It has unity and diversity, but perhaps above all the ability to integrate both. Few countries in the world have such a diverse and ancient culture as India. The Dravidians had a culture of their own before the arrival of the Aryans, who themselves were a mixture of different cultures (e.g., the Greco-Roman affinity to the Aryan Sanskrit language indicates that the Aryans belonged to a Pre-Indo-European race). After the Aryans several other nations came: Persians (521-485 B.C.), Greeks (327-325 B.C.), Huns (454 A.D), Arabs (712 A.D.), Mughals (1230 A.D.), Turks (1398 A.D.), Portuguese (1498 A.D.), French (1564 A.D.), and British (1639). All of these groups left something of their legacy in India, so that today it has a unique variety of cultures in its thinking as well as in its mode of life. India has a peculiar power to absorb the best from these cultures and thought patterns. Its attitude of tolerance of all religions has contributed to synthesizing the positive qualities of its religions, cultures, and thinking. Indian culture is thus a unity in diversity, a harmony of contrasts. This has been traced to the following: firstly, a sense of unity of all life as the expression of an unseen reality, both immanent and transcendent; secondly, a desire for synthesis combining apparently disconnected fragments in life and experience in an essential unity; thirdly, a recognition of the sufferings and sorrows of life, with an attempt to remove these; fourthly, a feeling for the sacredness of life. This is expressed in the concept of non-injury (ahimsa) to all creatures when considered negatively and in the concepts of compassion for all (karuna) and service of humanity (maitri) when considered positively. Finally, there is great tolerance for other beliefs and points- of-view. Yet, India is also a land of amazing diversity for all this has evolved around the Vedas of Hinduism and the related spiritual texts of Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jainism, Saivism, Vaishnavism, Judaism, Parsism, Islam, Sikhism and Christianity. In addition, the philosophical systems of India, the social justice movements, communism, rationalism and radical humanism also have influenced its development. Caste divisions have been perpetuated as well, which give diversity and, of course, bring divisions to Indian culture. Hence, Indian culture is unique in its genius for wedding the deepest unity with the broadest diversity in an integral way of life. This volume attempts to penetrate that genius in a sequence of four parts beginning with an introductory exploration of the Indian cultural tradition, followed by a philosophical anthropology and a socio-cultural analysis, and concluding in studies of culture and religion in earlier and in vi George F. McLean modern India. Despite all the diversity, India survives as one, free and democratic due to its underlying and unifying spiritual culture. Hence, this study entitled Identity, Creativity and Modernization: Perspectives on Indian Cultural Traditions, attempts to unfold the nature of Indian culture by clarifying its identity, by critiquing those elements in Indian cultural tradition that need a reassessment, and finally by highlighting those factors of Indian cultural tradition that have contributed the modernization of Indian society and the building of today’s modern India. The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy wishes to express its gratitude to Professors Dharmendra Goel, Kamal Chand Sogani, Geeta Manaktala, A. Raghuramaraju, R. McLean INTRODUCTION This volume entitled Identity, Creativity and Modernization: Perspectives on Indian Cultural Tradition consists of essays that represent the different ways of understanding Indian cultural tradition. In general, these essays survey the Indian cultural tradition through different systems of Indian philosophical schools and their later avataras, besides considering the structural components of Indian society and its dynamics. Thus, this project intends to explore the identity of Indian cultural tradition, to critique it as it is manifested in different systems of Indian thought and worldviews so as to unfold its creative dimensions, and to highlight those aspects of Indian cultural tradition that have contributed for the building up of modern India. In order to present the theme with clarity we divide this volume into four parts. We briefly consider below the titles of each of these parts and what each part attempts to do in elaborating the theme of this volume. PART I. INTRODUCTORY EXPLORATIONS INTO INDIAN CULTURAL TRADITION The first part serves as an introduction to the whole volume. The first of the two articles that comprises this part by Geeta Manaktala is a methodological introduction in understanding culture by using philosophical categories and approaches, while the second article by Sebastian Velassery gives an introductory analysis of Indian cultural tradition by considering some of its salient features. Now, we briefly consider what these two papers unfold in introducing different aspects of Indian cultural tradition. Geeta Manaktala, in the paper entitled “Culture and Philosophy: A Methodological Introduction” attempts to explore the relationship between culture and specifically the role of philosophy in genuine understanding of culture and its values. To accomplish this task, the paper first intends to throw some light on the notion of culture itself. The notion of culture is explored by unfolding its general and specific meanings, by highlighting the changes that has taken place in the notion of culture due to changing times, and by considering a historical development of the notion of culture. Then, the paper examines man in relation to culture and explores how changing understanding of culture has challenged the fundamentals of the spiritual identity of the human person. Though man is called to integrate the inner being and outer environment of culture, he realizes that he himself is fragmented and divided because he is conditioned by culture. The commerce of consumerism and changed values threaten to further this divide within the human person, so much so that he is challenged to live his nature and identity as a spiritual entity. Finally, the paper takes up for consideration the role of philosophy and its relationship to culture and how this interaction can uphold significant

    Abraham Malpan By: Alex Kolath Date: 7 February 2008 Revised: 15 August 2010 1 Introduction In the history of the Mar Thoma Church there are many notable and influential persons that helped reform the church to what it is today. For example, Mathews Mar Athanasius, Titus I Mar Thoma, Abraham Mar Thoma, Alexander Mar Thoma, or lay persons such as K.K. Kuruvilla, C.P. Mathew and K.N. Daniel have all played a role in the reforming of the Mar Thoma Church. But there is one person that all these aforementioned persons would likely regard as the key reformer in the history of the Mar Thoma Church; the person who initiated the reformation movement that eventually formed the Mar Thoma Church: Pulakunnathu Abraham Malpan. The story of this man, Abraham Malpan (“Malpan” is a Syriac term for professor), is a difficult one to tell. The literature available is limited. He himself did not write much, if anything at all, about himself or what he believed. If he did, these writings have not been found. Yet, despite the scarcity of information on the Malpan, he has a legacy and tradition that continues in the church to this day. However, due to the many unknowns regarding him, his story has likely been exaggerated in some parts, perhaps even fabricated in some others, yet certainly there would have to be truths found in his tradition as well. In this paper, we will look at the story of Abraham Malpan based on the information available. His history, his personality and his role in the reformation will be examined.

On the contrary, it asserts that the universe has always existed and will always exist in exact adherence to the laws of the cosmos. There is nothing but infinity both in the past and in the future. The world of reality or universe consists of two classes of objects: · Living beings - conscious, soul, chetan, or jiva · Non-living objects - unconscious, achetan, or ajiva Non-living objects are further classified into five categories; Matter (Pudgal), Space (Akas), Medium of motion (Dharmastikay), Medium of rest (Adharmastikay), Time (Kal or Samay). The five non-living entities together with the living being, totaling six are aspects of reality in Jainism. They are known as six universal entities, or substances, or realities. These six entities of the universe are eternal but continuously undergo countless changes. During the changes, nothing is lost or destroyed. Everything is recycled into another form. Concept of Reality A reality or an entity is defined to have an existence, which is known as Sat or truth. Each entity continuously undergoes countless changes. During this process the old form (size, shape, etc.) of an entity is destroyed, the new form is originated. The form of a substance is called Paryaya. In the midst of modification of a substance, its certain qualities remain unchanged (permanence). The unchanged qualities of a substance are collectively known as Dravya. Hence, each entity (substance) in the universe has three aspects: · Origination - Utpada · Destruction - Vyaya · Permanence - Dhruvya Both Dravya (substance) and Paryaya (mode or form) are inseparable from an entity.

Siddhasena Gaˆi’s È¥kå 1. Of the commentaries to be studied this is by far the most recent one. It comments on the Tattvårtha SËtra and the Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya, and therefore postdates both. More helpful information for determining its date consists in the mention of Dharmak¥rti and his Pramåˆavinißcaya in the commentary on TS 5.31 (I, p. 397). Dharmak¥rti lived in the seventh century at the latest (about 600-660 A.D. according to Frauwallner 1961: 137f.; Lindtner 1980 argues for ca. 530-600). Siddhasena Gaˆi lived after this. He appears to be referred to under the name ‘Gandhahastin’ in Í¥lå∫ka’s commentary on the Ócårå∫ga SËtra (p. 1 and 55 [82]), because ‘Gandhahastin’ is used as a name of Siddhasena Gaˆi in several works (Sukhlal 1974: Intr. p. 55 f.). Í¥lå∫ka wrote in the middle of the 9th century or soon after that (Kapadia 1941: 197). Siddhasena Gaˆi wrote before this. A further specification of Siddhasena Gaˆi’s date is possible, as follows. The Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya on sËtra 9.22 explains the word pråyaßcitta ‘atonement’ and makes in that connection the following observation (II, p. 254): cit¥ sañjñånavißuddhyo˙ dhåtu˙ | tasya cittam iti bhavati ni∑†håntam auˆådikaµ ca | “The root is ‘citÁ in [the senses] “ideation” and “purification”’. INTRODUCTION: TEXTUAL SOURCES] Question: Many sutras and sastras say that it takes three kalpas to become a Buddha; on what grounds do you base the principle you have now set up that one may become a Buddha in this very body? Answer: The Tathagata has spoken in this way in the esoteric collection. Question: What are the sutras which say this? Answer: The Vajrasekhara-sutra says: One who cultivates this samadhi immediately realizes the enlightenment of the Buddha. ('This samadhi' means the samadhi of Mahavairocana, the noble monarch crowned by the single letter [bhrum].) And it says further: If there is a being who receives this teaching and diligently cultivates it during the four watches of the day and of the night, then in the present world he will realize and attain the pramudita-bhumi and, after sixteen lives, complete enlight- enment. For example, Dr. E. Frauwallner points out that there are two Buddhist philosophers who bear the name Vasubandu." Both of these philosophers are believed to have written important works that are attributed to that name. A similar situation can sometimes be found in the Jaina tradition, and sometimes the situation arises even when the philosophers are in different traditions. For exam- ple, there are two Indian philosophers who are called Haribhadra, one in the Jain tradition, and one in the Buddhist tradition. This paper will argue that one philosopher named Siddhasena, the author of the famous Jaina work, the Sammatitarka, should be distinguished from another philosopher with the same name, the author of the Nvavavatara, a work which occupies an equally important position in Jaina philosophy- 2) One reason to argue that the authors of these works are two different persons is that the works are written in two different languages : the Sammatitarka in Prakrit ; the Nvavavatara in Sanskrit. In the Jaina tradition, it is extremely unusual for the same author to write philosophical works in different languages, the usual languages being either Prakrit or Sanskrit, but not both. Of course, the possibility of one author using two languages cannot be completely eliminated. For example, the Jaina philosopher Haribhadra uses both Prakrit and Sanskrit. But even Haribhadra limits himself to one language when writing a philosophical .work : his philosophical works are all written in Sanskrit, and he uses Prakrit for all of his non-philosophical works.

I The Jaina outlook on ontology and its philosophy of knowledge can be comprehended under realism, and in this regard, it shares a lot of views and ideas with Nyaya-Vai5e$ika and realist schools. A schematic representation of Jainism may be given below in order to put its perspective amongst other philosophical views. Knowledge I Realism Idealism Direct Presentation Represent tion I Nyaya Mlmamsa Jaina Samkhya Sautantrika Vedanta Yogacara Jainism is distinguished by having its sources in the Bhagavati, and Agama literature. It is classified as a non-Vedic or heterodox school of thought, but nonetheless Jainism is a mok?asastra, the science of salvation. The path for spiritual progress, aiming at the final goal of liberation is the central tone of the Agamas. The Jainas arrange the knowledge of the world under two pairs of contrasted alternatives, jiva and ajiva. These are complementary aspects of reality, each of which suggests the other by a dialectical necessity and combines with the other into one more complex conception. These two contrasted alternatives are but two conditions of thought: all thinking implies a subject which thinks, the cogitative principle or soul. But as all thinking is thinking of something, it means that it requires a material on which the thought activity is exercised, it implies an object which is discriminated and understood by thought. The Jainas speak of knowledge in five different forms: (a) Mati or that form of knowledge by which a jiva cognizes an object through the operation of the sense-organs, all hindrances to the formation of such knowledge being removed.
