Narratives of religious identity: the self-perception of the Jacobite Syrian Christians of Kerala Volume I Sarah Knight Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD in the Study of Religions 2019 Department of the Study of Religions and Philosophies School of Oriental and African Studies University of London Abstract This thesis examines the question of the religious self-definition of the Jacobite Syrian Christian community in Kerala. The leading question is: to what extent does the indigenous narrative of that community about their religious identity differ from existing dominant historical accounts? It examines texts in Malayalam from the Jacobite Syrian Christians, particularly the unpublished 18th century Mathai Vettikkunnel manuscript, in order to investigate the narrative of their religious identity, in the context of existing scholarly discourse.

This, the Seventy-Fifth issue of the Catholic Directory of India, Burma and Ceylon, goes out under the happy auspices of a Blessing from the Visitor Apostolic to India. His Excellency the Most Revel. Alexis H. Lepicier, O.S.M., D D ., has very graciously blessed the Compiler and all those who have co-operated with him in bringing out the Directory. That this issue has merited in any special manner this courteous treat ment, is, to the Compiler, a matter of doubt, for he is fully aware that in spite of every effort at accuracy, errors and misprints have crept in. Yet, he feels sure that this Volume, like its, renowned predecessors, goes forth on its annual mission of usefulness and interest to a large number of Catholics of India, Burma and Ceylon. In the name of his Co-operators and in his own name, the Compiler thanks His Excellency the Visitor Apostolic for his very kind thought and Blessing. s It is a pleasant duty also to the Compiler to thank all those who have helped him in getting out this issue, though he has also to witzs/on confess that a few have failed in submitting >the usual sacred returns.

Upon the writer of this Preface devolves the two-fold duty of introducing the Direc tory of the year to the public, and of apologis ing at the same time for its shortcomings. The first is by far the easier task of the two, for the simple reason that the Directory is now in its seventy-fourth year and is quite capable of chaperoning itself. By its regular annual appearance for the past 74 years it has secured a well-merited place in the refe rence library of every one who pretends to have any business with the Hierarchy of India, Burma and Ceylon—a place which, in the present order of things, is undisputed. With this assurance it bows itself into notice ^ again this year. 3 1 he second task, however, is slightly more difficult, since it evolves the odious task Ivof apologising ‘ by shifting the blame on to another.’ The Compiler is at the best only a Compiler and has to depend both for the amount and the correctness of his informa- fition upon the sympathetic co-operation of | the various dioceses throughout the length ^and breadth of this vast country. Thanks, .iihowever, tjo the ready co-operation of all the sj dioceses—save one—the necessary and latest information has been obtained and recorded.

P. THOMAS. Censor Dcputatui. Imprimatur: * E. MEDERLET. s.c., Archbishop o f Madras. Madras, April 1929. PREFACE. The compilation of the Catholic Directory for India, Burma and Ceylon has again been a very gratifying task. The more so, because the invaluable co-opera tion of the Ordinaries of the divers Dioceses, which has been given so whole-heartedly, has shown us that this little annual is appreciated in the various parts of India. W e take this opportunity to thank all those who have given the necessary information, relating to the different Mission-centres. W e own a debt of gratitude to those who have made such useful suggestions for the further improvement of the Directory and which embodied in this year’s edition have made our little book a source of valuable information. A few additional items of general interest reached us too late to be related in our present edition, but we assure those who so kindly sent us these items that we will carefully keep them in our files to be made use of next year. We sincerely hope that the Directory will give fto all the required information and we confidently look forward to the assistance and co-operation of all who find this Directory useful.
