For the past 15 years, the Sunshine District has sponsored Harmony Explosion Camp for Florida high school students and their music educators. After the success of our first co-ed camp last year we have decided to make this a co-ed camp from now on. Our 16th annual event was our largest camp to date. Over 200 students, teachers, chaperones, teaching quartets and clinicians attended! Our lead clinicians were Tony De Rosa and Debbie Cleveland. Our teaching quartets were “Sunny Boys,” “Windsor” and the “Buzz.” The students experienced the very best of every aspect of Barbershop singing! Thursday night we showed the movie “American Harmony,” which was particularly special with Tony’s involvement in the camp, and that “” attended camp last year. The kids loved the movie! Before the Friday Night Ensemble Competition, Tony brought over the “Voices of Liberty” to sing for the kids. Needless to say they were treated like Rock Stars!! A special thanks to Tony for all he did for this camp! We are lucky to call him one of our own. The Saturday evening show was nothing short of magical! Both the boys and girls choruses were awesome. The combined chorus number was a moment to remember. Also on the show were 2014 International competitor “The Society” and the “Humdingers” (aka “Dapper Dans”). Adding “Sunny Boys” (current 2nd place International Collegiate Quartet) the “Buzz” (2005 SAI Queens of Harmony), “Windsor” (an amazing new young SAI quartet), “Backstreet 4” and the top three student ensembles from the Friday night ensemble contest to the program, one can easily see unique caliber of the show. Anyway, when the delayed webcast was finally Behind the Scenes available, I had all the score sheets in hand. This by Ed McKenzie meant that I could watch each contest and know ahead of time how the performance I was about to see was scored. The way the delayed broadcast Delayed Viewing is set up, the quartets are listed in the order of performance and you can click on each one, skip This year I decided to try the delayed viewing option them, or just let the webcast run and watch all on the webcast for the international contest. It was the interviews with participants that fill the gaps about half the cost of watching it live, which this between performances. I watched them in order year getting it live included also watching it delayed. with the Collegiate Contest. I didn’t read the details very carefully and thought I would be able to watch the contest sessions Then I realized that, since I had the score sheets, I sooner than the Wednesday of the following week. I could watch them in reverse scoring order. That justified this in my mind when I realized it, since the is, I could start at the bottom of the scoring stack chorus wasn’t rehearsing until the following Monday and work my way up the chain. That way, each and I could watch everything before then and be performance would be better than the previous familiar with what happened at the contest. one for each contest. Since the Quarter-Finals were in two separate sessions, I had to go through That worked out fine until the Sunday after the score sheets and mark which quartets were in International. Our church always does a patriotic the first session. The remainder, by default, were Independence Day service and this year we invited in the second session. Since I couldn’t sit still and the “Liberty Voices” to sing in the program. I was watch both sessions at the same time anyway, I delighted to see Tiffany Coburn on the platform with just worked my way up the scoring chain for each us. They were out in the lobby after each service session. Worked out great. In fact, it was better than “meeting and greeting” and selling CD’s. the live contest, as I could watch 10 or 15 quartets, take a break and come back. With score sheets in I waited my turn to talk to Tiffany and she knew me, hand , I could continue to watch increasingly better but not from where. I introduced myself and said performances regardless of how many I watched at I was from the Heralds and our church choir. She a time. immediately acknowledged me and asked if I had seen the live webcast of the contest, because she Did the same thing for the chorus contest. had. I had to admit I had it on delay and she asked Worked out great. I am considering doing me if I had seen the AIC show. I also had to admit this again. Especially if we get the bid that I hadn’t seen that. She said that Tony had for next year. That way, I can see all arranged the whole show and directed the chorus. the contest sessions I missed while in I said I would have made a point to watch if I had the pattern. I understand there is a known that! reduced price for those who are at International. Tiffany then expressed confusion about the scoring, since “Main Street” and “Forefront” each were announced as having scored 89.1%. As I had seen the score sheet, I explained that the raw scores were 8021 for “Forefront” and 8015 for “Main Street.” When reduced to percentages, they were the same. When I Click for all the got home, I found her website and sent her the score scores! sheet that showed the top ten and how they scored in each session. She sent a nice reply. e The e Tampa Tampa HERALD HERALD Page 20 July 2014 The Tampa HERALD Page 21 July 2014
