11 Volunteer Fire Departments Harborcreek Fire Department – Weathering the Storm

On Sunday, November 5th at approximately 6:40 PM, a tornado warning was issued, sending alerts over the television, radio, and smart phones across Erie County. The National Weather Services confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down near Amherst Rd. and traveled 2.5 miles to W 32nd St. and Greengarden Blvd. The initial reports indicated that Harborcreek Township was in the path of this storm. This was one of 14 tornados produced across Ohio and Pennsylvania with this storm system. Fortunately, Harborcreek Township was spared from the damage of the tornado, however, we were not spared from the 3 inches of rain that fell during the storm. This storm resulted in flooded roadways and basements, downed trees and power lines, and power outages. During the storm, East County Emergency Communication Center triaged and dispatched 60 calls during the storm and answered a total of 248 phone calls from the municipalities of Harborcreek, North East, Wesleyville and Lawrence Park. The Harborcreek Fire Department responded to twelve official calls during the storm with the assistance of Brookside and Fairfield Fire Departments and Harborcreek Township and investigated may reports of flooded roadways and trees down. Unfortunately, this storm is an example of how quickly resources can become depleted and calls end up being prioritized based on imminent threat to life. This resulted in some calls being held for 1-2 hours before freeing up manpower and equipment to respond. Because of this, we are asking the members of the community to actively prepare for severe weather events and stay home during these events. During the storm, HCFD was dispatched for two separate water rescues. Brookside assisted with a call in front of Walmart while we were on an ambulance call and HCFD handled another water rescue at the railroad underpass at Iroquois and Buffalo Rd. Both calls involved standing water in the roadway and vehicles attempting to drive through the high water, disabling the vehicles. There is a saying for these situations: “Turn around.. don’t drown!” Although this saying is geared towards moving water, it applies to all high-water situations. Your best option is to not drive through high water, find another route or find a dry place and just wait it out. Many high-water situations in Harborcreek Township are temporary due to storm water runoff and will dissipate rather quickly. It simply is not worth the risk to drive through the flood water. It also puts the responders at risk who must enter the flood waters to assist the individuals trapped in the disabled vehicles. Be prepared, make a plan, and stay informed! Preparedness refers to maintain a cache of supplies. It is always recommended to keep a supply of water and non-perishable food on hand. The rule of thumb is to be self-sustainable for 72 hours. This should include medications, medical oxygen, fuel for generators, etc. During the winter months, homeowners should use caution when looking at alternative heating sources while being cautious about producing carbon monoxide. Make and communicate a plan. Ensure your family knows how to respond to emergencies at your home. What location will you use to shelter in place and does everyone know where it is. Also ensure that you have a list of emergency contacts for your family. Also ensure that each member of your family has a document containing medical history, medications, and allergies. Situation awareness is critical to a successful outcome during any emergency. Ensure that you have access to cell phones with the ability to charge them, radios with extra batteries and watch local news, if available to receive emergency alerts as they are activated and monitor the situation. 12 13 Brookside Fire Department Grateful for Congratulations to the following members Mutual Aid Generosity of Fairfield Hose Company who were recently elected as 2017 - 2018 Hose In August of this year, Brookside Fire Company’s ambulance, 247, suffered some mechanical issues that required it to be out of service Company Officers for the entire month. The Maltese Cross is a firefighters badge of honor, a symbol of protection and courage. It’s history is hundreds of years old. A group of crusaders, the Knights of St. John, were fighting for possession of Kuhl Hose 697 became part of the Station 24 Fleet for a brief time the Holy Land. During the battle the Knights had bottles of flammable this summer. The members of Station 24 with to thank Kuhl Hose liquid thrown at them followed by flaming torches. Hundreds burned Fire Company for their generosity. to death while others rised their lives trying to save them. These men became the first firefighters. They were presented with badges similar to the cross we wear today. Since the Knights of St John lived on the island of Malta this cross became known as the Maltese Cross. It means that those who wear it are willing to risk their life for the protection of others. For men and women in the fire service (paid and volunteer) wearing a maltese cross is a way to honor the history of firefighting and show pride in our department.

13 Volunteer Fire Departments Carbon Monoxide: A Hidden Danger Carbon Monoxide, or CO, is a tasteless, odorless, invisible, poisonous gas that kills more than 400 US residents annually. It is created by the incomplete burning of fuels, including gasoline and natural gas, wood, coal, propane, and oil. If you have 1 gas appliance, a propane grill, or a vehicle in or around your home, you are at risk for Carbon Monoxide exposure. Carbon Monoxide is undetectable without specialized equipment, causing it to be referred to as “the silent killer”.

Signs of Carbon Monoxide poisoning or illness include dizziness, headache, and flu-like symptoms in mild exposures to extreme sleepiness, confusion, and convulsions in more severe exposures. You can protect yourself and your loved ones from Carbon Monoxide by following a few simple tips: 1. Purchase and install Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home. Do not rely on smoke detectors to protect you as Smoke detectors will only alert in the presence of smoke, not Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide detectors should be in stalled outside of every sleeping area and on every level of your home. A CHANGE OF HANDS 2. When purchasing a Carbon Monoxide detector, if you purchase one that plugs into an outlet, make sure it has a battery backup that will provide you protection during a power outage. THRIFT STORE 3. Be sure to install Carbon Monoxide Detectors at least 15 feet from any fuel-burning appliance such as stove, washer, dryer, 5681 East Lake Road furnace, fireplace, hot water tank, or grill. 4. Test your CO alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning 899-1330 properly. Replace CO alarms when the “end life” indicator chirps or by the manufacturer’s recommended date. NEW & USED MERCHANDISE 5. Learn the difference in the sounds of the alarm. Many alarms HOUSEHOLDS • ANTIQUES • COLLECTIBLES will “Beep or chirp” for low battery indications, but will have a Open: Mon - Fri 10 - 6pm, Sat 10-4pm, Sun Closed more steady “alarm” in the presence of Carbon Monoxide. 6. Have all heating systems, vents, chimneys, flues, inspected annually by a qualified technician. 7. Never leave your car idling in the garage. 8. During and after a snowfall, make sure all dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace vents are clear of snow build up. If your Carbon Monoxide detector alarms, indicating the presence of Carbon Monoxide, immediately move to fresh air and call 911 from a safe location. No one should return into the home until Emergency Personnel and/or the Gas Company says that is it safe to do so. Carbon Monoxide is present year round, but the fire services tend to receive more calls in the cooler months because of the use of furnaces and other heat sources and because homes tend to be closed up. However, please be aware that Carbon Monoxide can become a problem at any time. Ensure your family’s safety by installing Carbon Monoxide detectors and checking them regularly.
