We were there to participate in the Grand Rapids-Spring lake Yacht Clubs inter club regatta. He was promoting sailing and establishing friendships as a teenager, and he never stopped doing it during his whole life. We competed head to head for several years, tough competition on the water, but always a renewal of the friendship after the race. # THE WORLD LEADER IN PERFORMANCE ONE DESIGN RACING # # MELGES.COM # # MELGES.COM MELGES BOAT WORKS, INC. was founded by Harry C. Melges, Sr. in 1945. Melges became an instant leader in scow boat design, production and delivery in the U.S., particularly in the Midwest. Harry, Sr. initially built boats out of wood. The first boats produced were flat-bottomed row boats, which provided a core business to keep his vision and the company alive. It wasn't long before he branched into race boat production delivering the best hulls, sails, spars, covers and accessories ensuring his customers stayed on the competitive cutting-edge. Melges (pronounced mel•gis), is one of the most reputable, recognized and respected family names in the sailing industry. The devotion, generosity, perseverance and passion that surrounds the name is undeniable. It will forever be a legendary symbol of quality, excellence and experience that is second-to-none. Early on Harry Sr.’s son, Harry “Buddy” Melges, Jr. was involved in operating the family boat building business. Over time, Buddy established an impressive collection of championship titles and Olympic medals. During the 1964 Olympics, Buddy was awarded a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman and in 1968 won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. In 1972, he won a gold medal in the Soling in Kiel, Germany — the Soling’s official debut in Olympic competition. In the years that followed, Buddy won over 60 major national and international sailing championship titles. They include the Star in 1978 and 1979; 5.5 Metre in 1967, 1973 and 1983; International 50 Foot World Cup in 1989; Maxi in 1991 and the National E Scows in 1965, 1969, 1978, 1979 and 1983.

  • It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, That Lon Schoor Invited 130 E-Boats to Come Play…
It was Twenty Years ago today, That Lon Schoor invited 130 E-Boats to come play…. By Don Sanford and Steve Holtzman It’s the summer of 1997. The camera pans across a lonely stretch of America’s vast interstate highway system somewhere on the endless prairies of Minnesota or Wisconsin. It zooms in on a late-model SUV towing a trailer with a curious object stealthily wrapped in canvas. Above the relentless drone of eight Michelin radials spinning across 12 inches of reinforced concrete we begin to make out the conversation. “If those guys could get eighty boats at their regatta, it’ll be a snap for us to get 100 boats on Mendota…” In the fading daylight, the camera pans to the front seat where we discover a pair of smart talking sailors, Lon Schoor and Hugh Sugar. They didn’t know it then but they were on their way to a wondrous destination. Not a dimension of time or of mind but a fabulous world of fiberglass, water and Dacron. Look, there’s a signpost up ahead! Your next stop-- Lake Mendota and the largest one-design regatta in history... Theme music fades up…. Lon and Hugh were headed home after sailing in the biggest E Nationals ever where 80 boats filled the starting line and the parties were great. The more they talked, the more they were convinced that 100 boats would come to a regatta on Lake Mendota. Everyone knows that Mendota is one of the best lakes for E-boating in the nation and that Madison is a great town.

  • 2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey
2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey [email protected] One Design Classes and Sailor Survey One Design sailing is a critical and fundamental part of our sport. In late October 2019, US Sailing put together a survey for One Design class associations and sailors to see how we can better serve this important constituency. The survey was sent via email, as a link placed on our website and through other USSA Social media channels. The survey was sent to our US Sailing members, class associations and organizations, and made available to any constituent that noted One-Design sailing in their profile. Some interesting observations: • Answers are based on respondents’ perception of or actual experience with US Sailing. • 623 unique comments were received from survey respondents and grouped into “Response Types” for sorting purposes • When reviewing data, please note that “OTHER” Comments are as equally important as those called out in a specific area, like Insurance, Administration, etc. • The majority of respondents are currently or have been members of US Sailing for more than 5 years, and many sail in multiple One-Design classes • About 1/5 of the OD respondents serve(d) as an officer of their primary OD class; 80% were owner/drivers of their primary OD class; and more than 60% were members of their primary OD class association. • Respondents to the survey were most highly concentrated on the East and West coasts, followed by the Mid- West and Texas – though we did have representation from 42 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. • Most respondents were male.

Somehow it seems like September has been hotter than August. We have the Tulsa Cat Fight this weekend, there should be a few dozen Hobies racing. Come out and spectate, official regatta ceremonies are at Washington Irving South. The MC Southwest Regional Championship and steak dinner is in two weeks pre register @ mcscow.org to sail or RSVP on our website for dinner. The Windycup and Club Meeting BBQ is a month away. The Sail for Steve regatta was a great success! Everything came together for a perfect afternoon of sailing. We did not reach Steve’s hopes of having 50 boats out, there was close to 40. A superb team made it possible for Steve to ride on the committee boat during the regatta, Steve was extremely happy about getting on the water! I am certain we can get 60 boats out there next year! Thank You to Paul Foerster, all the Sailors, Volunteers and Donors for making this event come together and raise over $10k for APSO. We have plenty of nice sailing days left until old man winter comes down, don’t sleep on it. Cheers! Drew Ziegler Charity Regatta Review The 2018 “Sail for Steve” Charity Regatta is history and again was a booming success.

INSIDE: • Keowee Cup Recap and results • Flag Day Raftup • Membership News May, 2015 KEOWEE SAILING CLUB The Memorial Day Party Saturday May 23rd Dinner at 6:30 Please bring an hors d’oeuvre or dessert to share. There will be a sign up sheet at the club or you can email me, Robyn Strickland at [email protected]. 1 Keowee Cup by Chris Zander This year’s running of the annual Keowee Cup was in my humble opinion a huge success. We had a great turnout of racers for both the recreational fleets (see next page) and the bouys course. I was PRO for the bouys course and my attention was focused there; however, I was amazed as the parade of racers left the docks and beaches for the starting line of their choice. Rob Kaiser managed the distance course, and with Judge Edith on board, the fleets were in very capable hands. They even managed to work around marks I audaciously set near their starting area. I can’t tell you what a blessing it is to have Edith in our midst, she’s a great resource and I sincerely hope she knows how much we enjoy and appreciate her presence. It is truly great to see the participation in our regular regattas and race series; the Flying Scots were out in force as usual, and it was great to see the Y-flyer and MC Scow duking it out with them. Our A fleet bouy racers really get your blood pumping too. With such fierce competition on some really impressive boats event the light conditions can make watching from the committee boat a nail biter.

  • 2019 Commodore, Western Michigan Yachting Association
2 A Message From the Commodore 90th Annual WMYA Regatta Welcome WMYA Sailors! Thank you for joining us at the White Lake Yacht Club for another great Western Michigan Yachting Association Championship Regatta. My first WMYA regatta was 22 summers ago on Torch Lake racing my E scow with Jack Rillema and Jamie Duncan. I still remember how amazing it was to see all the different classes and age groups sailing together. We would race the E and then watch the other fleets and kids race. Some sailors would even race in multiple fleets! There was great competition and new friendships in the making. Then after all that we would hang out with family and friends. I’ll never forget that first year camping with the wives and kids (thank you Karolyn and Kim) and how the SLYC camping contingent had so much fun and could stay up so late. I was hooked, what a great regatta! So let’s make some new memories this year at White Lake. Thanks to all the WMYA and WLYC volunteers that make this regatta happen. We apologize in advance for the lack of beach this year but Mother Nature wanted to test our creativity. If you need anything just ask, and we will be happy to help out. So let’s have some more fun, be safe, and enjoy this week sailing at the Westerns! Sincerely, Don Nelson 2019 Commodore, Western Michigan Yachting Association 90th Annual WMYA Regatta 3 HaveHave aa GreatGreat Regatta!Regatta! Photo Credit: Sean Fidler Robert P. Terry, D.D.S.
