KCSC’s primary goal is to educate Kenosha youth in the sport of sailing while integrating academic, leadership, and life skills. The KCSC also promotes access to the Kenosha Harbor and the resources of Lake Michigan. The KCSC is always looking for individuals and businesses who would like to donate boats for use in our sailing program. Unlike other community sailing centers, we do not charge our participants a hourly or daily fee for the use of boats. We’re able to do this thanks to a quality team of individuals do- nating their time and labor for the upkeep of our boats and facilities. We also gladly accept goods and services to help us keep our rates the lowest you will find anywhere. HISTORY The KCSC was established in the spring of 2008 as a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. In the summer of 2009, the KCSC created an introductory sailing course through collaboration with KYC members and community teachers. In 2009, the KCSC also received a grant to pay for a boathouse building on the KYC dock which provides the organization a work, storage and sail loft space. This building has been instrumental in allowing for the continued growth of the organization. 2 NEW FOR 2013 In October of 2012, the KCSC purchased five O’pen Bics that were used during the Bic Nationals in Florida. The O’pen Bics (and five Optimist prams ) are the backbone of our early youth program. Ten Butterfly scows continue to be our go-to boats for the next level of youth sailors. The Butterfly's are also used for our adult small boat classes. For our mid- dle and high school sailors, we rely upon our small fleet of 420’s and Flying Juniors. This spring, we will be offering a Rhodes 19, Ranger 26 and J-24 for our Keel boat students and crewing opportunities on Thursday evening and Sunday sailing sessions. For our small boat enthusi- asts, we will be offering the use of and lessons on our newly acquired O’Day Daysailer and Chrysler Mutineer and Buccaneer. Our O’Day 23 and Hughes 38 will also be returning for another year ser- vice. 3 1968 HUGHES “MAGIC” The pride of our fleet is a 1968 Hughes sailboat, “Magic,” donated in 2009 by Earl Lourcey. We not only use Magic as our primary adult class boat, but it is also available for charter at a rate of $250 for a 3 hours sail. Hughes Boat Works was founded in Ontario in 1963 by Howard and Peter Hughes, and pro- duced 8′-16′ dinghies, and H24, H27, and H38 racing boats. Howard Hughes prided himself on the quality and craftsmanship of all the models of Hughes sailboats, which were built for style and sophis- tication, and well as speed and luxury. He coined the phrase “interiors are our thing” and also felt that safety was not something to put a price tag on. In 1991, the Hughes factory in Orangeville, On- tario was destroyed by fire. Since then, Hughes Boat Works has been out of production. Contact [email protected] for more in- formation about chartering Magic. 4 5 2013: PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS TO DOCKING FACILITIES Between the KYC and the Coast Guard in Kenosha Harbor is a basin used during the summer to launch the small boats for our lessons. Two years ago, Southport Marina was replacing the docks in the marina and they donated a used dock to the KCSC. This dock is used as a tie-up for our safety boat and smaller sailboats during lessons. Our plan for the spring of 2013 is to build addi- tional docking to facilitate for safer and increased storage and reduced wear and tear on the boats. This is being made possible in large part by a $7,000 grant we received from the Kloss Founda- tion. 6 7 ABOUT THE KENOSHA YACHT CLUB The Kenosha Yacht Club (KYC) is located adjacent to the Southport Lighthouse on Simmons Island in downtown Kenosha. The KYC is a member of US Sailing, Lake Michigan Yacht Racing Association, Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation and the Regional Sailing Association. The KYC is a family oriented club, offering many activities and services for both power and sail enthusiasts. They remain active throughout the year with monthly membership meetings and social activities. PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE KCSC & KYC The KCSC is a collaborative effort with the KYC. Most of the active volunteers of the KCSC are KYC members. The KYC is a social organization with diverse members who feel passionately about pro- moting a cost-effective way to learn the sport of sailing. The KCSC is technically a joint venture with the KYC but has to maintain separate finances and oversight boards so the KCSC can legally maintain its 501(3)(c) tax status. KYC MEMBERSHIP COSTS: Family Membership: $200 per year + One Time Fee* Youth Membership: $100 per year or 20 hours of volunteer activity Social Membership: $125 per year + One Time Fee* KCSC Participation Fee: $100 per year or 20 hours of volunteer activity *New members are required to pay a one time dock maintenance fee of $100 To learn more about becoming a member of the KYC, please visit www.kenoshayachtclub.com 8 KYC RESTAURANT AND BAR The Kenosha Yacht Club houses a restaurant that is open to the public. Come enjoy great food, drinks and the best view of Kenosha’s Lake Front. The KYC Res- taurant and Bar offers lunch and dinner every day and breakfast on Sunday. You don’t have to be a member to enjoy a fresh breeze and a wonderful meal. Most of all or our social events occur right at the KYC Restau- rant and Bar so come join the fun! You will find a com- plete listing of all our planned activities on page 20. 9 ADULT SAILING PROGRAM–KEELBOATS We offer two kinds of lessons for adults: Keelboat and Small Boat. • SKEETA – Float Like a Butterfly Sting Like a Bee
SKEETA – Float like a Butterfly sting like a Bee Dynamic development of a new market Foiling dinghies have become well established in the last 15 years, since the advent of flying Moth. The foiling catamarans in the America's Cup provided additional impetus from 2013 onwards. Foiling - this unique sailing experience was previously reserved for only a few, mostly pro-sailors. Sailing skills, technical and financial requirements were high - usually too high. This situation is currently changing. Significantly and faster than generally assumed. Scow-Shape rediscovered Today the Scow shape is experiencing an unexpected comeback, not only in small boats. The hull of the SKEETA is based on the proven Australian Moth class Scow shapes. It has been optimised step by step to meet the requirements for foiling. No snapshot The SKEETA is the latest foiling dinghy of the 3rd generation, designed, built, tested and made ready for production by an Australian duo that has been designing Moths with or without foils for many years. An exchange of ideas and opinions with QUANTBOATS took place during the last years. Quite a few wishes and requirements on the part of QUANTBOATS could be taken into account. SKEETA fits perfectly with our philosophy today. Fun throughout the entire wind range Like all our boats, the SKEETA is characterized by good-natured behaviour and excellent all-round characteristics. There is no need to forego performance - on the contrary. This includes perfect foiling behaviour in the lower to medium wind range as well as comfortable, controlled and fast sailing in very light or very strong winds.

    # THE WORLD LEADER IN PERFORMANCE ONE DESIGN RACING # # MELGES.COM # # MELGES.COM MELGES BOAT WORKS, INC. was founded by Harry C. Melges, Sr. in 1945. Melges became an instant leader in scow boat design, production and delivery in the U.S., particularly in the Midwest. Harry, Sr. initially built boats out of wood. The first boats produced were flat-bottomed row boats, which provided a core business to keep his vision and the company alive. It wasn't long before he branched into race boat production delivering the best hulls, sails, spars, covers and accessories ensuring his customers stayed on the competitive cutting-edge. Melges (pronounced mel•gis), is one of the most reputable, recognized and respected family names in the sailing industry. The devotion, generosity, perseverance and passion that surrounds the name is undeniable. It will forever be a legendary symbol of quality, excellence and experience that is second-to-none. Early on Harry Sr.’s son, Harry “Buddy” Melges, Jr. was involved in operating the family boat building business. Over time, Buddy established an impressive collection of championship titles and Olympic medals. During the 1964 Olympics, Buddy was awarded a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman and in 1968 won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. In 1972, he won a gold medal in the Soling in Kiel, Germany — the Soling’s official debut in Olympic competition. In the years that followed, Buddy won over 60 major national and international sailing championship titles. They include the Star in 1978 and 1979; 5.5 Metre in 1967, 1973 and 1983; International 50 Foot World Cup in 1989; Maxi in 1991 and the National E Scows in 1965, 1969, 1978, 1979 and 1983.
