Chapter 13, Using Fonts with X
13 Using Fonts With X Most X clients let you specify the font used to display text in the window, in menus and labels, or in other text fields. For example, you can choose the font used for the text in fvwm menus or in xterm windows. This chapter gives you the information you need to be able to do that. It describes what you need to know to select display fonts for use with X client applications. Some of the topics the chapter covers are: The basic characteristics of a font. The font-naming conventions and the logical font description. The use of wildcards and aliases for simplifying font specification The font search path. The use of a font server for accessing fonts resident on other systems on the network. The utilities available for managing fonts. The use of international fonts and character sets. The use of TrueType fonts. Font technology suffers from a tension between what printers want and what display monitors want. For example, printers have enough intelligence built in these days to know how best to handle outline fonts. Sending a printer a bitmap font bypasses this intelligence and generally produces a lower quality printed page. With a monitor, on the other hand, anything more than bitmapped information is wasted. Also, printers produce more attractive print with variable-width fonts. While this is true for monitors as well, the utility of monospaced fonts usually overrides the aesthetic of variable width for most contexts in which we’re looking at text on a monitor. This chapter is primarily concerned with the use of fonts on the screen. -

Classifying Arabic Fonts Based on Design Characteristics: PANOSE-A Jehan Janbi A Thesis In the Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Computer Science) at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada July 2016 © Jehan Janbi, 2016 Abstract In desktop publishing, fonts are essential components in each document design. With the development of font design software and tools, there are thousands of digital fonts. Increasing the number of available fonts makes selecting an appropriate font, which best serves the objective of a design, not an intuitive issue. Designers can search for a font like any other file types by using general information such as name and file format. But for document design purposes, the design features or visual characteristics of fonts are more meaningful for designers than font file information. Therefore, representing fonts’ design features by searchable and comparable data would facilitate searching and selecting a desirable font. One solution is to represent a font’s design features by a code composed of several digits. This solution has been implemented as a computerized system called PANOSE-1 for Latin script fonts. PANOSE-1 is a system for classifying and matching typefaces based on design features. It is composed of 10 digits, where each digit represents a specific design feature. It is used within several font management tools as an option for ordering and searching fonts based on their design features. It is also used in font replacement processes when an application or an operating system detects a missing font in an immigrant document or website. -

In the course of the fast speed of technological development everywhere and expanding use of computer based instruction such as online courses, students spend more time on a computer screen than printed media. Texts have been the main element to convey messages. It has also been a significant component for learning. The main goal of this research is to measure the effects of font type and spacing of on screen text and its readability in improving and boosting the learner’s ability to read easily, recall information, and enhance their reading speed and comprehension from on screen text with different topics. The readability of text on screens is necessary to ensure effective engagement in order to enhance the level of students’ readability. For this purpose two font types were selected, Times New Roman (serif) and Verdana (san serif) for the respondents. Verdana was designed only for computer screens display. Readability test on a computer screen was conducted on 30 postgraduate students. Overall, the results showed that there was a significant difference between the readability of serif and san serif font type of on-screen display. The research findings suggest Verdana font type as a better choice in displaying long text for on-screen display.
