2015 ANNUAL REPORT Welcome to Harmony Foundation’s first Harmony Foundation annual report! International In my time as Chair of HFI’s Board of Trustees, I have watched the Foundation grow and evolve into a world-class organization, which excels at bringing the gift of singing to Staff the world. The dedication of the Foundation’s Jim Clark staff and trustees is unparalleled, as is the Regional Director of Development generosity of our donors. We have much to Carolyn Faulkenberry be proud of but much work still to do. Summer 2010 Let Freedom Ring! Barbershopping in Philly by Craig Rigg [The following report is a personal observation and does not reflect the views of the Society or the Illinois District. With luck we’ll face only a few lawsuits.] There’s this moment in the recent barbershop documentary Amer- ican Harmony. Jeff Oxley looks at a monitor as Vocal Spectrum appears on stage during the 2006 quartet contest, singing “Cruella DeVille.” He turns and shakes his head, saying, “The So- ciety’s changing, man.” His sentiments pretty much sum up what the 2010 International Convention and Con- tests at Philadelphia was all about. There’s been a changing of the guard. First, let's take the quartet contest. By now, everybody knows that Storm Front finally got the gold (after much cajoling and trash talk). They are the first comedy oriented quartet since FRED to achieve the pinnacle of quartetting. There’s no doubt these guys can sing; they’re Singing scores put them in second place, bested only by Old School (with Illinois's own Joe Krones at bass). In fact, Old School led after the semi-finals by only 17 points, and OS had won each of the first two rounds. All they had to do was maintain their lead and the gold was theirs. Not to be (a phrase you'll hear again later.) So what did Storm Front do that made the difference? Well, a combination of factors proba- bly did it. First, SF staged one heck of an innovative final set. Their first song, with a bit of mock- ing of Old School and up-and-coming Ringmasters from Sweden, lamented their struggle to reach the top. -

MINDSET OF A SUCCESSFUL QUARTETTER Barbershop Parts Study - Playlist Observations Click here: "Parts Study" Spotify Playlist Quartet Information & Listen Fors 1) “After Today” - Remake of the Acoustix version (BHS champs early 90’s.) • Attention to coming in and out of unison, solos and vocal gymnastics in all parts. • Smoothness with which parts hand off the melody to one another, beginning with a very melodic bass. • Color of the releases in all singers, along with a very consistent lift that does not sound contrived at all. • Vocal flexibility - These are all gals in their mid to late 50’s…all parts. While you can hear the maturity (and the benefit of having that experience), you can also hear a vibrance that comes only with vocal freedom. 2) “If I Were a Bell” • Flexibility and lightness (an ease with the vocal approach.) • Strong sprinkle of personality and FUN in it. • Notice the smoothness of the tenor and how she “tucks into” the chords and how she takes on the solo part more like a lead rather than an ensemble (as they all do in this quartet), which are very tightly voiced (notes close together to each other) • The chromatics around 1:40 are accurate and balanced well through all voice parts. The Buzz The • Again, the handoff of parts in shared melody is seamless. They ring, they buzz, hence their name. Listen for SAI Queens the chords to sound rich and full. Conventions in barbershop like bell chords, lead-ins, echoes, etc. are handled with aplomb and consistency. 3) “Back in Business” • This quartet is well-versed in all aspects of our craft. -

SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL Barbershop Harmony Lesson Plan A Unique Genre of Music Originating in the United States Grade Level: 6 - 12 Suggested Time Allowance: 1 hour Objectives: 1. Listen to and analyze short samples of music in the barbershop genre. 2. Consider the voice parts and ensembles types (quartet vs. chorus) within the genre. 3. Discuss the origin of barbershop music. 4. Experiment with “tag singing” a traditional way of sharing barbershop music. Materials Required: Computer with Internet access, projector, speakers (or SMART Board) Introduce Topic: Have you ever heard of barbershop harmony? Have you ever seen a quartet or a chorus of all men or all women that sing popular songs a cappella, in four-part harmony? Do you think of it as something your grandparents or great grandparents would enjoy? Does the thought of barbershop harmony evoke thoughts of straw hats, striped vests and canes? If so, you’re thinking of the early days of barbershop. Like all music styles, barbershop harmony has expanded, adapted and evolved over time. As each generation exerts influence and takes new risks with a music style, the style continues to grow and change. What fun would it be if no one took any risks? We would never have any variety. What if Elvis hadn’t pushed the envelope? Would we have any of the current pop/rap/rock/heavy metal styles that we have today? Everything that we know today came from somewhere or someone long ago. Barbershop harmony is no different and today it is a unique, American art form. Dixie Town Crier Dixie’s monthly chapter newsletter dedicated to the original town crier, Chuck Witherspoon February 2013 Volume 5, Issue 2 David Crenshaw reporting AVP entertains Georgia Governor Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and his wife Sandra hosted the Atlanta Vocal Project at the Governor's Mansion on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, to perform for De- partment of Transportation officials from around the country. AVP dined with the Governor and VIP guests before entertaining the crowd with a rousing set of our fa- vorite Christmas and other songs, which elicited a heartfelt standing ovation. P a g e 2 Dixie Town Crier Jim Moore reporting Georgia Spirit earns excellent rating at International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival Georgia Spirit represented Atlanta Vocal Project, Stone Mountain, and other Atlanta area barbershoppers very well in Orlando at the 6th annual International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival. They earned an Excellent rating, scored 73.7, and placed 3rd in their age plateau. They also were third in voting for “Audience Favorite” out of 19 choruses. The 27-man chorus was made up of 8 singers from Calhoun, Georgia and 16 from Atlanta, including 7 with AVP or Stone Mountain ties. Three singers were from Florida. Co-directors were Clay Hine and Tim Brooks. The group sang “Who Put the Bomp,” “Georgia On My Mind,” and “I Got Rhythm.” The trip was made on a brand new 54-passenger ex- ecutive charter bus that be- gan at 6 am in Calhoun. A pick up stop was made in Atlanta and then continued to Orlando, where the boys arrived at 3:30.
