It was a celebration in which history — and historic artifacts — shone almost as brightly as the overbearing late-summer sun. Some say private Bible reading just first step for Catholics VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Private Bible reading is important, but for Catholics it is just the first step toward understanding the word of God, said several members of the world Synod of Bishops. During the first 10 days of the Oct. 5-26 synod on the Bible, a recurring theme in the synod hall was the tension several bishops see be- tween some schools of biblical scholarship and the traditional faith of the church. The day after Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec presented his summary of the synod’s initial discussions Oct. 15, several synod members met with reporters to discuss points the cardinal raised. U.S. Cardinal William J. Levada, prefect of the Congre- gation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said the tension between some schools of inter- pretation, or exegesis, and the traditional theology and teaching of the church was “not just one of the key -- but I would say one of the most delicate -- questions” for the synod. Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer of Sao Paulo, Brazil, told the reporters that the synod members insisted that “exegesis is not enough,” because understanding what God is saying requires an attitude of listening in faith. McQuady Native Professes Vows with Sister Servants in Irondale, Alabama By Sister Many Agnes VonderHaar, OSU On August 15, Sister Mary Anthony Whitfill promised to live a life of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience for one year as a Sister Servant of the Eternal Word. Katie Whitfill entered the Sister Servants in 2005. When she was invested as a member of the community in 2006, she chose the name of Sister Mary Anthony of the Triumph of the Holy Cross and began her formation as a novice in the Community. Her novitiate training was completed this summer and she made her promises to Mother Mary Gabriel in the presence of Bishop Robert Joseph Baker, D.D., of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham, in the Chapel of Casa Maria Retreat Center. During the ceremony, Sister exchanged the white veil of a novice for the black veil of a professed sister. Sister Mary Anthony is the daughter of Ron and Jamesetta Whitfill, members of Saint Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, McQuady, Kentucky. Thirty-some members of her family and friends traveled to Alabama for the ceremony, during which they were awed by a Mass sung in ancient Latin chant by the Sisters of the Community. Sister will renew her vows for one year for the next four years and then, if she wishes, she will profess her vows for life. The Community of the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word is 21 years old and they have 18 members, which include one postulant and four novices. The sisters are involved in Retreat and Catechetical Ministry. They follow the rules of St. Francis and St. Dominic. Their Motherhouse and Retreat Center are just outside Burmingham on Belmont Road and just minutes away form the EWTN campus many are familiar with. The Sisters look forward, somewhat impatiently, to the construction of a new Motherhouse chapel. Amazingly, the Sisters have been and will be involved in much of the labor involved in drawing up the plans as well as the less skilled construction jobs of each of their buildings. Which one do you have for the Pregnancy Care Centers? The Pregnancy Centers are the opposite to the Abortion Mills. They try very hard to help those wounded by abortion and those needing help to raise their babies. Recently a client told me she has a friend who has had 9 abortions. The answer is not 9 abortions. Something is terribly wrong with that mind set as a contraceptive device to kill her child, I want to help mothers to see they should never have to think about abortion, as the answer. We will help them where I work, at the Shelter of Love Pregnancy Care Center, in Morganfield,Ky. In regard to the pro-life work that I do, I was reminded by one of my stu- dents at CCD class. The Walk was held at Daviess County High School grounds on September 27, from 9:00am till noon. Walkers were asked to obtain Walk Spon- sors as a way of raising funds for donations to St. Vincent de Paul. Walk registration and donation forms are available from St. Vincent de Paul members at Owensboro area parish or at the St. Stephen Cathedral Parish Office. The St. Vincent de Paul Society does so much to help the poor in the Diocese of West- ern Ky. Last year alone they gave $624,797 in direct service to 58,086 people. In addition to that, they provided $580,699 in in-kind services to the poor and needy. Look around! You will find very few groups that do such things for the poor in Christ’s name and in the name of our faith communities. Catholics were asked to step up Saturday, 9-27-08 on the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the St. Vincent de Paul Society to “Walk for the Poor.” Events were going on in a few different places in the Diocese.

Peter and Paul School on Saturday, October 11 and Saturday, October 18 when they gathered to perform basic maintenance and repairs on the mobile class- rooms of the school. Some of the maintenance and repair tasks included: clean- ing the eaves in preparation for roof sealant application; apply- ing roof sealant; trimming the trees off the buildings; cleaning out the gutters; sealing the storm windows; and repairing the underpinning. More than a dozen Knights worked on the first Saturday as temperatures climbed to the low 80s.
