Abraham Malpan By: Alex Kolath Date: 7 February 2008 Revised: 15 August 2010 1 Introduction In the history of the Mar Thoma Church there are many notable and influential persons that helped reform the church to what it is today. For example, Mathews Mar Athanasius, Titus I Mar Thoma, Abraham Mar Thoma, Alexander Mar Thoma, or lay persons such as K.K. Kuruvilla, C.P. Mathew and K.N. Daniel have all played a role in the reforming of the Mar Thoma Church. But there is one person that all these aforementioned persons would likely regard as the key reformer in the history of the Mar Thoma Church; the person who initiated the reformation movement that eventually formed the Mar Thoma Church: Pulakunnathu Abraham Malpan. The story of this man, Abraham Malpan (“Malpan” is a Syriac term for professor), is a difficult one to tell. The literature available is limited. He himself did not write much, if anything at all, about himself or what he believed. If he did, these writings have not been found. Yet, despite the scarcity of information on the Malpan, he has a legacy and tradition that continues in the church to this day. However, due to the many unknowns regarding him, his story has likely been exaggerated in some parts, perhaps even fabricated in some others, yet certainly there would have to be truths found in his tradition as well. In this paper, we will look at the story of Abraham Malpan based on the information available. His history, his personality and his role in the reformation will be examined. -

CHAPTER I CHRISTIANITY IN KERALA: TRACING ANTECEDENTS Introduction This chapter is an analysis of the early history of Christianity in Kerala. In the initial part it attempts to trace the historical background of Christianity from its origin to the end of seventeenth century. The period up to the colonial period forms the first part after which the history of the colonial part is given. This chapter also tries to examine how colonial forces interfered in the life of Syrian Christians and how it became the foremost factor for the beginning of conflicts. It tried to explain about the splits that happened in the community because of the interference of the Portuguese. It likewise deals with the relation of Dutch with the Syrian Christian community. It also discusses the conflict between the Jesuit and Carmelite missionaries. History of Christianity in Kerala in the Pre-Colonial Period Kerala, which is situated on the south west coast of Peninsular India, is one of the oldest centers of Christianity in the world. This coast was popularly known as Malabar. The presence of Christian community in the pre-colonial period of Kerala is an unchallenged reality. It began to appear here from the early days of Christendom.1 But the exact period in which Christianity was planted in Malabar, by whom, how or under what conditions, cannot be said with any confidence. However historians have offered unimportant guesses in the light of traditional legends and sources. The origin of Christianity was subject to wide enquiry and research by scholars. Different contradictory theories have been formulated by historians, religious leaders, and politicians on the Christian proselytizing in India. -

I am glad that the new curriculum is ready to be introduced in 2006. Here we are in the process of a transition from Cokesbury to the Mar Thoma Sunday School Samajam Curriculum. While retaining the essential elements and the frame work of the Samajam Curriculum, the lessons and stories are made more conducive to our situations and challenges. The overall theme is “Being God’s People in God’s World” Summary of Work in Three Years: The work for the curriculum started in 2002 soon after the publication of the revised edition of the book, “The Mar Thoma Church: Our Foundation and Vision (CSS Publication, 2001) and the special issue of Messenger in January 2002 which explained the development of Sunday Schools in North America. The Diocesan Sunday School Council in 2002 entrusted the task of the new curriculum with Dr. T. M. Thomas, who had been active for the growth of the Sunday schools even from the beginning of the Diocese. (He was the first convener of the Sunday school committee formed at the Zonal Assembly of 1982, Philadelphia, presided by our late Suffragan Bishop Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Athanasius). Preliminary discussions were held at the Family Conference of Dallas, 2002. -

In his Epistle to the Hebrews the Apostle St. Paul says: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God, consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith”. (Hebrew 13:7). Our Holy Apostolic church has always received and remembered the true messengers of Christ. All Saints were first recognized and accepted in the localities where they lived, worked and died. Later on, as the fame of their saintly lives spread out and as more and more people began to seek their intercession before God, their names were included in the prayers and Holy Services of our Church. We recall our Apostolic Bull No.E265/87 dated October 20, 1987 whereby we permitted you to include the name of St. Thomas the Apostle in the fourth diptych (Thubden) and the names of Patriarch St. Elias III, Maphriyono Saint Baselios Yeldo and Metropolitan St. Gregorios of Parumala in the fifth Thubden of the Holy Eucharist Service. Further by our Apostolic bull No.E71/00, dated April 4, 2000, we had declared the former delegates of the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East, Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel of Parur, and the Late Mor Osthatheos Sleeba as Saints. -

Directly opposite facing the congregation is the wall with the new painting of the Apostles. The journey of faith we all make begins with the teaching of the Apostles, leads us through Baptism, toward altar and the Apostles guiding us by pulpit and altar to Christ himself pictured so clearly on the three-fold front of the Tabernacle. The lively multi-experiences of all those on the journey are reflected in the multi-colors of the pillars. W e are all connected by Christ with whom we journey, He the vine, we the branches, uniting us in faith, hope, and love connected to the Apostles and one another. O ur newly redone interior, rededicated on June 16, 2013, was the result of a collaboration between our many parishioners, the Intelligent Design Group (architect), the artistic designs of New Guild Studios, and the management and supervision of many craftsmen and technicians by Landau Building Company. I n March 2014, the Landau Building Company, in a category with four other projects, won a first place award from the Master Builders Association in the area of “Excellence in Craftsmanship by a General Contractor” for their work on the renovations at St. Ursula. A fter the extensive renovation to the church, our parish community began asking questions about the Apostles on the Sanctuary wall and wishing to know who they were. -

We have great pleasure to be with you this day. Our St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Kandanad, has always upheld the true faith and practices of our Holy Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch. Even in the midst of many hardships you have remained loyal to 1 our Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East. This church has a prominent place in the history of our whole Church in India. Patriarchal Delegates sent from the Holy See of Antioch have visited and stayed at this church. The mortal remains of the late lamented Maphrian Mor Baselios Sacralla, whom we have declared a Saint, are entombed at this church. This tomb is a source of blessing for those who seek his intercession. The blessed tomb of the fourth native Metropolitan of our Holy Church in India – Mor Thoma IV - is also situated at this church. Two of our present Metropolitans – Their Eminences Mor Ivanios Mathews of Kandanad and Mor Clemis Kuriakose of Idukki – are members of this parish. Our beloved Church Secretary Bar Eto Mheero Commander Thambu George Thukalan also belongs to this parish. This parish is also the mother-parish of other parishes in and around Kandanad. -
