1 Keowee Cup by Chris Zander

This year’s running of the annual Keowee Cup was in my humble opinion a huge success. We had a great turnout of racers for both the recreational fleets (see next page) and the bouys course. I was PRO for the bouys course and my attention was focused there; however, I was amazed as the parade of racers left the docks and beaches for the starting line of their choice. Rob Kaiser managed the distance course, and with Judge Edith on board, the fleets were in very capable hands. They even managed to work around marks I audaciously set near their starting area. I can’t tell you what a blessing it is to have Edith in our midst, she’s a great resource and I sincerely hope she knows how much we enjoy and appreciate her presence.

It is truly great to see the participation in our regular regattas and race series; the Flying Scots were out in force as usual, and it was great to see the Y-flyer and MC duking it out with them. Our A fleet bouy racers really get your blood pumping too. With such fierce competition on some really impressive event the light conditions can make watching from the committee a nail biter.

The weather was testy to say the least. After a lengthy postponement Saturday, we were able to get the racers started and worked them hard well into the afternoon. I suspect many were more than ready for dinner and a drink or two once we released them from the course. While the wind was not always on friendly terms with us on Sunday, the sunshine and temperature were absolutely perfect.

At the awards ceremony, I had my mind on the health of a good friend and did a horrible job of thanking the people that made this regatta really work. I am going to try and correct that here. Jack and Becky Wise took care of registration; thank you both. On the water helping the bouy course were Kristen Goodman and my right hand man, David Strickland. Tony and Jessie have been a real fixture around race committee duty and they certainly showed their experience. New member Kent McKinney pulled duty both on a boat and took times and scores on the committee boat. I had a great time getting to know him; his lovely wife Suzy worked very hard with the entertainment and keeping bellys full. They are certainly a great addition to our KSC Family. Robin Strickland and Jennifer Strickland were absolutely everywhere -- committee boat, arranging dinner and lunch, making sure we all had a great time both on and off the water. 10-year-old Bedry (hope I’m spelling that right) was our signal master Sunday. Doug French managed the scoring so if you have an issue take it up with him. Seriously, he is alway willing to make sense out of those hieroglyphics and he is to be either commended or committed. Aziz helped out immensely on Saturday. Thanks to Terry Keene our race committee chair and to Sam Seacrest who is always lending a hand.

Oh, and if you enjoyed breakfast Sunday, let our Commodore Adam Robinson know. He had a whole slew of folk busily feeding us and I for one can’t thank them enough. So all in all I’d say it was another great Keowee Cup in the books. Let’s see if we can top it come Turkeyshoot time!

2 Keowee Cup – Recreational Fleet Course by Rob Kaiser

The recreational fleet consisted of nine mono-hulls ranging in size from Pat Riordan’s Hunter 30 to Christine Mercier in her O’Day 19 and three . The catamarans were given their own start sequence and the mono-hulls, while scored in their respective Blue or Green Fleets, started together.

The first race on Saturday started at the ‘north’ research buoy with the boats racing out around Island #7 and back to a finish at the ‘north’ research buoy. The three catamarans got off first in a light, but fading, northerly breeze followed by the mono- hulls in the second starting sequence 7 minutes later. When the boats were about halfway up the first leg of the course to Island #7 the wind died down to almost nothing. After about twenty minutes, the wind shifted into the west and filled in allowing all boats to complete their race in a lovely 6 to 7 knot breeze. Adam Robinson crossed first in the fleet and Bill Hurni was first in the mono-hulls in his Capri 26.

The second race on Sunday again started at the ‘north’ research buoy with the fleet set to go out around Island #5, back to the ‘north’ research buoy, back around Island #5 and finishing at the ‘north’ research buoy. Both Fleets started in a very light and patchy northerly. When the wind did not fill in as predicted the race was shortened after one lap around Island #5. Once again Adam Robinson was first to finish in the catamaran fleet and Bill Hurni was first to finish in his Capri 26.

5 Proposed Flag Day Raft Up WHAT’S COMING UP: by Mark Halstead and Liam Cunningham • May 23 – Simmer 2 We would like to initiate an Annual • May 23 – Memorial Day Party • May 24 – Holiday Distance Race Club event to celebrate Flag Day • June 6 – Simmer 3 (6/14/15) by organizing a boat • June 14 – Flag Day Raft Up raft up adjacent to an Island (TBD • June 15-17 – Kids Sail Camp based upon water levels and • June 20 – BOS Meeting number of boats). • June 20 – Simmer 4 • June 22-24 – Kids Sail Camp Each boat would be encouraged to decorate their boat with flags, burgees and pennants.Boats with grills would be designated as “cooking boats” and take on the task of cooking hotdogs and hamburgers. Other boats would sign up to bring an appetizer, dessert or side. The raft up would be initiated by using 3-5 anchor boats that would deploy both stern and bow anchors with additional boats rafting up alongside these boats. We would use the club skiffs to transport supplies to the adjacent island and to ferry people ashore if needed.

On the island we would set up cornhole and other games along with having coolers for drinks. We would request for boats to register for the event prior to the day of event in order to best determine alocation for the raft up and for purchasing of supplies.

Contact Mark Halstead ([email protected]) and Liam Cunningham ([email protected]) to indicate your interest in participating.
