The church planted in India had to face many vicissitudes and had to depend upon foreign traders and missions to keep its apostolicity and catholicity. Indian Church had its participation in the first ecumenical council of Nicea (AD 325) through bishop John of Persia. This council entrusted the affairs of eastern churches to the see of Antioch and later the immigration from Edessa enriched the church in all aspects of ecclesiastical necessities. This Syrian enrichment continued throughout the history. The translation of holy relics of St. Thomas from Indian to Edessa, the visits and settlement of Syrian missionaries, bringing of Syrian Crosses, the travels of Joseph the Indian to Lisbon and Rome and his testiomials. etc, are rays of light that beams light to the dark ages of its history. Post Portuguese period can be divided into several stages 1) Coonan cross and restoration of the Jacobite faith 2) Era of the relation with the CMS 3) Formation of the reformation party in the Church 4) Royal court judgment and the after effects. 5) Formation of the independent orthodox group. 6) Resurgence of the Syrian Orthodox Church. This book is the study on the period of the relations with the CMS Missionaries. This study is an academic dissertation prepared by Prof. O. M. Mathew. After his meritorious service as a professor in one of the colleges affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, he continued his religious studies at the Mar Thoma Vidyanikethan, Changanaserry. This thesis is an outcome of the partial fulfilment of his studies in Theology and ecclesiology. Prof. Mathew is a talented linguist and an erudite scholar. He has covered the period of study in a very scholarly and unprejudiced manner. I hope the students of Church History will benefit much from him. Some usages in this book like ‘East Syrian’, ‘Monophysites’, ‘Pentarchy’, ‘Secondary sacraments’ etc. are to be understood in the context to which it is used by the author. The Syrian Orthodox Church holds its own interpretation and meaning of these words. Mor Adai Study Centre is indebted to him for entrusting the task of publishing this work in a book form. We take this as a duty for the benefit of the holy mother church. May God bless him and us all. While their goal was to help the church, their activities increased British power in the community. The results of CMS involvement included increasing interference of British officials in matters internal to the Malankara Church (e.g., episcopal succession), tacit recognition of the authority of colonial courts to resolve disputes in the church, and the fragmentation of the St. Thomas Christian community. For example, Mathews Mar Athanasius, Titus I Mar Thoma, Abraham Mar Thoma, Alexander Mar Thoma, or lay persons such as K.K. Kuruvilla, C.P. Mathew and K.N. Daniel have all played a role in the reforming of the Mar Thoma Church. But there is one person that all these aforementioned persons would likely regard as the key reformer in the history of the Mar Thoma Church; the person who initiated the reformation movement that eventually formed the Mar Thoma Church: Pulakunnathu Abraham Malpan. The story of this man, Abraham Malpan (“Malpan” is a Syriac term for professor), is a difficult one to tell. The literature available is limited. He himself did not write much, if anything at all, about himself or what he believed. If he did, these writings have not been found. Yet, despite the scarcity of information on the Malpan, he has a legacy and tradition that continues in the church to this day. However, due to the many unknowns regarding him, his story has likely been exaggerated in some parts, perhaps even fabricated in some others, yet certainly there would have to be truths found in his tradition as well.     CHAPTER I CHRISTIANITY IN KERALA: TRACING ANTECEDENTS Introduction This chapter is an analysis of the early history of Christianity in Kerala. In the initial part it attempts to trace the historical background of Christianity from its origin to the end of seventeenth century. The period up to the colonial period forms the first part after which the history of the colonial part is given. This chapter also tries to examine how colonial forces interfered in the life of Syrian Christians and how it became the foremost factor for the beginning of conflicts. It tried to explain about the splits that happened in the community because of the interference of the Portuguese. It likewise deals with the relation of Dutch with the Syrian Christian community. It also discusses the conflict between the Jesuit and Carmelite missionaries. History of Christianity in Kerala in the Pre-Colonial Period Kerala, which is situated on the south west coast of Peninsular India, is one of the oldest centers of Christianity in the world. This coast was popularly known as Malabar. The presence of Christian community in the pre-colonial period of Kerala is an unchallenged reality. It began to appear here from the early days of Christendom.1 But the exact period in which Christianity was planted in Malabar, by whom, how or under what conditions, cannot be said with any confidence. However historians have offered unimportant guesses in the light of traditional legends and sources. The origin of Christianity was subject to wide enquiry and research by scholars. Different contradictory theories have been formulated by historians, religious leaders, and politicians on the Christian proselytizing in India.

While retaining the essential elements and the frame work of the Samajam Curriculum, the lessons and stories are made more conducive to our situations and challenges. The overall theme is “Being God’s People in God’s World” Summary of Work in Three Years: The work for the curriculum started in 2002 soon after the publication of the revised edition of the book, “The Mar Thoma Church: Our Foundation and Vision (CSS Publication, 2001) and the special issue of Messenger in January 2002 which explained the development of Sunday Schools in North America. The Diocesan Sunday School Council in 2002 entrusted the task of the new curriculum with Dr. T. M. Thomas, who had been active for the growth of the Sunday schools even from the beginning of the Diocese. (He was the first convener of the Sunday school committee formed at the Zonal Assembly of 1982, Philadelphia, presided by our late Suffragan Bishop Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Athanasius).     REPORT ON ACTIVITIES IN CREATING AWARENESS AND COOPERATION AMONG ORTHODOX AND EVANGELICAL CHURCHES IN INDIA Fr. Dr. Jossi Jacob Holy Trinity Theological College, Addis Ababa The history of the interactions between the Orthodox Church in India and the Evangelical Traditions goes back to early nineteenth century. In spite of the ruptures and tremors of the past the relationship and interactions had reaped mutual benefits too. We could trace in-numerous events of mutual interactions which happened in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first centuries. Several of the events had gone without any written records. I would like to particularly highlight the travels made by two of our luminary bishops to the western countries in the first half of the twentieth century. Those visionary leaders of the Church travelled extensively in the western European countries to make contacts and interactions with the Churches of Protestant traditions. In turn they had visitors from these respective Churches visiting the Malankara Orthodox Church and staying in the monasteries which these two bishops had found. There attempts were before the formal inception of the international ecumenical bodies. Later on the founding of the World Council of Churches, in the inception of which the Orthodox Church in India has played a role too, has added momentum to the fraternal ties between the traditions. Exploring to the early part of the 19th century, it is made clear that the cooperation in the beginning was mainly made in publishing the Holy Scripture, and in promoting western form of education in Keralite1 society. Later it has developed into theological higher education.
