E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. Häuser2, Vo Dinh Ba3, Bui Dinh Duc4 1Vietnam National Museum of Nature, VAST 2Natural History Museum Berlin, Germany 3University of Science, Hue University 4Vietnam National University of Forestry SUMMARY The study on swallowtail butterflies (Papilionidae) of three protected areas of Thua Thien Hue province was carried out sometimes between April and June from 2015 to 2018, at different habitats and altitudes in Bach Ma National Park (NP), Phong Dien Nature Reserve (NR), and Sao La Nature Reserve (NR). Butterflies were observed and collected randomly by insect nets in the surveyed areas. In additional, butterfly species were also referred from previous works on butterflies in the area to make a list of Papilionidae species. The similarity of species composition between three protected areas was analyzed with Cluster Analysis by Primer V5. Total 36 species of the Papilionidae family has been recorded in three protected areas. There are 4 species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (2007): Troides helena, T. aeacus, Teinopalpus aureus, and Papilio noblei. Among them, first three species are listed in the CITES (2018). Teinopalpus aureus is in the Red List of IUCN (2018). The similarity of species composition between protected areas is rather high (67%), highest between Phong Dien NR and Sao Lao NR (69.8%). The species composition of Bach Ma NP is slightly different from Phong Dien NR and Sao La NR as Bach Ma NP has 7 species not found in two other protected areas. -

Parsons Entomology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County 900 Exposition Blvd., LosAngeles, California 90007, U.S.A.*' (Received December 13, 1995) Abstract In order to reappraise the interrelationships of genera in the tribe Troidini, and to test the resultant theory of troidine evolution against biogeographical data a cladistic analysis of troidine genera was performed. Data were obtained mainly from immature stages, providing characters that appeared to be more reliable than many "traditional" adult characters. A single cladogram hypothesising phylogenetic relation ships of the troidine genera was generated. This differs markedly from cladograms obtained in previous studies that used only adult characters. However, the cladogram appears to fit well biogeographical data for the Troidini in terms of vicariance biogcography, especially as this relates to the general hypotheses of Gondwanaland fragmentation and continental drift events advanced by recent geological studies. The genus Ornithoptera is shown to be distinct from Troides. Based on input data drawn equally from immature stages and adult characters, a single cladogram hypothesising the likely phylogeny of Ornithoptera species was generated. A fairly large skipper, Hasora mixta, was discovered on Lanyu (Orchid I.), off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Samples of this species from Lanyu were compared with those from other regions, revealing that the wing pattern and male genitalia consistently differ from those of other subspecies, and this is herein described as H. mixta limata, ssp. nov. This skipper is crepuscular or on the wing under cloudy conditions. An investigation of the immature biology of H. mixta limata revealed that it demonstrates an oviposition behavior unusual in skippers, in that it conceals its ova between leaflets of its larval host with spumaline. The papillae anales of the female genitalia are modified so that they can insert ova into tightly attached leaflets of young buds. The promotion of flagship species is one way to generate interest in invertebrate conservation. Butterflies are frequently labeled invertebrate flag- ships, but clear definitions of the conservation actions they are meant to catalyze, and empirical assessments of their popularity amongst non-Western audiences are lacking. To improve the use of invertebrate flagships, we examine how butterflies compare with other taxa in terms of popularity. We then identify characteristics of individual species that are appealing and explore whether these may be used to derive a set of guidelines for selecting invertebrate flagships. We conducted questionnaire-based surveys amongst two target audiences: rural residents (n = 255) and tourists (n = 105) in northeast India. Inverte- brates that were aesthetically appealing, or those that provided material benefits or eco- logical services were liked. Butterflies were the most popular group for both audiences, followed by dragonflies, honeybees and earthworms. The habitats are the natural forest on mountain, the secondary forest, the forest edge, shrub and grass from 1,400 to 1,700 m a.s.l. The study was carried out uncontinuously from May to September in 2008, 2010 and 2011. Total 132 species of 5 butterfly families were recorded during studied period. Two species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam and CITES are Troides aeacus and Teinopalpus imperialis. There are 33 species with individuals 1-2 (25% of all species), 44 species with individuals 3-5 (33% of all species), 14 species with individuals 6-10 (11% of all species), and 41 species with individuals more than 10 (31% of all species). Butterfly species of Dong Van karst plateau consists of 12.6% of all butterfly species of Vietnam, but the family Papilionidae of Dong Van karst plateau consists of 40% of all species of the family of Vietnam.
