  • The Roads and Railways
The Roads and Railways ntil the eighteenth century, villagers travelled slowly on local by- ways and drove roads. Local landowners and gentry helped improve Utransport by financing the first turnpike roads at the end of the seventeenth century. They were managed by local trusts and the costs of construction were recouped by tolls collected by pikemen. The Temple family of Stowe helped finance the turnpike that passed Finmere. It ran from Bedford via Stony Stratford, Buckingham, Tingewick, Aynho and Banbury to Warmington in Warwickshire. The section that bypassed Finmere (the old B4031) was the first to be built in 1744. There was a turnpike at ‘Finmere 1784 2000 Warren Gates,’ the tolls from which produced an income of £253 a year in 1784. After construction of the turnpike, the old Roman road was left as a £253 £20,000 bridleway. In 1813, a turnpike branch was laid from the Red Lion to Bicester. The Stowe Road Dadford ord Temple, Richard Grenville, inherited Stowe in 1749. Building on Stowe House Corinthian the work of his uncle, Lord Cobham, Temple energetically reshaped the Arch Oxford Avenue Lhouse and grounds. By his death in 1779, he had overseen the creation NORTH Boycott of one of the finest garden landscapes in Europe. Welsh Oxford Manor Water To Lan Biddenham e The Lord Temple’s magnificent estate needed good road connections. He planned Course that visiting nobility and royalty would approach on perfectly straight roads Water Stratford lined with trees. As they rode closer to the estate, grand vistas would open Lodge Buffler's Holt revealing the glory of Stowe, the splendour of its temples and the opulence (Robin Hood) of the main house.

Address all communication to Secretary to the Commission United States International Trade Commission Washington, DC 20436 www.usitc.gov Preface The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) has initiated its current Industry and Trade Summary series of reports to provide information on the rapidly evolving trade and competitive situation of the thousands of products imported into and exported from the United States. Over the past 20 years, U.S. international trade in goods and services has risen by almost 350 percent, compared to an increase of 180 percent in the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), before falling sharply in late 2008 and 2009 due to the economic downturn. During the same two decades, international supply chains have become more global and competition has increased. Each Industry and Trade Summary addresses a different commodity or industry and contains information on trends in consumption, production, and trade, as well as an analysis of factors affecting industry trends and competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets. This report on the railway rolling stock industry primarily covers the period from 2004 to 2009, and includes data for 2010 where available.

  • 3.20 Down Manchester,” L.N.E.R
No. 9 The “3.20 Down Manchester,” L.N.E.R. First published in the Meccano Magazine September 1927 It was something of a shock to the well-established London and North Western and Great Northern Railways when the Midland signified its intention of extending its ramified system southward to its own terminus in London and, as an earnest of the intention, ran a line through Bedford to Hitchin and monopolised a large share of the Great Northern main line into King’s Cross until its own St. Pancras Station was ready in 1868. Still more of a surprise, perhaps, was given to all these three companies when, nearly at the close of last century, in the face of determined opposition, the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway obtained Parliamentary powers to do exactly the same thing. Prior to the opening of the “London Extension” in 1899, the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire was an important system crossing the country from Cleethorpes and Grimsby in the east, through Sheffield and Barnsley to Manchester in the west, with a share in the large joint railway known as the Cheshire Lines Committee, and important interests in North Wales, its southernmost tentacle extended to Annesley, near Nottingham. The powers obtained enabled the M.S. and L. Company to prolong this line southward through Nottingham, Leicester and Rugby to a 1 junction with the London Metropolitan Railway, which had advanced northward to a point beyond Aylesbury. As a result of this vastly important development the provincial railway required a new name, and included in the Parliamentary powers was the authority to change its name from Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire to the imposing title of “Great Central” Railway.

Editorial As can be seen opposite in Paul Steedman’s picture, we have moved from South West Trains 20 year tenure of our local franchise to the new South Western Railway operation. Or to put it another way from one transport conglomerate (Stagecoach) to another (First with MTR). The franchise changed hands in the middle of the Waterloo blockade, and ever since there have been numerous infrastructure failures mostly the responsibility of Network Rail but which have naturally focussed unwanted attention on SWR. In addition, the publication of the draft 2018 timetable has seen much comment about the reduction in Weymouth to London trains in favour of the Portsmouth service, and the speeding up of others at the expense of removing virtually all the minor stations from the London service off peak.

  • Preserved Coaching Stock of British Railways Part
PRESERVED COACHING STOCK OF BRITISH RAILWAYS PART TWO GROUPING DESIGN STOCK Locomotive Hauled Passenger Carrying and Non-Passenger Carrying Coaching Stock built to Grouping Company Designs Peter Hall 7 Barnes Avenue, Dronfield Woodhouse, Dronfield, S18 8YF Telephone 01246-412629 Mobile 078704 50903 email [email protected] INTRODUCTION The intention of this document is to give details of locomotive hauled passenger and non-passenger carrying coaching stock built to Grouping Company designs that can now be considered to be in a preserved or similar status. Thus, not included is coaching stock in regular use on the National Railway network or awaiting disposal or further use having seen use on the National Railway network. Certain items of coaching stock included here could though, see use on the National Railway network on an occasional basis or as part of a heritage train formation. Not included here are the various carriages that have been subsequently sold overseas for further use or preservation Before proceeding further it is worthwhile explaining the ground rules used to decide which vehicles are and are not included within this document. The chronological boundaries for inclusion can be generally stated as carriages constructed by the four grouping companies, Great Western Railway, Southern Railway, London, Midland and Scottish Railway and London and North Eastern Railway and in addition carriages of the Pullman Car Company and Wagon-Lits of the same era, used in Great Britain. However the boundaries have been extended to cover carriages to the grouping company designs produced in the years following nationalisation, until such times as their designs were superseded by British Railways standard designs.
