The US$6.83-million SWATCH FIVB World Tour is scheduled over an eight-month period starting in April in Brazil and ending in November in Thailand. The US$190,000 Sanya Open is the 14th women’s event on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar. For more information regarding the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, please visit www.fivb.org. · The Sanya Bay Resort District will be hosting a SWATCH FIVB World Tour event for the world's elite Beach Volleyball performers for the third-straight year. The first two Sanya Opens were double gender events with the 2010 edition featuring women’s-only competition. The 2009 Sanya Open finale marked the first gold medal finish by a women’s team from Switzerland as Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr upset Americans Jen Kessy and April Ross in the title match. Kessy and Ross had won the inaugural women’s Sanya Open in 2008. The first women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain. With the 14-event men’s 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour season concluding at the end of August in The Netherlands, the women’s 15-stop schedule ends with tournaments in China (Sanya, October 26-31) and Thailand (Phuket, November 2-7). The coverage covers six macro-regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and the, Middle East) with IMG the FIVB’s partner for TV distribution and production. A total of 134 “live” matches and 21 highlight programs have been and will be produced and distributed throughout the season offering increased access to each SWATCH FIVB World Tour event. The 2009 international Beach Volleyball season saw an increase in international broadcasters from 24 in 2008 to 39 in 2009 when more than 1,600 total hours of primary footage of events were broadcast around the world. A new Mikasa ball, the VLS 300, will be used after being introduced at 2009 season-ending events in Sanya and Phuket. WORLD TOUR UPDATE - With the men’s 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar concluding at the end of August in The Netherlands where an American tandem topped the podium for the 10th-time, the women’s international Beach Volleyball schedule ends with events in Asia with tournaments in China (Sanya) and Thailand (Phuket). After an eight-week layoff after concluding the European portion of the schedule in The Hague, the women’s 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour resumes play in Sanya October 26-31 followed by the season finale the next week in Phuket November 3-7. The weather-plagued The Hague event (August 24-29) was highlighted by gold medal finishes by Casey Jennings/Kevin Wong of the United States and Maria Antonelli/Talita Antunes of Brazil by defeating teams from Brazil and China, respectively, in the finales. Talita celebrated her 28th birthday as she and Antonelli captured their sixth SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal since forming their partnership at the start of the 2009 season by defeating China’s Chen Xue and Xi Zhang 21- 19 and 21-18 win in 38 minutes. After losing 19-21, 21-18 and 15-12 to Xue and Zhang earlier in the Dutch competition, Talita and Antonelli rebounded with a 24-22, 18-21 and 15-6 elimination victory in 51 minutes over compatriots Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca, the top-ranked team on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, to advance to the semi-finals where they defeated Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel of The Netherlands. With Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers winning nine of the first 13 men’s titles in 2010, Jennings and Wong joined their compatriots as gold medal winners this season by posting a 21-18, 18-21 and 17-15 win in 60 minutes over Benjamin Insfran and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil
