It was not released as a single in the UK, where buyers who could not afford the album had to settle for heath Hampstead's Polydor version. It is the last Bee Gees single to feature Vince Melouney's guitar since he left the band in early December after releasing the song as a single. The B-side of the song was Kilburn Towers, except for France, where Swan Song was used. I Started a Joke was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb and produced by the Bee Gees with Robert Stigwood. The set and recording of songs for the album Idea was completed on June 20. I Started A Joke was the last recorded. According to Robin Gibb, the melancholic melody of the song was inspired by the sounds on board the plane: The melody for this was heard on board the Viscount British Airways Vickers about a hundred miles from Essen. It was one of those old four prop engines jobs that seemed like a passenger drone in a kind of hypnotic trance, but with that it was different. Droning, after a while, seems to take the form of a melody that mysteriously sounded like a church choir. So it was a decision! We hooked the pilot, forced him to land in the nearest village and there, in a small pub, we finished the texts [with Barry]. Actually it wasn't a village, it was a city, and it wasn't a pub, it was a hotel, and we didn't force the pilot to land on the field... but why ruin a pretty good story? There was a lot of it in those days, Barry laughed: There was a lot of psychedelics and the idea that if you wrote something, even if it sounded ridiculous, someone would find meaning to it, and that was the truth. [6] The structure and release of the song was originally recorded in a G major key and has two contrasting sections. The sections of the verses consist of a series of chords G Bm C and D. Chords for the bridge section The music video for I Started a Joke was directed by Jean-Christophe Averty. It was filmed in Brussels as part of Idea TV Special and features floating question marks on the song while Robin sings. In the film, Maurice is shown playing Rickenbacker 4001 and Vince Melouney plays Gibson ES-335. The song reached #1 in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. In Canada, he spent two weeks as number one on rpm charts. I Started a Joke debuted on #66 in the American magazine Cashbox on December 14, 1968. Robin Gibb's son starred in I Started a Joke shortly after his father died of kidney failure on May 20, 2012. Robin-John Gibb told The Sun: 'When he died we left, they took the equipment and we came back, I took the phone and found I Started a Joke on YouTube and played it. I put the phone on my chest and it was the first time I broke down. I knew the song and its lyrics were perfect for the moment. This song will always have a new meaning for me now.
