WHAT WE CAN DO IN THE STRUGGLE FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE INTRODUCTION The term reproductive justice was introduced in the 1990s by a group of American Women of Color,1 who had attended the 1994 Inter- national Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which was sponsored by the United Nations and is known as “the Cairo conference.” 2 After listening to debates by representatives of the gov- ernments of UN nation states about how to slow population growth and encourage the use of contraceptives and the extent to which women’s reproductive rights could/should be guaranteed, the group realized, as Loretta Ross later wrote, that “[o]ur ability to control what happens to our bodies is constantly challenged by poverty, racism, en- vironmental degradation, sexism, homophobia, and injustice . -

Finally Become Global Or Just Another Product of Neoliberal Feminism?
#MeToo – Has the ‘sisterhood’ finally become global or just another product of neoliberal feminism? Farnush Ghadery [email protected] LSS, Law School London South Bank University Abstract: The article discusses the #MeToo movement by reflecting on its origins and recent developments to consider its position within feminist theory. On the one hand, the cross- border proliferation of this hashtag revived the question once posed by liberal feminist Robin Morgan: Has the ‘sisterhood’ finally become global? Others questioned the deeper meaning of the ‘me’ as part of #MeToo, wondering whether the need for individual responsibility to come forward indicates that the movement fits only too well with what has been coined neoliberal feminism. Disagreeing with both categorisations, the article positions #MeToo as a transnational feminist consciousness-raising endeavour which can be traced across different places worldwide. Referring to some of these contextualised uses of #MeToo, the article argues that #MeToo has been able to manifest itself as a transnational feminist phenomenon, as it has allowed groups in distinct spaces and localities to take ownership of the varying manifestations of #MeToo. Introduction It is now a year and a half ago that the revelation of sexual violence and harassment amongst the bold and the beautiful in Hollywood1 led to the hashtag ‘MeToo’ going viral. This event permitted the laywoman and layman to share their own story of sexual violence or to ‘just’ express that they, too, have been subjected to forms of sexual abuse by tweeting or sharing on Facebook, Instagram and other forms of social media the now famous expression of #MeToo. -

Routledge, 2013 Check with the original to verify italics Third world, transnational, and global feminisms focus on the situation of racial-ethnic women originating from the third world (or the South), whether or not they reside in the first world (or the North or West). This entry refers to these women as ―third world women.‖ Most second- wave white feminisms in the West—liberal, radical, psychoanalytic, or ―care-focused‖ feminisms (Tong 2009)—have assumed that women everywhere face similar oppression merely by virtue of their sex/gender. Global feminism as it first emerged in the 1980s was largely a global application of this white feminist outlook. Third world and transnational feminisms emerged in the 1980s and early 1990s to challenge this white feminist assumption. These feminisms are predicated on the premise that women‘s oppression diverges globally due to not only gender, but also race, class, ethnicity, religion, and nation. Therefore, third world women suffer from multiple forms of oppression qualitatively different from the gender oppression experienced by middle-class white women in the West. Third world and transnational feminisms are distinct, however, not only in their origins and outlooks, but also in their goals and priorities. This entry begins by examining the genealogies of these feminisms, in the process of which their differences will be identified. It then explains four main characteristics that these feminisms share. After reviewing some instances of third world, transnational, and global feminist activities, the entry concludes by suggesting a way to resolve a potential conflict between the local and the universal facing third world, transnational, and global feminists. -
Post-Postfeminism?: New Feminist Visibilities in Postfeminist Times
FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. TITLE OF COURSE AND COURSE NUMBER: Global Perspectives on Women's Lives WS 420 3 Credits DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: This course addresses the social, sexual-reproductive, economic, political, and cultural dimensions of women's lives from a global perspective. We scrutinize the status of women and girls, identifying the consequences of globalization for life in societies, in communities and of individuals. Our critical feminist standpoint encompasses three interconnected stages: description of conditions and theoretical framing of issues; development of visions of social justice leading to liberaiton from oppression; and planning and engagement in action necessary to create such social and personal change. Here, we are particularly interested in finding ways to connect activism at the local level to activism at the national and global levels. COURSE CONTENT: Overview of the general geographical and geopolitical characteristics of nations in the five continents: America, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Europe. 1. The historical expansion of the patriarichal capitalist system and the connection to Western colonization of nations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Overview of this global economic and political history and trends in the 20th Century, including: a. Modernity and the creation and demise of centrally planned socialist states in the Soviet Union, China, Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Chile, Grenada and Nicaragua; the capitalist wars against national liberation struggles and the role of women in them, for example, in Nicaragua, Chile and Argentina. b. Dependent capitalist development efforts in the Third World, after WWII' s the economic boom, including manufacturing for internal consumption and for export, and agricultural development; gender, class and race/ethnicity related effects of development on women and families. -

Sano, Advisor ABSTRACT HER MONEY, MY SWEAT: WOMEN ORGANIZING TO TRANSFORM GLOBALIZATION Emily Bates Brown Women who live in Third World nations are disproportionately negatively affected by globalization. Moreover, theorizations of Third World women’s economic hardships are often characterized in terms of their victimization and helplessness even within Western feminist literature. Such characterizations have been intensely criticized in the last two decades by Third World and postcolonial feminist theorists who have effectively exposed the dangers of representing Third World women as a homogenized group. Western feminist discourse on gender, globalization, and Third World cultures has since made inroads toward addressing the specificity of identity issues such as race, class, and nationality, and in bridging the gap between the objectives of Western and non-Western women’s groups. Within discussions of the inequities of globalization and in efforts to organize women around globalization issues, negotiating similar identity issues and goals is a constant challenge. With an emphasis on the intersection of theory and practice, this thesis argues that for transnational feminist networks to organize constructively on globalization issues in the Third World, the agency and experience of local actors must be regarded as a primary source of legitimate knowledge. Only in this way will transnational feminist networks, which operate across both geographical and intangible borders, be successful in empowering local actors and in producing more viable, counter-hegemonic economic opportunities than currently exist under processes of globalization. -

THE DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN AND GENDER STUDIES PRESENTS Dr. Chandra Talpade Mohanty Greater Philadelphia Women’s Studies Consortium Scholar in Residence “Wars, Walls, Borders: Anatomies of Violence and Transnational Feminist Critique” Wednesday, April 6, 2016 5:00-6:00 pm Gore Recital Hall in Roselle Center for the Arts Reception to follow Dr. Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Distinguished Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University, offers a postcolonial, anti-imperialist feminist critique that connects struggles for liberation across different geographies and develops a vision for transnational feminist praxis and solidarity work. Dr. Mohanty examines three securitized regimes—the US, Israel, and India—and three specific geopolitical sites—US/Mexico, Israel/ Palestine and India/Kashmir—as zones of normalized violence. Dr. Mohanty argues that at these sites, neoliberal and militarized state and imperial practices are often sustained by development/peace-keeping/humanitarian projects, thus illuminating the new contours of securitized states that function as imperial democracies. Dr. Chandra Talpade Mohanty is Distinguished Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University. Her work focuses on transnational feminist theory, anti-capitalist feminist praxis, anti-racist education, and the politics of knowledge. She is author of Feminism Without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity and co-editor of Third World Women and the Politics of Feminism, Feminist Genealogies, Colonial Legacies, Democratic Futures, Feminism and War: Confronting U.S. Imperialism, and The Sage Handbook on Identities (Sage Publications, 2010). I am their first daughter and they wanted me to study … When I knew what was going on, you know, what could I do? I knew what they wanted me for in just a few hours after I arrived here and I was trapped. How could I escape, with no money, no car, no airplane ticket? … I didn’t even speak the language! Oh! It was impossible! … I still write my family, I have since I have been here. At first I told them that my life is fine here, I was working and studying.
