No. 58 After Fulford and Clarke 2002, 366 1· Thesis Summary The Domestic Dog in the Art and Archaeology of Iron Age and Roman Britain This study investigates the symbolic role of the domestic dog in Iron Age and Roman Britain through contextual analysis of their faunal remains and interpretation of their representations in iconography. Previous studies have highlighted linkages between the species and ideas about death, healing and regeneration (Jenkins 1957, Ross 1967, Toynbee 1973, Henig 1984, Green 1992). Although these connections clearly did exist in the cosmologies of Britain and the Western provinces of Rome, this detailed examination of the evidence seeks to identify reasons why this might have been so. The enquiry was also designed to highlight any previously unnoticed patterns in the dataset that might add a further dimension to our understanding of how the domestic dog was perceived at a symbolic level. It has been established for some time that dogs appear in statistically significant numbers, compared to other species, in the special animal deposits that are a feature of certain Iron Age pits (Grant 1984, Wait 1985, Hill 1995). Dramatic evidence for ritual practice involving animals found at a Romano-British temple complex in Springhead, Kent, and comparable finds from both sacred and secular sites, suggest that domestic dogs were also a favoured sacrifice during this period. -

Conquistare nuovi orizzonti, significava attuare logiche umane, e rendere operative dinamiche sociali che avevano esiti e tempi di maturazione diversi, a seconda della realtà con la quale Roma si confrontava volta per volta. housecovervol2.qxd 17/06/2009 15:50 Page 1 HOUSESTEADS ROMAN FORT HOUSESTEADS ROMAN Housesteads is one of the most HOUSESTEADS ROMAN FORT – important forts on Hadrian’s Wall. Extensive excavations were THE GRANDEST STATION carried out between 1874 and 1981 by Newcastle University. Combining the results with those of excavations done between 1959 and 1961 by Volume 2 The Material Assemblages Durham University, we now have a complete plan of the Alan Rushworth north-east part of the fort. These excavations uncovered principally Buildings XIII, XIV and XV, plus stretches of ram- part between the north and east gates, along with a multitude of features and stratigraphic evidence, revealing not only the sequences but also large finds assemblages. In addition to shedding much light on the material culture of the fort’s occupants and the structural and chronological relationships between various parts of the fort, limited reinvestigation of Building XIV and excavation of the east end of Building XV enabled significant reinterpretation of the origi- nal conclusions reached by the Durham investigators, including some redating of structures. These excavations uncover the full 300-year period during which the fort formed an integral part of the Roman military frontier, for much if not all of that time the base of the cohors I Tungrorum mil- 2Volume Alan Rushworth liaria peditata. Religion and Religious Practices of the Ancient Celts of the Iberian Peninsula Francisco Marco Simón, University of Zaragoza Abstract The aim of this article is to provide an account of the main features of the religious systems documented in Celtic Hispania, focusing on the following: 1) the effects of Romanization on the indigenous religions, with an evaluation of the continuities, ruptures and transformations of traditional religious practices; 2) a geography of the cults of the diverse deities, with particular attention paid to the different sources available, regional variations and relations with the rest of the Romano-Celtic world and the areas of Mediterranean Iberia; 3) a review of the typology of sanctuaries, rituals (particularly sacrifice) and the priesthood; 4) an analysis of the system of values of Hispano-Celtic peoples with respect to hospitality, the war-and-banquet ethos and funeral ideology, including the cosmological elements implied by the available sources of information.
