifinals. This is the fifth time this season it has happened (Myslowice, Rome, Stavanger, Moscow). In the first five years in Klagenfurt, one country had two teams on the podium, but this will mark the fifth time in the last six years that three different countries will be atop the podium. Three of the four semifinal teams have won a title this season, with only China’s Chen Xue and Xi Zhang looking for their first gold medal of the year. In fact, Brazil, The Netherlands and the United States are the only three countries to win a gold this season. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are the only one of the four teams to have won a Grand Slam this season, winning in both Beijing and Moscow. Xue and Zhang’s last Grand Slam title came in Moscow in 2010, while the 2009 Gstaad title marked the only Grand Slam victory thus far for Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes. Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel of The Netherlands have won two titles (both this season) but none in Grand Slams. This marks the 11th meeting between China and the United States for a gold medal, with the USA leading 8-2, including 4-2 in Grand Slam title matches. Bronze Medal Match - Maria Antonelli/Talita Antunes, Brazil vs.
