D275 Illawarra Coke Company Collection University of Wollongong Archives (WUA) D Collections D275 Illawarra Coke Company Creator: Illawarra Coke Company 1912-2014 Historical Note: The Illawarra Coke Company's (ICC's) site at Corrimal in New South Wales, was in continuous operation for more than a century, and it’s site at Coalcliff was a working industrial site for almost as long. The first ovens at the Corrimal Cokeworks were built in 1911 and commissioned in 1912. Australian Iron & Steel purchased Corrimal Cokeworks and Corrimal Colliery as a package in 1964. In 1969 Bellambi Coal Company purchased the Cokeworks and sourced coal from the South Bulli Mine which they also owned. In 1980 The Bellambi Coal Company Limited was taken over by Australian Coal and Coke Pty Limited and in 1984 Illawarra Coke Company Pty Limited, a subsidiary of Kembla Coal & Coke Pty Limited, purchased Corrimal Coke Company, to add to its operation at Coalcliff. In March 1996 the company was purchased by ICC Holdings Pty Limited. After 99 years of coke-making, the Coalcliff Cokeworks ceased operation in April 2013 and, after producing coke for more than a century, the Corrimal Cokeworks also ceased operation in April 2014. Upon its closure in April 2014, the Company generously donated a range of its historical records to the University of Wollongong.     COKE MAKING IN ILLA WARRA A talk given by Don Reynolds to the Society in March 2006. Coke making began in Illawarra in 1874 by Osborne and Ahearn who built a small battery of circular beehive coke ovens on a site just to the south of Wollongong Harbour, that undertalcing only lasted till about 1890. In 1984 the site was exposed by council when carrying out road works just south east of Belmore Basin; the site was examined and recorded by Brian Rogers and then filled in. In 1884 Thomas Bertram opened the Broker's Nose Coal Company in the escarpment behind what is now CorrimaJ; he built a set of 7 beehive coke ovens (presumably of the circular type) on the northern side of Tarrawanna Road, it appears that these ovens only operated spasmodically. The Southern Coal Company (SCC) was formed in the UK to build a coJliery on the southern slopes ofMt Kembla and a railway from the mine to a jetty they were building in an unprotected bay at Five Islands. They also built a large set of modem rectangular beehive coke ovens alongside their railway near where the Commonwealth Steel stainless steel plant was much later built. This coke ovens plant, which was known as the Australian Coke Making Company, went into service in 1888. The coal mine of the SCC immediately ran into problems due to geological disturbances and the mine was abandoned. They negotiated with Thomas Bertram and leased his Corrimal coal mining and railway facilities in order to meet their commitments. The SCC quickly upgraded the Corrimal facility and began to rail coal to their new jetty and coke works.

    Proceedings of the 17th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2012) Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, 19-21 March 2012 Cadastral Survey for the Sea Cliff Bridge on Lawrence Hargrave Drive by the Roads and Maritime Services Stephen Bennett Registered Land Surveyor, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) [email protected] Jim Ollis Registered Land Surveyor, Roads and Maritime Services (retired) [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper describes the cadastral survey carried out by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to define the new road boundaries to accommodate the Sea Cliff Bridge on Lawrence Hargrave Drive near Clifton, NSW. The survey had to contend with inhospitable terrain and the instability of the geological structure of the Illawarra Escarpment. It is shown how the application of traditional survey techniques, coupled with modern technology, under these difficult conditions, has produced a very comprehensive and rigorous cadastral survey. The paper describes how marks that were over 100 years old were located along the ocean rock shelf, as well as locating rare stone cubes placed as monuments along the old road alignment. The political urgency of reopening the road as quickly as possible meant that design of the property boundaries was left until after completion of the bridge. This required the survey team to liaise with land owners and other stakeholders to determine the optimal final boundaries and extent of the survey. Complicating this was the need to accommodate a bridge suspended over the sea bed, reclamation of the sea bed off the NSW coast and survey requirements to protect sensitive heritage items.
