It was established as Kakatiya University on 19th August, 1976 and incorporated in the State Universities Act (Act 44 of 1976). The University achieved recognition status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1978 under 2f, 12B. It was first accredited by NAAC with B+ grade in 2003 and 'A' grade in 2009. In August 2017, the University retained 'A' grade with improved CGPA of 3.36 as against 3.02 in 2009. In 2018 National Institutional Ranking Framework of Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India (NIRF) ranking, Kakatiya University was placed in II-Band (101-150) in overall category and in III-Band in Institutions category. In December 2018, the University is awarded with Graded Autonomy by the UGC and was also considered for sanction of Rs. 50 Cr. Grant for Research under RUSA. In sustainability, Kakatiya University secured 114th rank in the World Sustainable University Rank evaluabted by Indonesia under "Green Matric" (Campus setting). Within India, University stands 1st in Telangana State and 4th in India. ISO 9001 2015 Certification (2020) The University is located in the historical city of Warangal, the erstwhile seat of the Kakatiya Dynasty. It is spread in a sprawling area of about 650 acres with seven vibrant colleges on its lush green Vidyaranyapuri campus. It has two satellite campuses, one at Subedari, Hanamkonda, and the other at Kothagudem, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, which are spread in an area of 520.41 acres. In the course of time and to cater to the regional needs of the Telangana people, the University has established Post-graduate Colleges at Subedari (Hanamkonda), Khammam, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhoopalpally, Mahabubabad and an Engineering College at Kothagudem. Geographically the University is spread into 11 districts of Telangana. The University has 16 constituent and affiliated colleges. Of these affiliated colleges, the University has given affiliation to 73 Post- graduation, 297 Under-graduation, 08 Engineering, 03 Law, 25 MBA, 25 Pharmacy, 03 Physical Education, 05 MCA, 03 Hotel 4 Management colleges. The University initaited several measures to encourage the affiliated colleges to attain 'Autonomy' status, and so far 08 colleges are autonomous. In all the University caters to the needs of over 2.23 lakhs total students through its constituent and affiliated colleges. The University which started with four departments (Telugu, English, Chemistry and Mathematics in 1976), today it has 8 faculties (Arts, Science, Commerce & Business Management, Pharmacy, Social Science, Law, Education, and Engineering); with 24 departments offering 022 programs in regular stream and 25 programs as per UGC DEB through distance mode. All the programs offered by the University have due recognition and each of the professional courses is streamlined with respective regulatory body. In 2019-20 about 4500 students are on rolls on the main campus of the University of which about 3200 students are accommodated in 14 hostels. The average demand ratio for admissions is 1:3 and the University competency in teaching (Student-Teacher) ratio is 1:10. The University fulfilling the UGC norms has adopted Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in UG & PG non-professional courses in all constituent and affiliated colleges. The Deans of Faculties and the Chairpersons, Board of Studies, have contributed to curriculum enrichment and introduction of socially relevant courses to meet the needs of the society in general and the student community in particular. To enhance the teaching learning process, all the University departments are made autonomous in its operations. The departments have ICT enabled classrooms Computer Labs and independent seminar halls. The Central Library with INFLIBNET provides access to thousands of online journals of national and international reputation. The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled with sufficient bandwidth and facilitating online communications and management information system for good governance. The University has a team of highly qualified faculty. The total faculty strength of the University is 257 (permanent and contractual). Faculty members published research articles in reputed national and international journals with high impact factor. Of the 24 departments, 12 are UGC-SAP, 8 are DST-FIST, and 9 are UGC- BSR funded departments. On an average the University conducts 5 about 50 seminars/ conferences/symposia/training programs in a year and about 1000 research papers are published by the University teachers and students. The University also brings out 5 research journals. All the departments have state-of-the art facilities for carrying out research work in various fields. The University established several collaborations and MOUs with reputed National and International research centers to promote multi disciplinary research activites. For Academic Integrity, similarity check (plagiarism) is made mandatory for all research works. The examination branch is fully automated with online services and the University has also reached a Memorandum of Understanding for National Academic Depository. The completion rate of students in different courses is: UG - 48%; PG: 90%; and PhD: 60%. The overall progression rate of the University students is 65%, of which 32% go for higher education; 12% join teaching profession, 15% take corporate Jobs; and 5% either build their own business or become entrepreneurs. Each of the student support wings like NSS, Sports and the Cultural and Literary units are actively involved in training and developing students as responsible student community. University students have brought laurels to the University by winning several medals and prizes in various events at regional and national level. A centrally air-conditioned auditorium with 1200 seating capacity is available to conduct various activities. The centralized building division looks into the every-day needs such as civil, electrical, sanitary and other repairing works
