The Club will soon be painting Jackson’s fire hydrants white – I gather the participants know when. Irene Perbal-Boylson urges us all to bring visitors to the Club meeting. She suggests that former members may just be waiting for an invitation to re-join. In any case – bring a guest, and let her know when you’ve earned points. Tuesday 7:15am Plymouth: 49er RV Resort Frank Halvorson brought us up-to-date on happenings at the Hotel Leger in Moke Hill. A popular TV Wednesday 12:00 show undertakes to re-vamp decrepit hotels in a blitz fashion and then air the results. -

American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information Rambler Six and V8: 1955 – 1957 1955 Nash Rambler Six The 1955 Nash Rambler received a minor facelift over 1954, but was basically unchanged from the car issued in 1953, which was distinguished by a lowered hood, and enclosed front and rear fenders. That styling had been credited to Pinin Farina and did have many of the styling features of the 1952 and 1953 Golden Anniversary Ambassador and Statesman. (For more information on the 1953 Rambler, see the Tech Section on Nash vehicles). New for 1955 features included the addition of a cellular grille and full wheel cut-outs in the front fenders, versus the previous enclosed look. Ramblers came in two wheelbase models; 100" for the Standard 2- 1955 Rambler Cross Country Station Wagon. door and 4-door cars and 108" for "Custom" 2 and 4-door models as is the station wagon shown at right. As part of the merger, the Rambler was sold as the "Nash Rambler" and the "Hudson Rambler". See the discussion under Hudson Cars for more information. The 85 horsepower 184 cu. in. 6-cylinder engine of previous years was dropped and was replaced by the 90 horsepower 196 cubic inch engine, which had come on the Hydra-Matic equipped cars in 1953 and 1954. It now was the sole available powerplant. Rambler consistently held the No. 1 spot in used car value, as reflected in NADA reports of the time. As such, for 1955, 56,023 Nash Ramblers were sold. And when combined with Hudson Rambler sales, over 81 thousand were delivered to customers, which, at the time, was the highest total ever. -

American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information Rambler Classic: 1961 – 1962 1961 Rambler Classic The Rambler was renamed "Classic" for 1961 to help create a stronger individual model identity. Thus, the "Rambler Six" and "Rebel V-8" names were retired at the end of the 1960 model year. The Classic was available with both 6 and V8 engines. An aluminum block version of the OHV 196 I-6 engine was an available as well. Ramblers featured "twin circuit" brakes, a safety design offered by only a few cars at that time and now mandated by DOT. 1961 Rambler Classic Six The 61 received a new front end featuring a one-piece rectangular, Super 4-Door Sedan extruded aluminum grille with "Rambler" at the bottom, just above the bumper. The parking/turn indicator lights were relocated to just below the front bumper. New front and rear bumpers were also used along with new side trim. DeLuxe Series standard equipment included turn signals; twin panel ash trays; air cleaner; front arm rests; cigar lighter; dual headlamps; dual sun visors. Station Wagons received a travel rack and five black tubeless tires. Super Series models were equipped the same as above plus dual horns; rear door arm rests; front foam cushion and rear ash trays. Custom Series models were equipped 1961 Rambler Classic V8 Custom 4-Door Sedan with all above plus full wheel discs; electric clock; glove box light; two-tone steering wheel; carpets and rear vent window. A major engineering change (and a first for the industry) was the introduction of a die-cast aluminum, six-cylinder engine - standard for Classic Custom models, and optional on DeLuxe and Super models. -

American Motors Corporation Model Descriptions and General Information 1956 Statesman and Ambassador 1956 Statesman Gets a New Look The 1956 Nash Statesman received a major facelift. The front and rear fenders were restyled. There were larger front running lights and new taillights. A revised hood ornament was used and one- piece rear windows replaced the three piece '55 unit. The chrome side stripping now included a shallow 'Z' shape on the side and outline moldings on the hood and rear fenders. A 12-volt electrical system was used for the first time. Statesman was being phased out, - so the only Statesman model available for 1956 was the "Super" four-door sedan. Surprisingly, even though its days were numbered, the Statesman engine was redesigned to fit an overhead valve cylinder head and a 1956 Statesman 4-Door Sedan. two-barrel carb. This did increase the power to 130 hp, ten more than the two carb L-Head had produced, and more importantly 15 more foot-pounds of torque. It also allowed the compression ratio to be reduced to 7.47:1 letting the Statesman return to regular grade fuel. This motor was shared with the Rambler, albeit there with a one-barrel carb and ten less horsepower. 1956 Ambassador Ambassador for 1956 still offered the 6 and 8 cylinder variants, though the six mimicked the Statesman in that only one body style was offered; the 4-Door Super. It too shared all the styling changes of 1956 Statesman, but on the seven inch longer wheelbase of the 1956 Statesman 4-Door Sedan. -

An Engineering Odyssey: From All-Steel to True Unit Bodies 1914-1960 Technical advances in body engineering was not necessarily a hallmark of the early Chrysler Corporation. In fact, Chalmers and Maxwell more or less served as a parts bin for the for the first Chrysler, although it is true that body engineer Oliver Clark — working under ZSB — added a number of touches to make the early Chryslers attractive and contemporary-looking. Fisher Body was one of the Company’s early suppliers, providing the Chrysler bodies and body parts until Fisher became part of GM and Walter Chrysler cut off the relationship. The Fisher bodies were composite wood and steel, quick to tool and easy to change although requiring large numbers of skilled labors and experienced woodworkers to build. At Dodge Brothers, however, which Chrysler soon acquired, all- steel bodies were the standard. The Dodge brothers had first hooked up with the E.G. Budd Manufacturing Company in 1914, and “all steel” had been a Dodge feature ever since. Budd had started to build all-steel touring-car bodies in late 1912. Among the company’s early body customers was Oakland, and it also supplied pressedsteel panels that year for Ford, Willys-Overland and Buick. In late 1914, Dodge Brothers contracted with Budd to make 5,000 all-steel bodies for the company’s new touring car. The 1915 Dodge became an immediate hit, and, by 1916, Budd was building 500 bodies a day for Dodge. Budd and the Dodge Brothers believed an all-steel body to be more uniform, lighter, stronger, more quickly made and painted and therefore less expensive than a composite body. -

This is an invitation only event which features rare and outstanding automobiles Concours d Elegance Zoute Grand Prix Knokke-Zoute Belgium JAN DYCK of Belgium participated in this October 6, 2012 event. His car was awarded the honor of being chosen as the promotional vehicle for the 2013 Event As a lot of the Nash Healey Owners will know, there were 3 push rod cylinder heads with Hemispherical shaped combustion chambers made for the Nash Healey race cars that ran at the 24 hours of LeMans. I have attached an article from the November 1952 Road and Track magazine with the history of same. The head was designed and produced in England and while it produced a giant horsepower increase it failed to finish the 24 hour endurance race as explained in the article. The head is a cross flow design with six separate (flat 1.5") intake ports with two studs each on the right side and six separate exhaust ports of the same design on left side. Both the intake and exhaust ports and valves are much larger than the normal N/H cylinder head could accomodate and should be able to breathe for an engine to near 300 HP. The exhaust valves are operated via a transverse push rod crossing the head to the exhaust rocker arm on the left side of the head. -
