2 A new group is being formed in Harborcreek called the “Harborcreek Community Engagement Team” (HC CET) that has adopted a mission statement of “Collaboration for the betterment of Harborcreek through the sharing of ideas and support of community-based activities within the Township”. A core group has begun to meet with the hopes that the Team is ready to grow membership towards the end of the year to increase community based ideas and communication.

In the Team’s first community outreach venture, the Harborcreek Community Engagement Team ran a “Pack the Bus” program to collect school supplies for students heading back to Harbor Creek and Iroquois. The HC CET would like to thank all those that generously donated to the children. The Team’s next engagement is the “Respook, Rewear, Rescare” Costume Swap where gently used Halloween Costumes can be donated for others to use this Halloween. Stay tuned for more updates from the HC CET on more community outreach programs and how you can become involved.

Harborcreek’s Literary Heritage, Part II Compiled by the Harborcreek Historical Society

Harborcreek is the hometown of an astronaut, all-star athletes, military heroes, and hard- working farming families, but that’s not all. It’s also home to several authors. Harborcreek has a strong literary heritage, and we are excited to present Part II of our series on local authors in this issue of yourHarborcreek magazine. z June Klins, who was a Math teacher by profession and is retired from the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5, has served as the editor of “The Spirit of Medjugorje” since 2002 when she took over from Joan Wieszczyk, one of the co-founders of the newsletter. The monthly newsletter is distributed to households in every state but one and 40 foreign countries, and it features information about the village of Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the sighting of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1981, interviews with those who have visited the site, and testimonies of faith. Klins has compiled three books from content originally printed in “The Spirit of Medjugorje” newsletter. The Best of The Spirit of Medjugorje: Volume I (1988-1997) was published in 2005. She published Volume II (1998-2004) in 2007, and Volume III, I Have Come to Tell the World That God Exists: The Best of “The Spirit of Medjugorje,” in 2011. Additional information on the newsletter and three books can be found at www.spiritofmedjugorje.org. z Cindy Kueczynski has been seeing spirits since she was five years old, and her experience as a medium has served as inspiration for her writing. Spirit of Salem, the author’s first book, was written in 2006. It is a fictional tale of two sisters who inherit their family estate in Salem, Massachusetts and learn of their bewitching heritage. In 2010, Kueczynski wrote The Spirits I See: The Discovery of a Medium ,through which she talks about her discovery of her “gifts” and seeks to help others come to terms with their own. Her most recent book, Witches of Salem: The Inheritance, is the first in a fiction series based on Spirits of Salem. Witches of Salem: The Veil is due to be published soon. Three years after moving to Harborcreek in 1995, Kueczynski started Eye of the Moon, a retail venture that caters to Wiccan, Pagan, Celtic Druid, and Gothic clientele and offers jewelry, clothing, candles, and other specialty items. Eye of the Moon is an online store that can be found at https://www.facebook.com/flyinforaspell/ z

Rob Stroup, a 1994 graduate of Harbor Creek High School, earned a degree in Applied Mathematics from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York in 1998. Presently, he is the Quality Assurance Analyst for the nonprofit health plan Independent Health in Buffalo. Stroup became an author in 2017, two years after the death of his beloved friend and confidant – a boxer by the name of Newman – when he published I Am Newman: 75 Pounds of Muscle & Gas. Humorous and heartfelt, the book recounts Newman’s life with his human family from his own perspective. As Stroup writes, “I Am Newman is a love letter to all dog lovers who’ve watched their “best friend” go from puppy to passed on.” I Am Newman was a 2018 International Book Award finalist in the Animals/Pets Narrative Non-fiction category. Stroup and his wife Laura reside in the village of Honeoye Falls, New York with their four children and new puppy Bosco. z Lyrics: You Touched My Heart is a collection of poetry written by Curtiss Young and assembled by his parents Ruth and Jim Young following the passing of their son at the age of 22. Written over a two-year period, Young’s poems capture the powerful and raw emotions that he experienced and that resonate with readers everywhere.

12 As written by those who knew and loved him, “This was a talented young writer, with an intelligent and sometimes unexpected sense of humor, with a deep sensitivity to life’s ironies, to the evil that people can create and the pain that they endure.” A copy of Young’s book is located in the research and reading room of the Harborcreek Historical Society. Young was a 1973 graduate of Harbor Creek High School. z

The following segment about Behrend professor Benjamin Lane was included in Part I of this series, which appeared in the Summer 2018 issue of yourHarborcreek magazine. Due to an error in the content, the write-up is reprinted here in its entirety. Benjamin Lane, who joined the Harborcreek Historical Society’s board of directors in 1995, was a professor of English and German at Penn State Behrend. After serving in the U.S. Army, Lane attended Penn State University Park on the G.I. Bill, and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English. He joined the faculty at Penn State Behrend in 1953 and taught for 32 years. During his tenure at the college, Lane and his family lived in a home on Jordan Road and had the opportunity to watch the campus grow around them. In 1995, thirteen years after his retirement from the college, Lane wrote the book Behrend Remembered: A Half Century of Penn State in Erie, an informal history of the Penn State Behrend campus. His book is filled with personal stories and photographs that document the evolution of the college to a four-year, degree-granting institution. Lane, who passed away July 15, 2011, is one of many past and current faculty members from Penn State Behrend to have published a book. For more information about other authors and books affiliated with the college, contact the helpful reference librarians at the John M. Lilley Library at (814) 898-6058. z

Be sure to look for Harborcreek’s Literary Heritage, Part III in the next issue of yourHarborcreek. We continue to thank all of the people who responded to our requests that appeared in yourHarborcreek and the Society’s newsletter “The Harbor View” for local authors’ names and information.

The Harborcreek Historical Society’s Gifford-Blanch- field House is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Sat- urday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, and Thursday 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. For additional information, contact us at (814) 899-4447 or [email protected], or visit our website at www.harborcreekhistory.org
