He began studying piano at age five and singing in school and church choirs during middle school. Derek graduated from Western Carolina University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education (Voice and Conducting). Derek began his teaching career in the Carolinas at the middle/high school level. Under his direction, Derek’s middle school choir won the South Carolina State choral competition for three consecutive years. His high school choir earned the state championship six years in a row. Derek teaches summer art programs for the musically gifted (the “ST-ARTS” and “SMAART” programs). He also serves as a choral clinician for all-county choirs in South Carolina. Derek is the former director of the Carolina Chordsmen (Rock Hill, SC Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society), as well as singing lead for quartets Hemisphere and Keynote (2013 NSC District Silver Medalists). He relocated to Mt. Pleasant, SC where he recently married his wife, Nikki. Derek teaches music at Pepperhill Elementary in North Charleston. Robert Rund, Director Robert Rund grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri, playing ragtime piano and singing in barbershop quartets since the age of seven. He began composing and arranging music in his teens. Today, he has an eclectic taste of music and art that spans many styles and genres, but continues to be drawn to vocal and a capella music, particularly in the barbershop style. In the barbershop world, Rund has written over 30 arrangements, many of which have been performed and recorded by international champion quartets and medalist choruses. Many of these arrangements were spawned by his own quartet singing in the early 1990s with Doubletake, who became Barbershop Harmony Society’s 1993 Mid-Atlantic District Champion in their first district competition and represented this district twice at the International Competition. Since that time, internationally recognized quartets and choruses have performed and recorded Rund’s arrangements. The list includes international champion quartets Keepsake (1992), Platinum (2002), and Gotcha! (2004), and Storm Front (2010), and medalist choruses Sound of the Rockies (Denver, CO) and West Towns Chorus (Lombard, IL). In addition, Rund has composed vocal music outside the barbershop style including SATB choral works written for and dedicated to the New Jersey Association of Independent School’s All-State Chorus and premiered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Robert Rund leads independent consulting firm, R2C2. He recently served as the President and Head of School of the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey. Mr. Rund earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Goucher College. 55 Chapter Board – 2013 VP Program – Shawn Whisenant President – Mikey Mancuso Members at Large – Bill Conway, Secretary – Brian McGee Michael Weiss Treasurer – Richard Harris VP Marketing/PR – Phil Wilcox Musical Leadership VP Membership/Development – Brantley Cox Directors – Derek Street, Robert Rund VP Music/Performance – Tom Nawrocki PVP performing on the International stage in Toronto (above) and at Art Fest (left). 56 New Bern The Southern Gentlemen New Bern, NC Chartered 1/2/92 www.newbernbarbershop.com Number: Q022 Members (12/31/13) – 34 Rehearsals: Tuesday, 7:00 PM at Cornerstone Church, 2304 US 70 Hwy East (James City), New Bern, NC 28560 © Three Oaks Photography Fall 2013 Contest – Bette Oglesby & Russ Erwin, Directors Row 1: Don Knight, BJ Oglesby (Director), Ron Hykes, Jim Wilson. ~ The 79th Annual Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention ~ 2017 DAILY BULLETIN DESERTDESERT NEWSNEWS Friday July 14th 8 POST CONVENTION 2017 8 Last Minute Articles & Photos From the 2017 BHS Convention in Las Vegas, NV July 3 - 9 Society Honors Grand Central Red Caps Takes Two Steps to Correct Wrong (submitted by Ford Fuller) Grand Central Red Caps Quartet Honored at Saturday Night Spectacular The theme of this year’s Saturday Night Spectacular was “Together, We Sing” featuring the Ambassadors of Harmony & The Vocal Majority mega-chorus, along with quartets Vocal Spectrum and Crossroads. It was an awesome show! This evening’s program is about how our music brings us together. While we cannot erase the errors of the past, we do want to affirm, here and now, that our music is for all, regardless of race, creed or color. We celebrate the spread of our special kind of harmony to more di- verse groups of people, here in America, and throughout the worldwide community, bringing together young and old, rich and poor, black and white. But, perhaps the most poignant moment was a long-overdue correction of a horrible decision made by our Society in 1941. The story be- gins in 1940 when the National SPEBSQSA Convention was held in New York City at which time our society learned of a city-wide Bar- bershop Quartet Competition sponsored by the NYC Parks Department, that actually began in 1935. SPEBSQSA officers decided to invite the winner to the following year’s convention to be held in St. Louis. When the 1941 winner was determined, a telegram was sent to SPEBSQSA letting them know the winner.

Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatres and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. Whether it’s at a high school in Kansas, by an all-female troupe in Japan or the first production of West Side Story ever staged in Estonia, productions of MTI musicals involve over 10 million people each year. Although we value all our clients, the twelve thousand high schools who perform our shows are of particular importance, for it is at these schools that music and drama educators work to keep theatre alive in their community.

From Director Tom: Men and Friends of the BCC, Thank you for your nice work on our performance at Lockwood. Thanks to 36+ of you for taking the time to come and sing. It does my heart good. I thought we sang well for a very appreciative audience. It was good to have several quartets. Can we have even more than five quartets and maybe some new faces? Thank you also for the nice time at our favorite watering hole. It was nice to be able to eat with you and not have to worry about teaching the next a.m. Let's keep up the good work! From Prez Jack: Our August 21 performance at Bowers’ School Farm was a result of the “Bob Wallace Four” serenading two ladies during the ride in the parking bus from Log Cabin Days. It amazes me how and where the invitations come to sing at the various events that we do. The power of music is amazing. I continue to be impressed by the relaxed manner that the Big Chief Chorus presents itself. You are quite a likeable bunch. Remember that you are a disciplined chorus with all eyes on the director, but being humble enough to mingle with your audience following the performance. Vol. 11, No. 4 (#124) August 1, 2011 AROUND THE PATCH The Big Chief Chorus forewent its practice on Tuesday night, July 12, for an enjoyable performance for forty residents and staff at Lockwood of Summertime is for loafing, right? • Barbershop Harmony Lesson Plan a Unique Genre of Music Originating in the United States
SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL Barbershop Harmony Lesson Plan A Unique Genre of Music Originating in the United States Grade Level: 6 - 12 Suggested Time Allowance: 1 hour Objectives: 1. Listen to and analyze short samples of music in the barbershop genre. 2. Consider the voice parts and ensembles types (quartet vs. chorus) within the genre. 3. Discuss the origin of barbershop music. 4. Experiment with “tag singing” a traditional way of sharing barbershop music. Materials Required: Computer with Internet access, projector, speakers (or SMART Board) Introduce Topic: Have you ever heard of barbershop harmony? Have you ever seen a quartet or a chorus of all men or all women that sing popular songs a cappella, in four-part harmony? Do you think of it as something your grandparents or great grandparents would enjoy? Does the thought of barbershop harmony evoke thoughts of straw hats, striped vests and canes? If so, you’re thinking of the early days of barbershop. Like all music styles, barbershop harmony has expanded, adapted and evolved over time. As each generation exerts influence and takes new risks with a music style, the style continues to grow and change. What fun would it be if no one took any risks? We would never have any variety. What if Elvis hadn’t pushed the envelope? Would we have any of the current pop/rap/rock/heavy metal styles that we have today? Everything that we know today came from somewhere or someone long ago. Barbershop harmony is no different and today it is a unique, American art form. LoveNotes Quartet 2014 International Quartet Champion and 2007 Rising Star Quartet Champion First quartet to win both the youth quartet contest (in 2007) and the standard quartet contest (in 2014) SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL Barbershop Harmony Lesson Plan See and Hear Quartet Examples: Let’s get your ears attuned to what barbershop harmony sounds like in its current form.
