American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information Rambler Six and V8: 1955 – 1957 1955 Nash Rambler Six The 1955 Nash Rambler received a minor facelift over 1954, but was basically unchanged from the car issued in 1953, which was distinguished by a lowered hood, and enclosed front and rear fenders. That styling had been credited to Pinin Farina and did have many of the styling features of the 1952 and 1953 Golden Anniversary Ambassador and Statesman. (For more information on the 1953 Rambler, see the Tech Section on Nash vehicles). New for 1955 features included the addition of a cellular grille and full wheel cut-outs in the front fenders, versus the previous enclosed look. Ramblers came in two wheelbase models; 100" for the Standard 2- 1955 Rambler Cross Country Station Wagon. door and 4-door cars and 108" for "Custom" 2 and 4-door models as is the station wagon shown at right. As part of the merger, the Rambler was sold as the "Nash Rambler" and the "Hudson Rambler". See the discussion under Hudson Cars for more information. The 85 horsepower 184 cu. in. 6-cylinder engine of previous years was dropped and was replaced by the 90 horsepower 196 cubic inch engine, which had come on the Hydra-Matic equipped cars in 1953 and 1954. It now was the sole available powerplant. Rambler consistently held the No. 1 spot in used car value, as reflected in NADA reports of the time. As such, for 1955, 56,023 Nash Ramblers were sold. And when combined with Hudson Rambler sales, over 81 thousand were delivered to customers, which, at the time, was the highest total ever.

American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information Rambler Classic: 1961 – 1962 1961 Rambler Classic The Rambler was renamed "Classic" for 1961 to help create a stronger individual model identity. Thus, the "Rambler Six" and "Rebel V-8" names were retired at the end of the 1960 model year. The Classic was available with both 6 and V8 engines. An aluminum block version of the OHV 196 I-6 engine was an available as well. Ramblers featured "twin circuit" brakes, a safety design offered by only a few cars at that time and now mandated by DOT. 1961 Rambler Classic Six The 61 received a new front end featuring a one-piece rectangular, Super 4-Door Sedan extruded aluminum grille with "Rambler" at the bottom, just above the bumper. The parking/turn indicator lights were relocated to just below the front bumper. New front and rear bumpers were also used along with new side trim. DeLuxe Series standard equipment included turn signals; twin panel ash trays; air cleaner; front arm rests; cigar lighter; dual headlamps; dual sun visors. Station Wagons received a travel rack and five black tubeless tires. Super Series models were equipped the same as above plus dual horns; rear door arm rests; front foam cushion and rear ash trays. Custom Series models were equipped 1961 Rambler Classic V8 Custom 4-Door Sedan with all above plus full wheel discs; electric clock; glove box light; two-tone steering wheel; carpets and rear vent window. A major engineering change (and a first for the industry) was the introduction of a die-cast aluminum, six-cylinder engine - standard for Classic Custom models, and optional on DeLuxe and Super models.

  • AMC Straight-6 Engine 1 AMC Straight-6 Engine
AMC straight-6 engine 1 AMC straight-6 engine The American Motors Corporation (AMC) straight-6 family of engines was used in AMC passenger cars and Jeep vehicles from 1964 through 2006. 195.6 American Motors' first straight-six engine was the 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L). It was produced from 1958 through 1965 in both overhead valve (OHV) and flathead (L-head) side-valve versions. Sometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 1956–1957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold. American Motors introduced a die-cast aluminum block version of the OHV 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L) engine in 1961. It was produced through 1964. This engine used cast-iron cylinder liners and a cast-iron head.

Nash Healey December 2012 Newsletter Merry Christmas To AllTo All 2012 Glenmoor Gathering of Signifigant Automobiles Photos of Reggie Nash and his beautiful 1951 Nash Healey at the Glenmoor Gathering of Signifigant Automobiles held in Canton, Ohio September 14 – 16. This is an invitation only event which features rare and outstanding automobiles Concours d Elegance Zoute Grand Prix Knokke-Zoute Belgium JAN DYCK of Belgium participated in this October 6, 2012 event. His car was awarded the honor of being chosen as the promotional vehicle for the 2013 Event As a lot of the Nash Healey Owners will know, there were 3 push rod cylinder heads with Hemispherical shaped combustion chambers made for the Nash Healey race cars that ran at the 24 hours of LeMans. I have attached an article from the November 1952 Road and Track magazine with the history of same. The head was designed and produced in England and while it produced a giant horsepower increase it failed to finish the 24 hour endurance race as explained in the article. The head is a cross flow design with six separate (flat 1.5") intake ports with two studs each on the right side and six separate exhaust ports of the same design on left side. Both the intake and exhaust ports and valves are much larger than the normal N/H cylinder head could accomodate and should be able to breathe for an engine to near 300 HP. The exhaust valves are operated via a transverse push rod crossing the head to the exhaust rocker arm on the left side of the head.

  • AN AMERICAN MOTORS HOME LIBRARY by Patrick R Foster
AN AMERICAN MOTORS HOME LIBRARY by Patrick R Foster For years I've collected AMC-related books and have accumulated a substantial library. As an aid to others in the hobby who may share an interest in books, I’ve compiled a list of AMC-related books, both in print and out. AMC hobbyists interested in reading more about their cars and the companies that built them will find useful information in these books. The books listed as 'Out Of Print' are generally no longer available through regular stores or catalogs, but can be found at flea markets, AMC swap meets, and through my used book service. The books listed as "In Print" are generally available at the time of this writing, although several have been on the market for a while and may be nearly sold out. Most of these books can be purchased at The Olde Milford Press- www.oldemilfordpress.com BOOKS OUT OF PRINT: AMAZING AMC MUSCLE 1968-1974- by Edrie Marquez, is a softbound history of AMC performance cars and racing cars. • American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information
American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information Ambassador: 1963 - 1964 1963 Ambassador Much like 1962, the Ambassador was on the same platform as the Rambler Classic and merely varied in terms of trim and interior appointments. However, the Ambassador and Classic's wheelbase was increased to 112" from 108", to recover interior space lost when the cars share the same chassis shell (since 1958). Form a styling point of view - the Ambassador was transformed from a stodgy 1950's look to an up-to-date 1960's car. The car was 1963 Ambassador 990 2-Dr. Sedan crisp, lithe, clean and actually looked longer, lower and wider than the statistics would say. Very little of the exterior sheet metal carried over from 1962. The grille had a horizontal center blade which returned to carrying a centered "Ambassador" nameplate. A band of horizontal trim decorated the body sides, low down, between the two wheel housings. This helped to strengthen the appearance of length over the Classic, which was exactly the same size. "Ambassador" in script was placed on the side of the rear fenders; and the rear end featured a vertically ribbed, horizontal beauty panel. The Rambler Classic tail lamps were used, but chrome division bars were added, again to give the illusion of greater width over the Classic. A center mounted "Ambassador" nameplates and 1963 Ambassador 990 4-Dr. Station Wagon logo badge was set on the top center edge of the trunk. AMC had moved away from the "Deluxe", "Super" and "Custom" series designations, and now three new trim levels were offered, replacing these "old" nomenclatures: 800; 880; and 990.

  • The Rambler Man
THE RAMBLER MAN One wouldn't consider it much of an obituary. A life reduced to eleven paragraphs in The Dallas Morning News. The commentary is not remarkable for a person of the prominence of ex-deputy sheriff Roger Craig. Not for the employee the Dallas County sheriff's office proclaimed "Man of the Year" in 1960. Roger Craig's popularity grew among Kennedy assassination investigators when he maintained he witnessed an event involving a Nash Rambler station wagon in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963. He spoke freely about the incident, disputed details of the assassination with superior officers, lost his job, aided in Jim Garrison's probe of Clay Shaw, became the friend of several researchers' and died by his own hand on May 15, 1975. Sadly, Craig's father discovered the body in a back bedroom of the small house on Luna Road in Dallas, this a few minutes after the old man had returned from mowing his lawn. There was a note. The physical and mental anguish resulting from a car wreck in 1973 and a shotgun wound to the shoulder sustained in 1974 was too much. Roger was sorry for what he had to do but he just "couldn't stand the pain." In the quiet of the Dallas Public Library I reviewed the eighteen year old obituary. I remembered the story of Craig's sighting of the Nash Rambler station wagon in front of the Texas School Book Depository on November 22nd. His account became important when a claim arose that Marina Oswald's friend and confidant, Ruth Paine, owned a similar vehicle.
