1. Introduction

The UGC Networking Resource Centre at the School of Chemistry, University of

Hyderabad (UGC-NRC) was established in June 2008 based on the special grant received for the purpose from the University Grants Commission, in response to the proposal submitted by the

School in February 2008. Against a total sanctioned fund of Rs.10,00,00,000, the UGC released to the University, Rs.5,00,00,000 in 2008, subsequently Rs.1,00,00,000 in 2014 and Rs.

3,00,00,000 in 2015. The UGC also approved and sanctioned in 2012, a special fund to establish a Hostel for the UGC-NRC. Rs. 1,80,00,000 was received under this head.

The UGC-NRC aims to network with other academic institutions, especially undergraduate and postgraduate colleges and universities in the country, and thereby contribute to the progress in chemical education and research; a major focus is on less-endowed academic institutions. Since its inception, the UGC-NRC has undertaken all the goals and activities mandated under the award of this program. It has also constructed and established recently, the

Hostel mentioned above. Detailed report on the organizational aspects of the UGC-NRC and the various activities organized by the Centre, and some details regarding the UGC-NRC Hostel and other relevant aspects of UGC-NRC are provided in the following pages.

2. Mandate

The main focus of the UGC-NRC is on the students and faculty of chemical education and research programs in other (especially less-endowed) academic institutions. The specific goals may be listed under:

 Research, training and skills development of the faculty and students through periodic discussion, workshop and specialized workshops / schools.

 Capacity building by adopting faculty and departments for augmenting their research skills and to mentor.

 Hosting and facilitating researchers from other institutions to carry out key experiments and research investigations.

 Augmenting the information resource and infrastructure facility of the School to provide quality research support to the visitors and other institutions.

3. Organization / Management a. Program Implementation Committee

The programs and activities of the UGC-NRC are formulated and monitored by the

Program Implementation Committee constituted and headed by the Vice Chancellor of the

University. The Committee typically meets once in a year; the last meeting of the Committee was held on November 27, 2015; the next one will be held during Nov. – Dec. 2016. The term of the Committee is typically three years; constitution of the present committee is:

c. Website of the Centre

The website of the UGC-NRC (http://chemistry.uohyd.ac.in/~nrc) provides a general overview of the mandate and activities of the Centre, detailed guidelines about the different programs (training visit, project, summer / winter school etc.) and current updates, and allows online application to the different programs. The site has a page on which detailed follow-up information on the research students and faculty members who have participated in the training visit program of the Centre are collated; this will be extended to participants of the other programs as well. Some details of the Hostel and guidelines to avail the accommodation facility will be provided online in the near future.

d. Administration and online accounting

The accounting as well as maintenance of the visitor’s registry is facilitated by a custom- built software called the Program Management System (PMS). Its capabilities are:

1. Automated accounting of the project funds under various heads a. computation of the maintenance allowances to be paid to the visitors b. allocation and accounting of consumables funds to different research groups c. accounting of staff salaries, honoraria for experts etc. d. purchases, payments and advances 2. Production of purchase orders and payment bills by individual research groups etc. 3. Maintenance of a registry of visitors : start and end of projects/visits and leave record 4. 4. Activities

Since its inception, UGC-NRC has been organizing a wide range of academic activities catering to different levels of students and teachers. The five major programs are:

a. Training visit

UGC-NRC, with an intention to nurture the chemical research activities in colleges and universities, supports the visits of research students and teachers. Participants of the Training

Visit program carry out their research works utilizing the expertise and facility of the research groups in the School of Chemistry. These visits lasting 1 – 6 months give ample exposure to modern laboratory and analytical techniques to the visitors and help them accomplish a substantial amount of quality research work. The participants are provided travel support, accommodation and a maintenance allowance.

b. Summer / Winter Project

To attract young students to pursue a research career in chemistry, the UGC-NRC supports students at the B.Sc. and M.Sc. level, based on their motivation and academic performance, to carry out summer/winter projects of maximum 2 months duration. During the project period the students are acquainted with the modern research environment and laboratory techniques and are involved in original research activity. The projects students are provided travel support, accommodation and a maintenance allowance. Due to an exponential increase in the number of applicants in recent years (see the data provided in the Table below), the projects have largely been awarded to applicants in post-graduate programs. We plan to increase the intake from undergraduate level students in the coming years.

c. Winter / Summer School

UGC-NRC conducts regularly winter/summer schools of typically 2 – 3 weeks duration to introduce Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty of colleges and universities to the frontiers of chemical research, by organizing lectures and classes by subject experts and conducting hands-on laboratory experiments. The participants’ travel and accommodation are supported by the UGC-NRC. This program has been extremely popular and successful; a large number of applications are received regularly (see the data in the Table given on next page).

d. Lecture visit: School faculty

This program was initiated last year. The visits are intended to facilitate the implementation of the following basic mandates of the UGC Networking Resource Centre

(NRC): (a) mentoring the research, training and skills development of chemistry students/faculty of other (especially less-endowed) institutions, (b) supporting the development of the research capabilities and education programs in the chemistry departments of other (especially less- endowed) institutions. Each faculty member of the School can make one such visit during an academic year. The details of such visits undertaken so far are listed below.

e. Short visits

1. Open House program during IYC

An Open House under the banner “Chemistry: Chemicals and Beyond” was organized as part of the International Year of Chemistry programs in the School of Chemistry, with the broad focus on sensitizing young students (at Class XI and XII levels) to the fascination and challenges of Chemistry, beyond the familiar world of just chemicals. The program was organized on November 5, 12 and 19, 2011. Experiments and demonstrations were set up in 23 laboratories in the School including the computer laboratory and sophisticated instrumentation facilities such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, single crystal x-ray diffractometer and electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer. As a follow up measure, 7 selected students were offered summer projects in the School. Demonstration of an experiment by a research student to the School students is shown in the photograph below.

2. Regular visits Students (mostly undergraduate and post-graduate) from various colleges from within and outside the state visited the laboratories and instrumentation facilities in the School; this facility was initiated formally during the last few years. They were given a motivational lecture by one of the faculty members. Lunch for the students and the accompanying teachers was arranged in the UGC-NRC Hostel. 5. Hostel

Based on the letter from UGC (No. F. No. 10.5/2008 (BSR) dated 9.12.2011), the School of Chemistry submitted a plan and estimate for Rs.2.00 crores towards the construction of a

Hostel facility for the UGC-NRC on 11.1.2012. Based on our proposal, the UGC approved the sanction of Rs.2.00 Crores and released Rs.1.00 Crore (Letter No. F.4-6/2006(BSR)/10.4/2008

(BSR) dated 23.7.2013) + Rs.0.80 Crore (Letter No. F.10-4/2008 (BSR) dated 06.08.2014).

Construction of the Hostel was completed by the summer of 2014, at a cost of ~ Rs.1.74

Crore. It has a floor area of 952 m2 (ground floor) + 680 m2 (first floor); there are 30 double-bed rooms (4 air-conditioned) fully furnished and with internet and wi-fi connectivity, office, reading and recreation space, kitchen and dining facility; security cameras are also installed in the premises. Views of the Hostel are attached below. Catering and house-keeping services are out- sourced following due tendering process. The Hostel has been in use since November, 2014.

6. Research Infrastructure

Even though no major equipment was purchased under the UGC-NRC program, the funds under the infrastructure head has been used to support the maintenance of the sophisticated equipment such as NMR, single crystal x-ray diffractometer and microscopy facility in the

School of Chemistry, which are extensively used by the participants of the various UGC-NRC programs. Funds were also utilized to create additional space for classes/seminar, laboratory and research work, as well as housing some of the sophisticated equipment. The Project Associate

(Technical) in the management staff of the UGC-NRC helps with the maintenance and operation of the equipment and work space.
