ABOUT THE KCSC The Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) is first and foremost an educational collaborative effort between the Kenosha Yacht Club (KYC) and local organizations and schools. KCSC’s primary goal is to educate Kenosha youth in the sport of sailing while integrating academic, leadership, and life skills. The KCSC also promotes access to the Kenosha Harbor and the resources of Lake Michigan.

The KCSC is always looking for individuals and businesses who would like to donate boats for use in our sailing program. Unlike other community sailing centers, we do not charge our participants a hourly or daily fee for the use of boats. We’re able to do this thanks to a quality team of individuals do- nating their time and labor for the upkeep of our boats and facilities. We also gladly accept goods and services to help us keep our rates the lowest you will find anywhere.

HISTORY The KCSC was established in the spring of 2008 as a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. In the summer of 2009, the KCSC created an introductory sailing course through collaboration with KYC members and community teachers. In 2009, the KCSC also received a grant to pay for a boathouse building on the KYC dock which provides the organization a work, storage and sail loft space. This building has been instrumental in allowing for the continued growth of the organization.

NEW FOR 2013

In October of 2012, the KCSC purchased five O’pen Bics that were used during the Bic Nationals in Florida. The O’pen Bics (and five prams ) are the backbone of our early youth program. Ten continue to be our go-to boats for the next level of youth sailors. The Butterfly's are also used for our adult small classes. For our mid- dle and high school sailors, we rely upon our small fleet of 420’s and Flying Juniors.

This spring, we will be offering a , Ranger 26 and J-24 for our boat students and crewing opportunities on Thursday evening and Sunday sailing sessions. For our small boat enthusi- asts, we will be offering the use of and lessons on our newly acquired O’Day Daysailer and Chrysler Mutineer and Buccaneer. Our O’Day 23 and Hughes 38 will also be returning for another year ser- vice. 3

1968 HUGHES “MAGIC” The pride of our fleet is a 1968 Hughes , “Magic,” donated in 2009 by Earl Lourcey. We not only use Magic as our primary adult class boat, but it is also available for charter at a rate of $250 for a 3 hours sail. Hughes Boat Works was founded in Ontario in 1963 by Howard and Peter Hughes, and pro- duced 8′-16′ , and H24, H27, and H38 racing boats. Howard Hughes prided himself on the quality and craftsmanship of all the models of Hughes , which were built for style and sophis- tication, and well as speed and luxury. He coined the phrase “interiors are our thing” and also felt that safety was not something to put a price tag on. In 1991, the Hughes factory in Orangeville, On- tario was destroyed by fire. Since then, Hughes Boat Works has been out of production.

Contact [email protected] for more in- formation about chartering Magic. 4

2013: PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS TO DOCKING FACILITIES Between the KYC and the Coast Guard in Kenosha Harbor is a basin used during the summer to launch the small boats for our lessons. Two years ago, Southport Marina was replacing the docks in the marina and they donated a used dock to the KCSC. This dock is used as a tie-up for our safety boat and smaller sailboats during lessons. Our plan for the spring of 2013 is to build addi- tional docking to facilitate for safer and increased storage and reduced wear and tear on the boats. This is being made possible in large part by a $7,000 grant we received from the Kloss Founda- tion.

KIDS AND COMPETITIVE SAILING

Regatta Kids This summer we are also pleased to an- nounce that we will be going to regattas all summer long in our area. Youth interested in competitive sail- ing will need to have enrolled in a minimum of two weeks of lessons and be sailing on a competitive level for their age group (8 to 18 years of age). Regatta Kids will be also required to join the KYC at the youth level for $100.

Kenosha Sailing Team All youth in grades seven and up are welcome to join the Kenosha Sailing Team. Youth are welcome to join at anytime during the year. The sailing team is the only co-ed high school sport offered at KUSD. We sail under ISSA guidelines in the MISSA region.

Sailors sail for their high school but practice with the team at the KYC. All coaches are certified in- structors and employees of Kenosha Unified School District. Our practices are held March through November. During the summer, sailors race as individuals in area regattas but still practice and take lessons with their teammates. Practices are generally on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:30pm.

There is no fee to belong to the team, but sailors may be required to purchase some of their own personal equipment and pay the entrance fee for regattas. Since we do not have a team fee, all sail- ors on the team are required to take part in various fundraisers throughout the year. Some equip- ment and money for regatta entrance fees is available to qualified sailors.

If you or your child is interested in the Kenosha Sailing Team, please contact Coach Gerrit Tichelaar at [email protected] or 262-745-0924.

THURSDAY NIGHT RACING AND SUMMER SUNDAYS Thursday Nights are KYC racing nights with a bar-b-q on the dock. Keelboats come to the KYC dock to pick up crew members, and if you have taken a keelboat class (beginner or intermediate), you can crew. The KCSC also races their keelboats, including the 38-foot Hughes Magic, the J-24, the Ranger 26 sometimes the Rhodes 19. Buccaneers, Marauders and 470s will also race. If you are taking a small boat class, you have the op- portunity to race in one of the KCSC’s small boats. At the end of the races, the Kenosha Youth Sailing Team will be grilling hot dogs and burgers and offering other inexpensive treats as a fundraiser. Summer Sundays are for everyone, with relaxed keelboat cruising open to all KYC members and KCSC students. From 10am to 2pm, we race Buccaneers, 420s, Marauders, Flying Juniors and 470s

SAFETY & ATTIRE All students and coaches are required to wear a lifejacket (PFD). It is recommended that you bring your own personal lifejack- et, which insures your size and fit, but we do have lifejackets you can borrow. Stu- dents do not have to know how to swim. However, it is entirely possible that you will end up in the water, so you should be comfortable in deep water wearing a life- jacket. It is cool on the water, so please bring a jacket or sweatshirt. Soft-soled shoes (white soles) are required. If it’s raining but there’s no , we will sail, so bring a rain jacket. Sailing is a fun sport, but it can be dangerous if sailors behave recklessly. Disregard for sailing instructors and reckless behavior will not be tolerated. Students will not be allowed to return. Refunds will not be given to stu- dents are removed for reckless behavior.

KYC OFF-SHORE RACING

In addition to regular Thursday night buoy races and Sunday sailing/races, KYC members can be found competing in other regattas such as the Digestive Health regatta and the Buccaneer nationals run by the KYC .

Our sailors have a long tradition of success in Lake Michigan off-shore races. Similar to the famed Chi- cago-Mackinac race, the Hook is a 3-day race up Lake Michigan, around Death’s Door at the top of Door County, and down Green Bay.

KYC boats regularly compete in many other races such as the Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society’s short-handed races, the Queen’s Cup (a night race from Milwaukee across the lake,) and other local events from Racine to Waukegan.

We look forward to some of our new adult and youth sailors to continue the tradition on club boats like Magic and Ole’.
